A Theory About Equestria's Lunar Cycle

(Firstly I'd like to say that I apologize if this is in the wrong section. Still fairly new to this forum :) )

It seems like the topic of how long a moon is in Equestria has been up for debate for some time now. Some propose it's a year, others say a month, but in the end no one knows for sure. However, I'd like to throw my hat into the ring and try to see if I could figure out how long it is, and I think I may have.

So in the first Equestria Girls film, Luna says that the portal will close in 3 days, and won't open again for 30 moons. Then in Apple Family Reunion, Granny Smith says that they have a new family reunion every 100 moons. Of course this just doesn't add up, as there has been too much growth in the apple family for it to occur once every year, and Twilight being stuck in the human world for only a couple months wouldn't really be hugely catastrophic. So that pushes this off the table.

However, I think there is a way this all can add up, and that's if there was a complete lunar cycle every 1.7 weeks. This would allow 30 moons to be the equivalent to 1.5 years, and thus allow there to be a large Apple family reunion every 5 years, or 100 moons. The former would make sense because that is a lot of time to be trapped between realms and have it be potentially dangerous for Equestria, while the latter would make sense because it allows time for significant family growth (and physical growth in characters like Apple Bloom) as well as allowing there to be smaller reunions in between then.

Although this all is purely speculation, so if you disagree or have a theory of your own let me know!

A BIG problem is that the show's writers are damn near as careless w the details as Dr. Watson was.  :( If you think about it, Luna could run a full moon cycle every night & get Twilight out in 30 days.  Or, if that wouldn't work then alternate full moon, new moon, full moon & get her out in 60 days

Also, in one of the episodes (ICR which one) Apple Jack refers to the gathering in episode 1 as an Apple Family reunion.  But, in Apple Family Reunion, Granny Smith tells Apple Bloom that it is always at Sweet Apple Acres every 100 moons & "this is your 1st".  You would think AB was old enough in the pilot, she would remember being at a reunion.

IMO, what happened is Apple Jack was mistaken.  Yes, there were a LOT of Apples in the pilot, but it was NOT an official reunion.  Apple Bloom was at the last reunion (8+ years ago) but was so little she has forgotten this.  Granny was having a "senior moment" & forgot Apple Bloom's exact age (I'm not anywhere near as old as her & I do it all the time w my relatives).  The others were just too polite to contradict.

The alternatives are 1)AB is under 8 years old (seems a little young to be the last in class to get a Cutie Mark) or 2) AB (& presumably her parents) were away during the last reunion.

In short, time sequencing is a BIG problem on this show & the length of the moon cycle is part of this

Although messing with the moon would be a big problem, since it could cause major confusion in Equestria, so it'd be a double edged sword, really.

I like to think of the main family reunion being just that, a main one that houses relatives from all over, while the smaller one is more of a yearly thing that has the same name, but it has different meanings. I could see them just having the same name for both of them but still addressing them based on how large they are.

I'd say Apple Bloom is somewhere between 8 - 10, so it would make a lot of sense that she just wouldn't remember the previous one, and so they're considering this one her 'first' one, AKA the first one she remembers. But the 'senior moment' thing also seems like it could make sense, since well Granny can be a pretty silly character.

From what I heard, AJ and AB's parents are deceased, and they could be avoiding any mention of them because well it's a kids show, and it's probably very devastating for them.

Although it is a problem, at least there's headcanons and theories to help patch up any holes :P
