My favorite episodes of the season were:

Cutie Map- an amazing opener, quite different from the other premieres too

Make New Friends but Keep Discord- by far rhe best Discord episode

The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone- an awesome adventure map episode for Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash

Slice of Life- absolutely the farthest I've seen a show go to make something cool for their longtime fans, definitely not your average 'little girls show' anymore!

Amending Fences- as someone who has grown apart from many friends over the years, this episode really got to me :(

Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep- finally a great Luna episode, took 'em long enough :comeatus:

Rarity Investigates- with all the noir aesthetic and Rarity silliness, I ate this one right up alright lol :please:

Made in Manehatten- the Rarity/Applejack team up episode we needed, plus moar Coco

Brotherhooves Social- Big Mac proves he is the best big bro to AB, warms my heart just thinkin' about it

Crusaders of the Lost Mark- the CMC finally do that thing... you know the thing ;)

The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows- probably one of the most hilarious episodes, new babby coming soon! :derp:

Hearthbreakers- Pinkie's family finally gets fleshed out, about time I say

Scaremaster- another Nightmare Night episode, and the better one if you ask me :umad:

The Hooffields and McColts- my favorite map episode, Twilight & Fluttershy play off each other really well and I thought the reference to that historical feud was well done

The Mane Attraction- an amazing episode with an amazing guest star with an amazing singing voice. Hoovesies!

The Cutie Re-mark- a daring season finale. Time travel is always fun and I guess Starlight getting redeemed is alright too.

...so about 18 great episodes in season 5 imo. Eeyup. :D

I'd toss Brotherhooves Social and Scare master into the running.

Brotherhooves Social answered a few questions and gave Big Mac some much deserved character development. Add the costume and voice that had me cringeing the whole time (in a good way) and you have an episode that balanced feels, character, and humour.

As a big Fluttershy fan, I enjoyed having an episode with her, and I was impressed with the scares. Fluttershy's reverse development was a problem to me given her increased bravery over the seasons, but it was worth it to see Flutterbat again.

those were two of my favourite episodes too, but I also really liked mane attraction.

Great idea for a thread @@C.B, and great choice of favourites! ;)

These are in no particular order, the margins between the first 3 are microscopic!

Amending Fences - Moondancer! <3 This episode was perfectly handled IMO and provided some nice resolution to an often overlooked moment.

The Mane Attraction - My best pony gets some extra backstory and reminds her childhood friend of her true self, how can I not love this one?! :D The camp flashback was adorable, as was that oh so delightful reprise of 'Equestria, The Land I Love', major feels!

Crusaders of the Lost Mark - The CMC + Magical Mystery Cure = unbridled joy! Not to mention, Diamond Tiara turned it around big time. :)

Hearthbreakers - Considering that 'Pinkie Apple Pie' was my favourite episode for a long time, this one is a no-brainer. Marble Pie was a nice addition, but I loved how the Pies and Apples came to bond despite their apparent differences.

Same for me, I felt this season was the best for the fact of all the amazing plot points introduced this season. Can't wait to see how the CMC will be handled next season!

  • 2 weeks later...
I made a list of my 5 favorite episodes of Season 4 last year, so I figured I'd do so for Season 5 as well. My episode posts mostly end up discussing questions, issues, inconsistencies, etc., so it's probably good for me to (at least occasionally) take stock of episodes and aspects of episodes that I liked. One thing I'll mention is that, besides the episodes below, there were several other episodes this season (e.g., Amending Fences, The Cutie Re-Mark, etc.) which were thought-provoking and provided a lot of material to analyze, and I enjoyed discussing and thinking about those episodes, even though I ultimately ended up not really liking them.

So here are what I think are my top 5 overall favorite episodes of the season, in no particular order.

The Cutie Map (Episodes 1 & 2): The storyline of these episodes is engaging, and the lessons of these episodes - about the dangers and horrors of forcing equality and erasing individuality - are good, complex and thought-provoking. These episodes are very good at making Starlight's town feel creepy, discomforting, and menacing, including the forced pleasantness and sameness of the town's residents, the feelings of being watched, having to keep talk of and admiration of cutie marks secret, the propaganda (including the town's song), and not being quite sure what the consequences will be for ponies who break with the town's philosophy. And Starlight in these episodes is an intriguing and sinister villain, with her magical talent to take cutie marks away and force equality, her ability to propagandize almost all the residents of her village and keep them in line, and her rejection of Twilight's lecturing and getting away at the end without being reformed.

Crusaders Of The Lost Mark (Episode 18): Obviously this is a feel-good episode. After seeing Diamond Tiara hit rock bottom and open up a little to the CMC in between acting like her usual self, it's heartwarming to see her finally choosing the path of good, standing up to her mother and finding real happiness in complimenting her classmates and helping them get a new playground. And of course, it's gratifying to see the CMC's selflessness toward Diamond Tiara in this episode, and to see them get their cutie marks in such a selfless talent of helping others realize their purpose. The final sequence of the episode is especially emotionally powerful, when we see through flashbacks how far the CMC have come, and we see the Apple family, Rainbow Dash, and Rarity being proud of the CMC.

Rarity Investigates! (Episode 15): It's a little surprising that this episode is here, since I don't ordinarily care much for Rarity episodes. I like the atmosphere of the episode which is set by the music, greyscale color scheme, lighting, and narration. This episode also does a very good job of showing Rarity's and Rainbow Dash's friendship, despite what would seem like pretty big differences between them. The biggest example of this is that Rarity is so willing and dedicated to helping exonerate Rainbow Dash, even as Rainbow complains and doesn't see the point of what Rarity is doing. But there are several little examples of this, too, like Rainbow inviting Rarity to the dinner, Rarity offering to accompany Rainbow to practice, Rainbow's apology to Rarity at the end of the episode, and Rarity's pointing out that Rainbow is in fact a good friend by flying out and finding Spitfire for the show. Finally, it's nice to see Rainbow Dash get to fly in a Wonderbolts performance, bringing her ever closer to achieving her dream of being a Wonderbolt.

The Mane Attraction (Episode 24): I think this episode successfully gets the audience to like and root for Coloratura. It's nice to see her being down-to-earth and relatable, despite her fame and initial surface appearance as a demanding diva, and we hope to see her succeed even with Svengallop gone. I liked seeing Twilight use her recording spell to help Applejack with her plan to expose Svengallop, and to see the rest of the Mane Six on Applejack's (and, ultimately, Coloratura's) side as the plan is carried out. Finally, Coloratura's songs in this episode are quite good.

Do Princesses Dream Of Magic Sheep? (Episode 13): I was hesitant to put this episode here, in part because Luna really does irresponsibly put Equestria in danger by creating and failing to control the Tantabus, but we don't see her punished or stripped of her power or anything. And yet I somehow find myself being forgiving of her and liking the episode. Part of the reason for that might be just that I like seeing Luna's character being developed. But also, while logically, Luna shouldn't really beat herself up for the relatively little harm she caused as Nightmare Moon, I can at least somewhat understand and relate to why she did so. She was sent to the moon for a thousand years by her own sister, in Luna Eclipsed nearly everyone in Ponyville reacts to her with horror, and I get the impression that not many ponies care much about Luna, even after her transformation back from Nightmare Moon. And I think that one big reason for my liking this episode is that we see that the Mane Six really care about Luna, even as perhaps not many others do. The scene where the Mane Six convince Luna that she has been forgiven for her actions as Nightmare Moon, that she's different now, and that they trust her, is emotionally impactful. And the episode has a good lesson that when you do something wrong, torturing yourself over it doesn't help anyone.

In no particular order:

The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone

Appleoosa's Most Wanted

Slice of Life

Amending Fences

Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?
Rarity Investigates

The Mane Attraction

Hearthbreakers

I liked Party Pooped, Tanks for the Memories, and others, but they're more runners-up than favorites.

I have yet to see What About Discord? and Scare Master.

My favorite season 5episodes:

  1. The Cutie Map, by far the best premiere and the second best episode for me (After MMC), though the most solid. Starlight Glimmer is the perfect villain here since she provides an interesting dilemma and is not a magical being from 1000 years ago who can only be defeated through the power of freakin' rainbow lasers.
  2. Crusaders Of The Lost Mark, it's like Magical Mistery Cure, and I love it. It also had great character development for DT and the CMC and ended up with a very good conclusion.
  3. Amending Fences, because of the clever use of random stablishments from the first episode plus a very good conflict and awesome characterization of Twilight. Besides, I loved Twilight's old school mates.
  4. The Cutie Re-Mark, Starlight keeps being an awesome villain, her backstory is cool and so is her reformation (though a little rushed). The rest of the episode is pure epicness.
  5. Slice Of Life, because even fanservice needs to be done right. Who cares about the plot making sense? It's an special ocassion! Leave the deep analysis to the next episodes.
  6. Bloom And Gloom, because of all the creativity and craziness of the things that happened, plus the lesson, plus more Luna helping the CMC in their dreams.
  7. Make New Friends But Keep Discord, because Discord and Fluttershy were amazing here, also I loved Tree Hugger and everything was hilarious.
  8. Brotherhooves Social, the whole episode was funny and interesting, but that ending turned something good into something amazing.
  9. Rarity Investigates, because it was really hilarious, creative, and Rarity is best pony. I've also been wanting a RarityDash episode for a long time.
  10. Canterlot Boutique, nice episode with nice conflict, and also new song from best pony.
  11. Made In Manehattan, because the conflict was really good and the lesson feels realistic yet optimistic.
  12. Party Pooped and The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows, both because they're full of Pinkie's randomness and humor. Simply hilarious without them having so much depth, which I enjoy from time to time.
  13. The Lost Tresure Of Griffinstone, I loved seeing Gilda back and the conflict was cool. I feel like this should be higher but for whatever reason i just don't like it as much as I'd like.
  14. The Mane Attraction, cool episode, Rara is a great character and the songs are simply amazing, specially The Magic Inside. However, it was a little rushed and forced to me.
  15. Do Princesses Dream Of The Magic Sheep?, it's cool the writers are feeling comfortable with humor and randomness, but in this episode they were way too comfortable with that. The conflict was still cool and so was the resolution, but i feel it could have been done better. I have mixed feelings, but overall it was still really good.

I had to do a top 15 (though it actually features 16 episodes) because all those episodes deserved to be mentioned imo. The rest were either average or terrible (Mostly average, there's only 1 episode that I consider terrible).

Probably #1 is Hearthbreakers for me. FiM finally got an actual Christmas episode! Nothing against the one before, it had plenty of value for what it was. Of course, it wouldn't even begin to be number one from that alone. I really liked it because of the characters! Great to see Maud Pie again, and see Pinkie Pie's family in the modern day, while also learning a bit more about them and their traditions.

The other top ones from me would be Canterlot Boutique and Rarity Investigates. Amending Fences was pretty good, too. Party Pooped is also one of my favorites. It had some issues, but it was a lot of fun, and even made fun of its own pacing and the people that take the show far too seriously.

The two opening episodes were also pretty good.

  • 1 year later...

I thought season 5 was great. While it didn't quite match the highlight of season 4 (namely "Twilight's Kingdom"), I would rank it third (behind seasons 1 and 4). The quality of the episodes was very consistent, and there were none I disliked.

It's not very easy to name favorite episodes due to the high quality in general, but I guess all the following deserve honorable mentions: "Bloom & Gloom", "Make New Friends but Keep Discord", "Slice of Life", "Party Pooped", "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?", "Rarity Investigates!" and "The One Where Pinkie Pie Knows". Quite a long list of episodes I really enjoyed but one episode was even better than all those...

My favorite episode of the season was "The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone". It was another episode showing MLP at its best. They took one of the most unpleasant characters in the whole series and made her redeem herself, in a believable way. That flashback with Gilda and Rainbow Dash was really touching. The character chemistry worked well, and there were also some funny moments from Pinkie.

I'm happy to say the series is still as awesome more than 100 episodes in as it was at the beginning. Season 6 awaits...

I could probably list the number of season 5 episodes I properly enjoyed on two hands. Still, I liked some of them, so here goes.

  1. "Rarity Investigates!" - I just find this delightful. Every joke lands, the Noir aesthetic is interesting, and I like how well Rarity and Rainbow Dash get along. Despite their differences, those two very much understand each other.
  2. "Bloom and Gloom" - I can understand if people find this one a little dry, but I'm always impressed by its focused creativity and how it gives Apple Bloom realistic anxieties. And then the ending is absolutely brilliant.
  3. "Party Pooped" - So fast-paced that it leaves no time to think, yet so packed with great gags that it hardly matters. Super fun and super funny, and I just like it when Twilight has to deal with the stresses of being a princess.
  4. "Crusaders of the Lost Mark" - Overstuffed and rushed, but it's hard to resist this episode's sheer emotional weight. Plus, it has one of the most significant changes to the show ever. Imagine if this was a little longer and had some time to breathe - then it would be truly magnificent.
  5. "Slice of Life" - I still think this is really clever with how it works fandom references into its plot. It's intentionally surreal, and yet nearly every gag is given a punchline separate from the reference. This doesn't get enough credit for how intelligently written it is.
