What was that thing in "Party Pooped"?

I've been wondering about this for a long time and now I'm finally going to make a thread to get an answer since I can't find one on other sites.

 

Just what was that creature Pinkie encountered near Yakyakestan in "Party Pooped"?

Was that something from myths & folklore, or something they came up with special?

I think I heard it was made up, which is a real shame if I'm right - Considering how well MLP's drawn on rl mythology before (even the one-eyed thing that stole the griffons' idol was taken from mythology - and those guys even stole griffon gold in mythology too!)

Looked a bit like a Dire Wolf from the 1st edition AD&D Monster Manuel

Could be an Dire(winter)wolf like sweetolebob18 said, but maybe it's an Amarok. Amarok is an Inuit mythology about a big grey wolf. It eats people who hunt alone at night. But the picture looks more like a dog/ape hybrid thou  :okiedokielokie:
