I found this site that I thought was interesting, that lists a bunch of different words people use to describe horses. Here are some of the more interesting ones I saw.

Words for Horse

Filly (female young horse under 4)

Colt (male young horse under 4)

Barn Sour (a horse that doesn’t like to leave the barn)

Broodmare (a breeding horse)

Foal (baby horse)

Gelding (neutered male horse)

Hard Keeper (horse who’s weight is hard to maintain)

Jeanette (offspring of a Stud and Jennie)

Mare (adult horse)

Mule (horse/donkey offspring)

Pony (small horse breed, NOT a baby horse)

Purebred (horse that is theoretically perfect for breeding)

Rogue (horse with bad temper)

Sire (father of a horse)

Stallion (non-neutered adult male horse)

Weanling (a just-weaned horse)

I didn't know half of those words; I hadn't heard/read any other than filly, colt, foal, mare, mule, pony, stallion, yearling. Thanks for the additional info, might come in handy for my ELIT project.

If you're writing a fanfic, or even thinking of a parody Fic or series, this might be useful (FiM uses alot of these terms, for instance).

I'm bored, so I just clicked over to the end of the list..  Thread revival!!!

That's an interesting list.  Here's another:  Stag - a male horse that was castrated after puberty, and thus still retains a lot of the hormones and temper of a stallion.  Sometimes horseman will use the adjective "staggy" to refer to a male that's hot headed or difficult to handle.

Interesting factoid: a stud is a breeding farm, not a stallion used for breeding.  However, people use the term to refer to the horse so much that it may have been adopted as a common usage definition.

One of my minor surprises in life was when I found out a purebred WASN'T a Thoroughbred.  Thoroughbreds are a subtype of Arabians, descended from 1 of 3 horses (IIRC, I might not) & are the kind you usually see in horse races.

Another minor surprise.  Race horses are not the fastest horses.  Quarter horses are fastest over the quarter mile (400 meters) or less.

Finally, Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens once won a race vs a race horse.  For very short distances, the fastest humans are faster than the fastest horses.  Being smaller, we can out sprint them, it takes them a few seconds to hit top speed.
