Discord is the humorous and comedian villain, whom really doesn't care about anything but causing chaos and having, what he perceives, as 'fun'. He's able to do this and remain relaxed because he is literally, for all in-show intents and purposes on par with a god. He is an incredibly powerful spirit, the representation of all chaos in the world, perhaps the entire universe. The only known way to stop him is by using the full-potential of the elements of harmony, which can only be used by the Mane 6 at this point. In short, he's a complete and utter bad-ass, because he is arguably one of the most, if not the most powerful single entity in the MLP: FIM world. But at the same time, he is hilarious, fun to watch, witty, clever, and makes things both fun and interesting. He toys around with people because he can, and can get away with it.

 

I love villains like him and his Star Trek equivalent Q, because it isn't a matter of pitting your powers against each other and beating them through sheer force. You can't. They're more powerful than you are, and that's all there is to it. Thusly, you need to outwit them, exploit their weaknesses, and hit them with the only item or thing they're weak against, whether that be a physical magical item like MLP, or simply outwitting them at their own game, like with Q in Star Trek.

 

Then there's Chrysalis, whom is really a far different type of villain. She is no god with amazing powers, and does not fall under the same category as Discord. While Discord is basically omnipotent, and needs to be outwitted alone and cannot truly be 'defeated', Chrysalis is just as mortal as any of the main characters of the show. She's on the same level of existence, even if she does use trickery, deceit, etc to fool others and avoid direct confrontation. Discord is outright witty and funny, and doesn't even attempt to hide his actions, but instead exploits them because he's all-powerful and is truly confident that no one can stop him. Meanwhile, Chrysalis needs to be sneaky, cunning, clever and use every trick in the bad guy book to be the super villain she is, because while she does have powers, she's not on the same playing field as Discord. Chrysalis, being a Changeling, also has limited power that is genuinely her own. Being a parasite, she feeds off positive emotions of others in order to gain strength, and can only become incredibly strong after sucking off all the energy from others.

 

In short:

-Discord is an 'Omni-Potent Deity' Villain. You cannot directly face him and beat him, because he's an entire level of existence higher than you. You need to directly exploit his weaknesses in order to trap him using ancient magic in order to stop him, because you cannot simply 'beat him out' like you can with normal villains.

-Chrysalis has many classic villain traits to her, all brought together in a unique way. She uses trickery, deceit, disguise, etc in order to accomplish her goals. On top of that, she is parasitic in nature and requires the power of others to become genuinely powerful.

 

So my main point being, Discord would whip Chrysalis' flank if they ever fought, as he can play around with her, and have absolutely nothing to fear as she has no possible way of using the Elements of Harmony.

 

I respect Chrysalis as a villain, but Discord is far more appealing as a villain to me. I do physically hate Chrysalis more as a villain, as she has the true loathsome aspects that a good villain does, but she's simply not funny, witty and as interesting as Discord.

I thought that Discord was kind of a push over. He didn't take the Elements seriously and didn't trust in Friendship being Magic, so he didn't really put up much of a threat. I think he could have been a lot more bad ass and stopped the Mane 6 on a more dire scale, separating them physically so that all them have to go and search for each other while his chaotic reign continued.

Discord is by far my most favorite "villain". I don't see him as a villain at all, but rather an all powerful friend who is fun, and often times very humorous. Not only that but chaos is also unrestrained change, and change is something that we can all appreciate. Especially when you consider in what ways our society needs to change. All things considered Discord is actually a pretty cool. Cotton candy clouds, chocolate rain, exploding chocolate milk, and not to mention the possible creation of Screwball. A world that he rules would be one that endlessly fun, and endlessly new and exciting. Sure it is very possible that a number of ponies would not like the ever-changing nature of chaos, but I think that is all in the mind of the individual. What is chaos and unrest to one is dynamic and enjoyable to another. For this reason I believe that Discord is commonly misunderstood. At least in terms of how one can perceive his actions.

 

It is often times a good idea to look at something through the lens of contrasting ideas. Rather than a single outlook. In this way you can see a broader perspective of the given subject. To look at character and try to see them for who they are from different perspectives is understanding. What I value in this understanding is not only in how one understands their friends, but also in how they understand the "villains" of their world.

Discord was a more interesting character and being, but I think that Chrysalis was a better villain. She actually had a good plan and seemed to succeed in evoking the feeling of old Disney villains where NMM failed.

 

I'd definitely like to see a Discord and Chrysalis team up, that would be epic.

Discord did well in feeding my love for comical, mischievous villains, but I'd still have to say I prefer Chrysalis. Her role as a villain is simply much more dark than Discord, what with the imposing army of Changelings, and ability to defeat Celestia herself, and feeding off of love, and even just the appearance of her and the changelings looked very menacing and evil. She's just the kind of character you get the "totally terrible awful evil of impending doom" vibe from. Not to mention how brilliant she much have been to keep up her facade for so long.
