Jokuc 8,175 December 13, 2015 Share December 13, 2015 Hm.. I'll try to list some of the Christmas films I like. However, some of these aren't really about christmas, they just take place during christmas but I'll include them anyway cause they're so good. So.. To start off my list.. The Home Alone films These films are (to me) very entertaining. Although most things in them are rather silly, they're made in such a way that it makes me laugh rather than cringe. I don't really need to say much about these ones, you've probably seen them already. The Polar Express (2004) This movie might not be the best thing ever and some of the characters annoy me on a regular basis throughout the whole film, however I gotta say that it does a great job at delivering that Christmas feeling. Even though a part of me says "meh" about it, there's something that keeps me watching whenever it's on. My best guess is because of the amazing soundtracks. Really, the score fits in great and this particular one gives me shivers. Edward Scissorhands (1990) Again, great music here as well. The soundtrack is (to me) one of the most important things in a movie. With the score composed by Danny Elfman and movie directed by Tim Burton, things just can't go wrong. ......Even if TB uses the same damn actors in every film he makes. Anyway, Johnny Depp does a great performance in this film and I love his character. This movie isn't really about Christmas but hey, it's great anyway. Watch it if you haven't. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) Obligatory National Lampoon. And since I'm such a big horror fan, here's my 3 favorite Christmas horror films Black Christmas (1974) Classic horror film with a neat little mystery that makes it more interesting to watch. The Christmas atmosphere is great as well. Oh and the original cover for this film is fucking brilliant. There isn't a lot of gore or sex in this film either if I remember correctly so it shouldn't be too bad of a watch even if you're a bit young. Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984) This one is a little bit worse in terms of being family-friendly, but it is a great horror film (in my opinion (it only has 5.9 on imdb but I think it deserves a better rating)) and a must if you're into slasher flicks. Although Robert Wilson doesn't do too great of a job as the main character, this is THE film to see if you want to see an evil guy dressed up as Santa. Oh and you know how I said the poster for Black Christmas was brilliant? This one is even better. I mean just look at this. If you like this film, I also recommend Christmas Evil (aka You Better Watch Out) from 1980 as well as S01E02 from the Tales From the Crypt Series: "And All Through the House" (1989). They aren't as good, but they're something to check out as well if you don't mind watching B-films. Moving on... Gremlins (1984) Not that much of a Christmas film either to be honest but it's horror and it takes place during Christmas so hey, why not? This classic horror comedy is - along with The Howling - Joe Dante's best work. It's a film for the whole family and even if you haven't seen it, you have surely seen ....those. There's really no explanation needed, just watch it if you haven't! Going away from horror, here's four great Christmas films you might not have heard of: Fanny and Alexander (1982) Oh well look at that! I could finally throw in a Swedish film and feel proud about it. This film is not about Christmas but a part of the film takes place during this time. Basically it's about a rich family and their life and you get to follow them through happiness and sorrow. It could also be quite interesting to watch if you're interested in Swedish culture around Christmas I suppose. However, keep in mind that the film takes place during 1907-1909 so things aren't really like they are today. Still not convinced? Well it's directed by Ingmar Bergman ...and if that name doesn't tell you anything you've probably been living under a rock. It also won 4 Oscars. Tokyo Godfathers (2003) How sweet, I'll have some anime on the list! This film is a drama/comedy directed by Satoshi Kon and Shôgo Furuya (who also worked with Miyazaki on "Spirited Away", by the way) that follows three homeless people during Christmas as they're trying to take care of a baby they found among trash. The animation quality really stands out in this film, I love it. The characters are good as well and their funny conversations are to me the best thing about this movie. My only complaint about this movie is that I don't think they used enough music. A lot of shots were pretty silent with barely any music at all, in Christmas it's especially important to have a powerful soundtrack that gives you dem emotions for those sad/happy scenes. Either way, it's a good anime. Miracle on 34th Street (1947) Long story short, this one is about a man who says that he is Santa. It's one of those films that gives you that happy feeling. I'm not sure what else to say about it other than how much of a brilliant classic it is. ...And lastly It's a Wonderful Life (1946) The films above haven't been put in any specific order but I thought I'd put my favorite for last. This is (according to me) THE best Christmas film ever made... And it's barely even about Christmas. Jokuc, explain. I will! Without spoiling too much of the film, this one is about a businessman who goes through a tough time. Because of this, he decides to change his life in order to fix a bunch of problems but after a while, he realizes that his life was perfect just as it was. It's a Wonderful Life doesn't need to be all about christmas in order for you to get the christmas feel. It's about living life while you can and appreciating what you have. Your family and friends, just what christmas is all about. The characters are great, the music is great, the story is great, the use of comedy elements is great. If you haven't seen It's a Wonderful Life before, don't hesitate. Get it and watch it together with your family during Christmas and you'll just sit there thinking "YES" when it is over. I don't know, maybe I'm overrating it by being too weak for cheesy stuff but there's no denying that it is a good movie. "But Jokuc, what's up with the red and green titles? Are the green ones better than the red ones?" No, I just thought I'd throw in some xmas colors. it's a beautiful life Wonderful*
