movies/tv What do you think of the PPG Reboot?

I have been a fan of PPG ever since I was 5, I grew up with this show and the reboot was something that I really looked forward to. But as the promos show up, I'm not hopeful. Here's my two- cents

Animation/art style: Looks a lot like Steven Universe and Clarence. Very typical 2010s animation style. But the animation itself is fluent but a little off in some places. And the Girls designs are a bit off. I don't know, maybe it's because of the fangirl in me, but they don't look expressive or dynamic. They look kinda tame and a little bland.

So it's not impressive but not the worst thing ever, it just doesn't stand out.

Characters: They stay the same. But I don't see any indication that they're dynamic and show any depth besides their personality traits. In the promos we don't see much of Bubbles, Blossom fighting monsters or doing something unexpected of their character, like Buttercup reading a book or Bubbles seeking adventure. I know it has to be in character but CN is just reestablishing character traits when they don't need to. Because fans of the original would be tired of it since they already know what their characters are but at least the newcomers would understand (but I think they would get the gist of it) But still alienating the long time fans of the PPG franchise is a dick move.

Voice Acting: Good fucking god, the Girls voices are TERRIBLE! The only one kinda worked was Blossom's, but Buttercup sounds like a pre-teen lesbian and Bubbles sounds way off! She's just got that pre-teen sound it just doesn't fit! In fact the girls mostly sound the same which is crap because it doesn't emphasise their personalities. At least the other characters have the original voices, although I'm still pissed that the original voice actors for the Girls were given the middle finger by CN.

Story: Nothing much. The story synopsises are the same really. Just a standard PPG episode. So at least they got that nailed down. Only problem is that there won't be much drama, seriousness, dark episodes or character development. I know PPg was a comedy/action series but even the original had some pretty messed up episodes, and they were my favourite ones! I'm not expecting this to be Cartoon Networks version of Madoka Magica but come on, some depth and dynamics would be nice!

Entertainment: I have to admit some parts did make me giggle, but apart from that I just feel nervous and uncomfortable of how the show will turn out and praying it won't be another Teen Titans Go.

Overall: I'll give it a 6.5/10. A very noble try, CN but you need to realise when you do a reboot you got to please both newcomers and original fans. To do this, you must stay faithful to the original (voice acting, story-telling and all) but make it a unique show, don't try to be exactly like the original, just stay faithful to it but also try something different, like have character development, interesting stories or make a unique art style (and not just the exact same artstyle as Steven Universe and Clarence or be like Dance Pantsee for th love of God)

Try to please both or otherwise you'll just alienate everyone and the reboot will be nothing but a corporate cash grab. Give us a hint that it will be dark, give us a hint that it will be unique, try to stay truthful to the original source material but also grow from it. Think of new ideas tha would fit in this show and try to develop characters, have clever parodies, good comedy. Just try to stay faithful but also improve instead Of giving people the same bullshit we've come to expect from Cartoon Network reboots.

But I'll try to give it a chance. And if it turns out to be great then fantastic! I'll be glad to be proven wrong and CN can be misleading when it comes to promos. But if it fails, it just proves my point of how half-assed it all is. And considering me as someone who grow up with the show (heck it came out when I was 1!), just makes me sick to my stomach that the same network who supported this show and used to praise it is now milking it like a cash cow. Like PieGuyRulz said on his channel, t's so greedy and manipulative. But I want to like and look forward to it, but all I can do is await this reboot with anxious anticipation and a growing fear in the pit of my stomach.

So what do you think?

Do you guys think it's going to be great or not?

Is this reboot going to be another Teen Titans Go situation?

Animation: While nice, it doesn't suit the Powerpuff Girls

New voices: Okay i guess

New opening: Horrible

I'm really worried that the reboot is just going to constantly shove the whole girl power thing in our faces until it becomes a mere parody of the original. Judging by the new promo, it looks like this, with a sexist dude calling Buttercup a princess and then exaggerating how she doesn't fit the gender norm. That is not the Powerpuff Girls. That is feminist pandering at the very best.

I just pray it won't be as bad as Teen Titans Go.

I actually like what I've seen so far. The new voices don't sound like what I was hoping they would but I don't think they're bad. And I think the animation is good and the girls' new designs are pretty close to their original designs. I also love the new opening. The song is great and the animation for it is really cool. That's all I got for now. I don't think there's anything else for me to talk about at this time.

So far even without the original voice actresses which I find to be disappointing, I don't think it is going to be a bad show.

From the few clips of episodes and a 2 minute short as well as the new opening which I really enjoy, I am feeling cautiously optimistic about it.

I am going to check it out and hope for it to be good.

It'd be better if the PPG reboot retained the same animation as they did from the early 2000's. Otherwise, its best to be left ignored unless CN grows a spine by bringing back shows that were left out from 2005 and onwards.

The one big thing that pissed me off with this reboot was that they found new voice actors for the PPG, what is wrong with the originals?

Most modern reboots of cartoon classics usually always neglect and alienate their original fans, just look at Teen Titans Go...they made fun of their older fans in one episode with complete poor taste.

In my opinion this reboot doesn't sit good with me so far. :(

Here's my take on it so far:

The Good:

+ The Animation and art style are almost the spitting image of the original.

+ They got the girls' personalities perfectly.

+ Tom Kenny reprising his role as The Narrator.

+ The New Theme Song isn't half bad.

The Iffy

- The New Voice Actresses aren't terrible, but they don't stand out as much as the originals. Buttercup sounds fine but, Blossom and Bubble's voices sound like they should be switched.

-The Elementary School setting is refreshing, but kind of goes against the appeal of three little girls being superheroes.

- Without Craig McCracken, Lauren Faust, or Genndy Tartakovsky working on the show, I'm uncertain about the writing.

It's a mixed bag, but I'm sure it will be fine.

The animation is.. eh. It doesn't suck, but it's not the most creative. I prefer the animation the older series had much more, and I wish they used something like that instead. The voices aren't terrible either. I think Buttercup has probably the best voice. Blossom and Buttercup's voices are okay. The characters are pretty much the same, but we still haven't seen much of the show yet so we can't really tell. I can't wait to get more character development for them in more episodes.

But that opening.. ughhhhh

And yeah, I have to agree the stories are pretty much the same. The characters also feel the same which is nice. Although one thing that has been bugging me about the series is how Bubbles and Blossom are portrayed as pretty much useless without Buttercup. Buttercup is the strongest fighter of the group, but I'm pretty sure Bubbles and Blossom can fight off a monster fine without her (or at least not look totally vulnerable). I hate how we haven't seen any of the previous villains, the professor, or the mayor yet. I'm sure we will eventually, but still.

I do like the show though. It's not bad, just different. I'm pretty excited to see more. :)

It could have been better but the first episode was alright and the show still has my attention. The good news is, it isn't terrible. I have seen plenty of awful shows (Teen Titans Go, Ultimate Spider-Man, Avengers Assemble, Johnny Test, etc.) and this doesn't even make the cut. The problem is right now is that it's...okay. Just okay. However like I said, this is just the first episode and maybe it's just going through the "First few episode/first season rough patch". A lot of the shows I like had those so I'm going to need to see a few more episodes. I definitely see potential in it.

HOWEVER THAT OPENING, GOOD GOD, THAT WAS ASSAULT ON THE EARS!!!

About that intro: I watched the extended version (the one with the professor in the beginning) and liked it a lot more. I wish they had put that beginning part as the actual intro.

Anyways, I like the second episode A LOT better than the first one. I think the first one was a pitched episode so that's probably why. The third one is also fine, but the second episode is probably my favorite so far.

I kinda enjoyed it actually. Yeah, voice actors are different but it doesn't bother me at all. And I also liked that the show is also introducing new characters too. And of course the show sticking to filler format like the classic PPG show as well. Can't wait to see more of this to come in the future.  :pinkie:

I think a lot of people are upset over the stink that Tara Strong pulled so they are going into this wanting to not like it instead of a neutral mindset. I will be entering with a neutral head and not judge it based solely on the original and keep in mind it's designed to bring new fans. I'm giving these new girls a chance, I think what Tara Strong did was childish and soiled a lot of people's thoughts about the new cast but many are afraid to admit it.

From the shorts and previews, I'm feeling uncertain about the PPG reboot.

Although, I will not say I'll never watch it, since I want to see at least one episode first before making a decision.

Yeah I want to give it a chance and at least it's staying true to the original and the characters are the same, it's just the writing I'm worried about. Hopefully they might do dark and dramatic episodes later on or do something unique and clever. Something to make the show stand out. So far, I'm going to watch it, but I'm not going to be too hopeful since that first episode was shit.

Also I'm doing my own version of a reboot. This time, the PPG are teenagers and they learn more about themselves, their powers and what they want to do with their lives besides fighting crime. This will take place 5 years after the original and I'm making it comedic and clever, but also heart-warming, dramatic and dark sometimes. It's called Sugar, Spice, Nice and I ts a comic I'm working on at the moment but I'll do an animation when I posted enough.

Okay, so I saw the second episode and you know something? It was pretty fun. I liked it and it gives me a good feeling about how the show is going to turn out. However there is one major issue I had with this episode, It's something that should have been aired later. Now you're probably wondering "Coffee, if you liked the episode so much, why do you think it should have been aired later?" Well to be honest, the fatal flaw of this episode is that it already treats Princess Morbucks as an established character. Now, before you say "but we already know who she is!" yes, I'm aware of that. However it's only us, the old fans, who know who she is and how she operates. And this is something I applaud the episode on, they got Princess Morbucks spot on, this is totally something she would do, it's completely in character. But do keep in mind that this is a reboot, this is a show that's meant to introduce a new generation to the Powerpuff Girls, so while we, the people who grew up watching the original know who these villains are, the new generation of kids don't. I know some of you don't like hearing this but the new generation is the primary audience, we aren't, and while I do think it's a good idea to keep the older generation invested (Walt Disney's "If you only aim for kids, you've failed" quote and all that) you do have to keep the generation in mind. So while I liked the episode, I think they should have saved this one for later and that they should spend the time to reintroduce these villains for the new generation of fans. While I do appreciate that they're aiming to get the old fans attention, it felt like this episode was trying to get our attention only. New audiences who haven't seen the old show are probably going to think "Who are these characters?" and are probably going to be left confused as they don't know them.

So tl;dr, good episode but they've to think about the new audience and spend the time to introduce the classic villains to them.

I think this is my problem with the show so far: It's acting more like a new season than a new show.

Yeah, I agree with you on that. It's pretty good, but I'm not sure the younger audience will fully understand it.

I didn't even know there was going to be a reboot until I saw this thread. For nostalgia's sake I'm probably going to give it a try, but the one clip I saw just now seemed...slow, somehow. It lacked the speed the old cartoon seemed to have. Other than that, I don't see anything really bad about it.

Ew from the previews and the opening it looked like every typical children's cartoon show out there. Just a bunch of Rainbow Dash banter.
