Could Starswirl have been Celestia's consort? (Or Luna's?)

Is there anything in canon/B-canon (comics, Journal of the Two Sisters, etc.) that contradicts the idea? It seems odd that neither Celestia or Luna have ever been married, that we can see, and if any stallion were worthy of marrying an alicorn, it would be the greatest wizard in Equestrian history. Maybe he was the reason Celestia started the School for Gifted Unicorns in the first place.

Well, there's nothing in SHOW canon that contradicts that claim, but the canon of the comics does in a way.  During the Reflections story arc, Celestia fell in love with Mirror!Sombra, and Starswirl more played the part of a mature caretaker who had more interest in keeping Celestia from tearing apart their universe that pursuing a romantic relationship.

Neither canons speak of a relationship between Starswirl and Luna, though.  AFAIK, the two never interacted.

Starswirl seemed kind of like a mentor figure to the two in the journal. Pretty sure it was even mentioned that his mane had grown grey or white, while the two sisters still seemed young and somewhat immature. I think the intended age difference just wouldn't make Starswirl compatible with either Celestia or Luna in a romantic sense.

I'd say Star Swirl was more of an eccentric character who had quirky moments that Twilight unknowingly adopts although that might just be for humour purposes. Star Swirl acted as a mentor to Celestia who did what he did as a means of protecting her and ensuring that Equestria wouldn't go down a dark path. He didn't interact as much with Luna although he might have been aware that she was growing distant in the waning years before she became Nightmare Moon.

Starswirl doesn't seem like the type to be tied down to a mare though. I do wonder why Celestia and Luna aren't looking for mates at all for all this time.

star swirl? nah m8 we haven't seen anything coz i haven't found the mirror portal thing yet ;L when i do the snow and celestia wedding episode will be even better than shining and cadence one :L

as for the school for unicorns idea... my head cannon is that upon nightmare moons return there would be some pony capable of saving luna and like.. the rest of equestria :/ clearly celestia couldn't use the elements of harmony to reform, only to banish (and some other stuff like turn to stone.. we haven't seen much...) and to banish her beloved sister for another 1000 years? yeeaaa that's not on. but celestia fond the pupil she was looking for just in time lol :P

luna was on the moon... duh. and celestia had an entire kingdom to run by herself.. also she outlives everypony :/ so.. whats the point in emotional attachment to somepony that wont stay with you long?

Of course they have! You think in several thousand years, banishment or not, that the opportunity hasn't made itself apparent? Putting aside the fact that alot of kingdoms go by the rule of marrying off a daughter to broker a peace, and if your immortal, you don't really have to worry too much about consequences, so maybe, spend a night with the invading conqueror & maybe he'll feel a bit better about your place...

THAT aside! Prince Blueblood I believe was called by Celestia herself as some sort of great-great grandnephew in one of the episodes, so she at least has at some point. Would stand to reason that one of the reasons the Canterlot nobility is as tight as it is, is because quite a few of them can link their lineages back to the still-current rulers. A consort or a one night tryst in what would be only a few months to a princess could by today be an entire race! Besides...they're still ladies, and a lady still gets lonely from time to time.

Though to answer the question, think the ages don't quite match up. Even regular ponies like Granny Smith live an impossibly long time. Would stand to reason it'd take quite a few decades for Starswirl to be an accomplished enough a magician to be renown enough to be put in charge of the upcoming rulers. Say, he started young in his training, at 10. Give a good 20-30 years for him to hone his craft and he'd be a decently aged unicorn by the time the sisters needed a mentor. As they aren't older, or written into the timeline before, than Equestria itself they would have been roughly teens at the time. Which...granted...still gives you just a small window, but small nonetheless!

Though...that first bit I quoted....as Starswirl didn't "understand the power of friendship" that kind of implies he wasn't one for relationships as a whole.....

Beatings & Salivations Everybeing!   Creativity is something blatantly important to me as is no doubt evidenced by the 28 OCs I have posted here of the some forty plus I have, they're linked altogether at the bottom of my About Me page in my Profile & I would deeply cherish anything you wish to say about them! Among which of those I am proudest most of is my Draconequusona, His/My Ask Thread  and my Hydra, Gallimaufry or "Mauf" and their own Ask Thread!  Either way, sufficed to say, I am quite confident I have more OCs than you! Crazier to! Do You have a tatzelpony?! No, I rather think you don't! Hew-Hew-hew!
