Who cares about Thanksgiving?

I don't celebrate the holidays, but I just find it funny that here in America, Thanksgiving is basically nonexistent. Soon after Halloween, the Christmas decorations go up. And instead of people being grateful and counting their blessings for Thanksgiving, they're premared to abandon teif families and kill each other for material things in Black Friday sales, which is the holiday that seems to have replaced Thanksgiving

It's hardly surprising to me (the bible fortold people would be like this, ages ago) but what do you guys think about the "who cares about Thanksgiving? " mentality a a lot ov people seem to b av?

(Should we even be counting our blessings once a year, when the holidays call for it?)

Eh. My family doesn't do Holloween or Christmas--Thanksgiving is our major holiday, and the only one we celebrate this time of year other than New Years.  :) So, I can't really speak too much due to my bais.

Honestly, the entire holiday period from after Halloween to New Years Day has always been an issue with me. The one day that I actually did enjoy was Thanksgiving, since the focus was on food and family, not some material gifts you'd discard in a month (it also gave me an excuse to do a bunch of period stuff throughout the day, like making colonial foods for lunch :P ). I fully understand any frustration people have with Black Friday and Christmas, since my family seems to ignore all else.

I really don't care for the holiday or the food to be honest. I was always of the belief we should be thankfully everyday (not that those who cerebrate the holiday aren't). It always seemed like a hollow holiday to market more crap, and football, bleh.

Halloween I like, Christmas and New Year's I like, as is much the same for most holidays. Just not thanksgiving.

@@Nightmare Muffin,

Hey jokes on you, my family has Thanksgiving traditions seperate from Chrismas ones. We go up to the mountains, Dad fries a turkey, my brothers and I go skiing, we all eat together.

And from what it seems already more people care about Thanksgiving in this thread than not.

America isn't the center of the world, and it's alien voodoo rituals are not practiced here.

(Just joking, i know thanksgiving certainly isn't voodoo. Voodoo would be kind of cool actually, however neither the holiday nor the African form of sorcery is popular here. )

My family cares greatly about thanksgiving and so do I. Americans need to stop being ungrateful, thinking that they could have more than they need. I always say think about the children in Africa who have nothing, but still manage to have smiles on their faces. Yet, with everything we have, we put up our faces like if someone owes us more. Yes, I care about thanksgiving greatly because I can take the time to thank God for all the blessings he has provided me.

Voodoo comes the West Indies, not Africa.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of all.  It's about food, family, and football.  What's not to love?  Although getting presents on Christmas is great, I think Thanksgiving is much more personal and less stressful (except for the ones doing the cooking and cleaning).

But I refuse to do any shopping on Thanksgiving, for a couple of reasons.  First, I don't want to be caught up in that madness.  The commercialization of Christmas has gotten way out of hand, and people now trample each other to death on the appropriately named Black Friday.  Second, it's terrible that people have to work on Thanksgiving to provide for all of those shoppers.  By shopping on Thanksgiving, I would be promoting the practice of forcing those people to work during that holiday.

As for the part about America; how people in America treat their national holidays really isn't something non-Americans can comment on, which was what i was trying to point out.

As for voodoo - Guess i learned something new today, thanks.

Thanksgiving barely exists in Germany and i don't necessarily see the point of it. Why should we have one holiday to be thankful? Shouldn't we be thankful everyday?

Besides, for me it's just a holiday that people need to pass the time before christmas. No offence to the people who like tg.

Well then I would believe the applicability to chiefly American posters would be implicit but I suppose that's not the case.

No problem, world religions and mythology are something of my "special talent" if you catch my drift.

Why should we have one holiday to be thankful? Shouldn't we be thankful everyday?

We should but the same as we shouldn't wait for Christmas to try and be nice. A holiday is just a reminder of that ideal, not the only time it's practiced.

Thanksgiving is a big holiday for me. We always have a feast and sometimes watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade on TV. I don't see a reason to disregard it, but everyone has their own traditions I guess.

Thanksgiving is nice.  I always thought the reason why they skipped Thanksgiving and went straight to Christmas was because buying Christmas gifts always makes a lot of money for businesses.  Whereas Thanksgiving you're just buying some food which isn't very expensive.  Same with the reason why Easter decorations come up right after Valentines day, because people usually get people a little something for them on Easter

While I absolutely despise traditional Thanksgiving food (this year I'm making escargot, baked brie, chocolate mousse...) I do love the message behind Thanksgiving. I think it's great to have a day set aside to remind you to be thankful for all you have, and of course it's nice to be with family as well. :)

For me thanksgiving ( in the American context) is the pinnacle of our country, we drink large quantities of alcohol and then beat each other up over electronic sales at 3 a.m . No no no,  really though, i do enjoy the holiday, nothing beats hangin' with family and enjoying a good turkey, such a warm feeling smelling the food throughout the house all day.

Thanksgiving is one of my very favorite holidays. Why? Because I get to see my family and cousins. Halloween is OK, and Christmas is great. But, seeing as I'm half Jewish, am an only child, and my relatives are fully Jewish, Christmas isn't as big to me, as many other's Christmas's probably are. Christmas, to me right now, is just a day in which I can hopefully get Double Pay working at my movie theater job. Thanksgiving, however is something extremely important to me. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Christmas, it can just get rather lonely sometimes.

Well, i can't really care for it, as it's an american holiday. Here in australia, we don't celebrate thanksgiving i believe. If we do, no one i've ever met has ever done it before. so i dont really care for it, make sense?

Thanksgiving is nice.

It's a good opportunity to spend time with family and eat good food.

While it isn't my favorite holiday, it is kind of annoying how immediately after Halloween people start getting ready for Christmas and ignore Thanksgiving.

I don't care for it, its nice what the day is about even though it didn't start of so humbly as they make it out to be. My thanks givings are boring and honestly I rather not do it.

Thanksgiving isn't that great IMO. The food isn't even that good. I'm not insulting my family's cooking I just don't really like that type of food. And I have to spend extended time with my relatives. I like my relatives, but it is a bit stressful.  And being thankful doesn't really come naturally to me. I was practically born a pessimist.

Plus, the Pilgrims were total weirdos.
