My top favorites are the oboe/English horn, saxophone (alto or lower), bassoon, and bass clarinet. The trumpet/trombone/saxophone combo in pop/rock music is sublime. I'll probably never play them. That's fine. Just kind of sad these instruments have been pushed aside. Nerdy Luigi 2,065 December 21, 2016 Share December 21, 2016 I did play the tuba and baritone (a little bit) in high school (I was six spots from a statewide concert my junior year on tuba), but if I actually had to pick a favorite in terms of sound, I really like French Horns. I like the range of pitches and just the way the instrument sounds them out. Though the thing I don't like would be playing one. The joy I get when I perfect a song is unlike anything that i've experienced before. I highly recommend it as a 1st instrument for those who have no music background. It sounds amazingly good when it's played slow, and in some cases played fast as well. I love the way it sounds especially over acoustic guitar.
