general media Favorite Christmas Carol Adaptation

BrawnyCharger

Recommended Posts

Every Christmastime, I like so many people, watch various Christmas specials on TV and or YouTube. Like so many. I'm a fan of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

Of course everypony knows that it has had many adaptations through the years. MLP had it's version this season. But what I would like to know is what everypony's favorite adaptation of A Christmas Carol is. Animated, Live action, etc.

I love the Christmas Carol story, probably my favorite Christmas story of all time. I've seen a bunch of adaptations but my favorites have to be the Disney one (with Mickey, Uncle Scrooge and so on) and this TV movie. I dearly love both <3

My favourite version would be Mickey's Christmas Carol from 1983. Sure it was short compared to other versions, but it also had a lot of charm to it and the voice cast was very memorable. I believe it was one of the last times the late Clarance "Ducky" Nash got to voice Donald Duck before he passed away sometime in either 1984 or 1985.

I'd actually have to say the live radio play I attended, putting a very Wisconsin twist on the Christmas Carol, featuring members of the WTMJ news crew, local business owners and a few state celebrities.

I've always been a fan of Mickey's Christmas Carol and the Muppet Christmas Carol as well as the Scrooged movie with Bill Murray. But in recent years I've taken a liking to the 1951 version with Alistair Sim and the 1984 Made for TV version with George C. Scott.

One's I watch on almost a yearly basis:

Mickey's Christmas Carol

Scrogged

TNT's A Christmas Carol starring Patrick Stewart. They show it on TV still, but they've cut some scenes which I'm not a fan of. My favorite part of that movie was when they travel to different prisons and ships and coal mines to see everyone celebrating Christmas in their own way, which they either cut completely or shorten to where it makes no sense.

I think that was his absolute last time as Donald. He was also personally training Tony Anselmo, who voice's Donald to this day!

I've watched interviews of Tony Anselmo over the years and he always brings up how he was trained by Clarence to carry on his legacy by voicing Donald--his facial expressions are hilarious every time he speaks as the duck. I do know that Clarence lived to see Donald's 50th birthday in 1984 and there's a video on YouTube where both he and Anselmo speak in their respective voices to the nursery rhyme of Little Boy Blue. I believe Clarence died in 1985.

I'll admit I have a lot of catching up to do with this, but by far and away the ones I try to watch as often as possible are the Alastair Sim version and Mickey's Christmas Carol. The 2009 Jim Carrey/ImageMovers/Disney one is a great visual spectacle as well, and really lays it on with the creepy stuff. I haven't yet seen the George C. Scott version and I'm trying to hunt down the Patrick Stewart version since it's not available on any streaming sites not named Amazon.

My favorite is the Looney Tunes version with Daffy Duck.

My favourite faithful adaptation of the story is the 1951 film staring Alastair Sim. Sim was primarily a comedic actor before this film but he performed Scrooge impeccably and let his comedic side shine when Scrooge awoke on Christmas morning.

Another interesting take on the story was a British made-for-tv movie set in the modern day, featuring Edward Scrooge as a ruthless loan shark.

As far as more unorthodox versions go, one of my faves was from the cartoon Real Ghostbusters. The Ghostbusters accidentally get sent back to Victorian England where they capture the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come before they had the chance to influence Scrooge. After they return to the present and place the Spirits in the ghost containment unit, they realize that they altered history, and now Scrooge's miserly philosophy on Christmas has widespread acceptance. So, half the Ghostbusters go back in time to try and trick Scrooge into believing the Spirits are visiting him while the other half enter the containment unit to retrieve the Ghosts of Christmas.

And, for a reversal of the idea, as well as just plain silliness, there's Blackadder's Christmas Carol where Ebenezer Blackadder is shown his descendants will rule the universe if he becomes less philanthropic and more cruel instead.

I just rewatched the Jim Carrey/Disney version. I have to say that Carrey's performance(s) are very well, and I think that he deserves a lot of credit.

If you have cable, it MIGHT be on TNT On Demand. It was for the last two years.

I like the Patrick Stewart one the best. It's really faithful to the original material and Patrick Stewart  gives a good performance. I love the Muppets and Mickey as well, both are staples of the season for me.

The 2009 Christmas Carol starring Jim Carry was not exactly a hit with the critics, but I love that movie. Sure, it gets incredibly dark at one point, but it makes the ending that much better. It makes for an incredibly happy payoff, moreso than any other adaptation of the book that I have seen. The animation, while a tad inconsistent at times, is still gorgeous and the voice acting is absolutely superb.

If they could somehow remaster this movie in 4K, I would buy that instantly.
