gaming Game franchises that are overrated

What game franchises do you think is overrated? The most overrated ones are usually first person shooters for me. Call of Duty, Halo, now Overwatch ugh enough already.

Then other games that fall under the list would be Assassin's Creed, Metal Gear Solid, Minecraft, Pokemon.

It's a subjective question really; and I really don't like calling a game or series that someone likes overrated. They have their own reasons for liking what they do, so...yeah.

To answer your question, if I was to name one series that I would call overrated, I would probably have to go with the Grand Theft Auto series as I just don't see the overall appeal. I mean I can get why people enjoy some aspects thanks to various Let's Plays, but the games just feel a bit too repetitive for my own personal tastes.

I did enjoy Grand Theft Auto even though it is overrated and honestly I don't see any problem with people criticizing games I like, it's not like I own the game franchises anyway. Why I like Grand Theft Auto is that it was one of the first games that really stepped over the boundaries and let you play it as you felt like and every play was different giving replay value non-stop of course this is for the newest installments rather than the older ones that kind of sucked but what could those have been they were the first ones. It's also definitely a good game for Let's Play videos instilling rich humor due to it's replay value and it's reckless rebelling nature.

Bearing in mind that "franchise" means "a series of" and not just one, I would say in no particular order...

  • Grand Theft Auto. Lack-luster story each time, and the game is just recycled and polished each game.
  • Assassin's Creed. Lack-luster storylining and linear and repeat gameplay.
  • Need for Speed. Has not had a solid game release in almost a decade.
  • Call of Duty. Same reasons as Grand Theft Auto, with the addition of my ear-drums bleeding from online play. You know what I am speaking of.

No more really come to my mind right now.

"Time is just an illusionary factoid that all natural things are bound to. It has the power to crumble even the mightiest of mountains into little more than dust, yet if it is an illusion, why is this so? Because people waste a lot of time, only wishing they had more. Little do people realize an inescapable fact: Time governs those who wish they had more of it. By wishing you could use it better, you govern time, and you can get all the time you'll ever need." — Starfall, Quillwaver

Overwatch isn't a franchise.

For me, the list goes in no order, probably because I currently can only think of two:

Call of Duty: This franchise sells millions every year, despite the fact that the game lags behind all of its competition, has content locked out for DLC, has micro transactions AND a $50 season pass every year despite having no dedicated servers, the campaigns are always terrible these days and the list goes on and on and on. This series doesn't deserve success anymore. It is being run into the ground because of greed. Yay Activision I guess.

Five Nights at Freddie's: Okay, cool concept. I can appreciate that at least. Other than that? We got like, what, 5 games in the span of less than 2 years? Really? The game every time is essentially Night Trap on the Sega CD, except with loud jumpscares. Wow. Nobody liked Night Trap so I don't know how so many can love FNAF. Probably because all of the Let's Players that are pretending to love it. All for the glorious YouTube cash.

I just came to say Pokemon. I don't have anything against the game itself or its fans because that would be rude, but from what I've seen of it and from how much of it I'm hearing about, I'm beginning to hate it. I'm tired of seeing it all over the place and I'd prefer to never hear about it again unless I look it up or discuss it by choice.

You know, I love Pokemon, I really enjoy the games, but even I am tired of hearing about Pokemon Go. From what I have seen, it just doesn't have anywhere near the appeal of the real games so I don't see the point personally.

Definitely Pokemon. I like the anime, but the games are just so tedious and boring. I really don't see how anybody could play them for more than 5 minutes without turning it off. In addition to being boring,Pokemon does the same shit every year, just adding new Pokemon, and gets away with it. But,Call of Duty does the same thing and everybody bashes it.

Ok...I may be a Pokemon fan but even I think the Pokemon franchise is overrated. And it's annoying how Pokemon fans go on about how the Mario and Zelda franchises are the same old stuff and repetitive when the Pokemon franchise is repetitive as well and yet people eat it up like a chocolate cake.

And I am also an Ace Attorney fan and I think the Ace Attorney series is slightly overrated...I honestly don't like how one of my favorite video game series is being stretched out and being used as a cash cow. And sometimes I fear the Ace Attorney series is too cartoony for its own good...And Phoenix is a really overrated protagonist. I think he's insanely boring when he isn't with Maya.

....Sorry for coming off as depressing...

Also...Final Fantasy......When I finally played Final Fantasy for myself considering the fact that RPGs are my favorite genre I had INSANELY high hopes for Final Fantasy......What I got well...I honestly didn't consider it anything special. I feel like other RPGs have done better....

Me personally, i've always felt the The Legend of Zelda as overrated. Every game to me has been Link to the Past/Ocarina of Time Part #, with only the smallest of changes or an outright gimmick like Wolf-Link to try and make it seem different.

I've only ever played the first Killzone, but I always found it an incredibly bland and uninspired game, and am surprised that the series has gotten as many games as it did.

I don't know how the rest of the games are, haven't played 2 or 3 but heard they're much better, but Shadowfall sounds just as trite as the first game

I feel like most franchises are overrated, honestly. There's only a few that really seem to hold up over time and even fewer that don't fall from grace midway through. And then, of course, there's the more subjective stuff where my own taste in games dictates what I see as 'overrated'. But yeah, a list, I guess:

- Mario

- Pokemon

- Elder Scrolls

- Call of Duty

- FNAF (Why even IS it a franchise. smh.)

- Uncharted (Just in MY opinion. The games are good, but this is about being overrated rather than overall quality.)

- Tomb Raider

- Grand Theft Auto

I could probably say Halo too, but my judgement is clouded by my own bias on that one because I truly enjoy the games a lot.

The big one for me: Minecraft. It's bad enough with the endless youtube channels, the merchandise and the cons, but apparently some teachers are using it for freaking teaching. If you're going to do that, use minetest instead which is free software and is designed to be extended. You could actually use that for introducing them to Lua or even C++ if you want to teach them to tweak the game engine itself.

I'm gonna have to agree with the whole FNAF thing being overrated. But I did enjoy watching people freak out over it so maybe there's a bit of merit there?

The Last of Us. It’s alright but I don’t get why people rave about it like it’s the Citizen Kane of video games. I still think Uncharted 2 is Naughty Dog’s magnum opus.

Five Nights at Freddy’s. The first one was fun and mildly scary for about 30 minutes. Then it just got boring.

Friendship isn't always easy. But it's definitely worth fighting for.

I don't like using the word overrated at all. If a game did enough to become successful in the first place, then it probably deserves the praise it gets.

Personally I could never get into the Fallout series. I played 3 and New Vegas for a while, but I just couldn't get engaged enough to keep playing. I'm sure they're quality games, but they weren't really my thing.

At first I rejected the zero, but that was because I simply didn't understand it. Now I do.
