movies/tv Generation 5?

Never seen LPS but it looks fun, I was thinking more of a reboot of the franchise entirely. Maybe CGI more realistic styled ponies in a live-action environment, maybe a movie remake of Rescue at Midnight Castle but with Megan potrayed by an on screen actor and ponies like Firefly making a come back. Obviously with a redone script and all that stuff.

Idk I just think that would be so awesome

Most things "Cartoon" today are CGI, I like MLP sticking to a more traditional style of cartoon story telling. If it were to go full blown CGI I'd probably be turned off by the series since I don't really like the look of Ponies in CGI. Why does MLP have to update too, it's just a fun and brilliant cute show with great content. The only way I can see CGI working for MLP is to improve on the currently existing concept. And at the very most only adding small benefits here and there to things such like maybe smoother frames or better effects.

This generation should be around for a long, the most logical spin off for a generation 5 would be going down the Equestria Girls route and make the characters Humanized or Anthro.

Given the franchise's history (G1 was successful in the US and got two cartoon series with radically different scenarios, G2 wasn't successful in the US and got none, G3 was sorta successful and got two and a bit sorta attempts at animations with radically different artstyles.) G4 will likely get another series or maybe two with some kind of variant storylines or modified artstyle. Once sales of the toylines drop (according to Hasbro, MLP is currently the main line for their 'Girls' division [Yes, they still divide up their business into 'Boy' and 'Girl' lines. You think that would be changed in this day and age, but nope.]) so they'd have to *really* tank to justify a complete line change into G5.

In order to be 'G5' officially, it would have to be significantly different in design and the like. They might move back to a more horse-like design like G2, or to an even abstracted design like the bobble-headed G3.5. More likely they'll try to simplify the design though, as one of the primary complaints is how the G4 toys don't match the G4 animation as well as the fans would like. So having G5 be designs easier to mold 3D toys from might be high on Hasbro's 'want list'.

I'm happy where they are now. If this show continued for another few seasons, hell, even became the next simpsons/family guy (NOT AT ALL like the shows themselves, just in regard to series runtime on the air) I couldn't be happier! :yay:

  • 9 months later...

Will they make one? Yes. It's one of Hasbro's biggest moneymakers.

Will it be good? We'll wait and see.

Will they erase the lore for new stuff? Yes. Hasbro does this all the time with their shows.

They haven't finished milking this generation yet...

Lol this is true and your avatar cracks me up btw.

I agree that g4 is good but it doesn't have much left for it now. the problem is, the quality of the show doesn't take priority; the shininess of the castles and the profitability of the acrylic toys are on heir mind at most. g1, g2, and g3 all sold well and (...well) not many bronies liked them. the point is, Hasbro are willing to sacrifice it's loyal fanbase and show's quality for merchandise sales.

Does EQG count?

And if not... looks like Guardians of Harmony could be G4's equivalent of G1's My Little Pony Tales. :D

I think if they would make a new gen, they would keep it as close to fim as possible. Maybe just go to another corner of equestria and follow unknown ponies.. Since fim has been such a success, and want to mqke the most of it, but they cant keep it interesting. Well at least this is what i secretly hope they will do. You dont have to actually see any of our known ponies, just the mention is enough to know it is in the same universe.

Possibly? I hadn't thought of it quite that way... mainly because I know EqG was an attempt to break into the regular doll market, which didn't work quite the way they had intended. Since it wasn't really intended to continue the MLP franchise as such... I don't know if it counts. :)

True. Especially if they do a bunch of animated specials based on the toys. Which they might still do. Hasbro does get a bit wild when it comes to the x.5 generations, trying seemingly random things.

Would there actually be a gen 5? The current generation is thriving and more successful then ever. Why would they stop and create a new generation and run the risk of disappointing fans?

Im sure, at some point there will be a new generation and yes, i would love to watch it.

But i hope its gonna be completely different from Fim, I like change.

Make it even Cgi and challenge Filly Funtasia with it.

Well, we can all just wait.

I am tempted to make a comparison to Star Trek. When the original series got the axe, it was a couple of decades before TNG. By then, TOS had developed such an enormous cult following that the idea of a spin off was naturally met with skepticism. By the time TNG wrapped some nine or so years later, it had become legendary in its own right. Nothing that followed after that could ever reach the high bar the series set (certainly not Voyager or Enterprise), but it proved that a proper spin off/continuation of something with devoted and finicky fans can be done and can be successful if the right people are involved.

I don't think there will be a G5.

What I mean by this is that MLP won't and doesn't need another "reboot" but rather an extension or elaboration on the current generation from here on out. G4 is My Little Pony. A Guardians of Harmony series is still G4.

Yeah tell that to Beast Wars, Animated, Armada, Team Prime and new RiD. No show can last forever without rebooting.

In fact tell it to My Little Pony and Friends, My Little Pony Tales, G3, 3.5, Newborn Cuties and Friendship is Magic too.

I mean in the sense of Transformers, where the universe and main characters are still kept, rather than scrapping the whole thing entirely. Hasbro will not do that. They are having too much success with the current universe they have.

Optimus Prime turning into a mecha gorilla, Bumblebee's movie form translating into the cartoons and unable to talk, My Little Pony going from fantasy adventure to slice of life to a mixture of both, jem and the holograms going from confident adults who run a foster house and a business, to whiny YouTube teen sensations. Hasbro has done it before, they'll do it again.

They have scrapped and temporarily removed main/popular characters before. Wind Whistler, Gusty, Shady, Truly, The Tales crew , Minty, Kimono, I don't see Sunstreaker or Starscream hanging around in this universe, neither do I see Soundwave and his cassettes. Thundercracker and Skywarp aren't here, nor is Arcee.

In all fairness to what you say however, Transformers (and its fans) are Hasbro's favored child. The one they experiment the most with and the one they'll keep milking till the sun explodes or mankind goes extinct. But it has had many reboots.

There's a possibility the next generation of My Little Pony will begin towards the end of this decade, or in the early 2020s. By then, I probably won't be a fan/Brony anymore.
