general Current vocabulary?

Ok where are all these weird words coming from today? I understand swag because that's from the pirate era. But on fleek, yolo, things like that. Where did it come from and what does half of it mean? Also which ones can you not stand and why?

vocabulary is a way to figure out who your clique is.  its only natural for groups to come up with jargon and use it.

some of the time, new vocab helps to communicate better...

but most of the time, it is used to exclude the outsiders.  I try to avoid jargon as much as possible, because I don't want the people around me to feel excluded.

The words used on the Internet I usually understand, but I have no clue whatsoever what half the street language kids these days use means. To be fair to them, I didn't understand my generation's street language either, except for one word and that word was purely accidental. That one word was 'kill' for 'guy', and the reason I understood that one was because the village I used to live in had a dialect in which the word 'kerel' ('dude') was pronounced as something close to 'kill', so I sort of grew up with that one.

As for the words I cannot stand, on the Internet I mainly hate the word 'bae'. It just sounds stupid. There are others words and phrases online I despise, but I won't mention them in this thread.

IRL, the word I hated most when I was in school was 'tantoe' (pronounced something like 'tahntoo', for English speaking people). It's a slang term that means 'cancer', and that in turn is an expletive people in the Netherlands use much like 'fuck' is used in English speaking countries. I hated that particular slang because I felt that if you were going to use cancer as a swear word, at least have the balls to actually say it instead of hiding behind stupid, made-up words. For the record, I myself used to use cancer as an expletive liberally, but these days I tend to avoid it unless I'm monumentally pissed.

The human race is getting lazy as computers do more and more for us, shortening words and phrases into slang is just a side effect of this.

I can't stand 'yas', because it serves no purpose it's the same length as yes and just sounds stupid. I also don't like 'lit' because I always hear it used in ways that make whoever is using it sound really obnoxious.

I understand swag

Do you really?

SWAG is the number of squares on your belly, when you are flexing your muscles (showing off how strong you are). Usually you can get 6 squares or (6 SWAG), but for people that are taller than 9"8 can have up to 9.

Yolo stands for You Only Live Once

So whenever a person is about to do something stupid, spontaneous, or whatever they'd say "Yolo"

It's not a popular phrase anymore. Haven't heard anyone use it in a while.

"On fleak" means perfect, flawless. It's basically the same as "On Point"

The more new words like “yeet” I hear, the more brain cells I lose.

Blame the current generation for that garbage.

@Lightning Cloud I keep a file in my computer. It’s one of my constants in life. And all I keep on the file are words that I would never ever use in a story or screenplay. “Yeet” is one of them.

If it seems like a word that isn't real, then I don't use it.
