Anime is by far my biggest love/hate relationship. There are some shows and movies in the genre that I adore, but there's a lot more that I cannot stand thanks to horrendous writing, cliches out the ass, and characters that exist to be one-note archetypes. Japan loves its cliches and cringy dialogue.

One show that I originally seen as a huge exception to this was Attack On Titan. Sure, it has its character tropes like everything else in the genre, but the world was so mysterious and the titans themselves were such an amazing threat that made everything feel grand and at stake. The first episode of the show is one of my favorite pieces of media in existence and I still get chills every time I see it.

However, AOT has pretty much been ruined for me after season 3 and that doesn't leave me with much else to love in anime. Everything else I have gotten into either had a very short run or was canceled.

Possible spoilers ahead.

Season 3 AOT was a massive disappointment and it came after the equally disappointing season 2. The first half of S3 was mostly related to people and corruption. Fine, it was a cool idea, but it also meant that titans were not a threat in the slightest during the first half and Historia, a character I already hated from S2, becomes even worse. Okay, first half was meh, what about the second half? It had an awesome start, but the moment they go into the basement, which was teased in the very first episode, this is where the show falls a fucking cliff.

I don't want to majorly spoil anything of course, but what they find in the basement....we all assumed it would give us at least some answers. What we didn't know going in is that it would give is literally every damn answer to everything. Every little detail that could have been filled with mystery and intrigue is now out the window. Titans are no longer special at all, the world outside of the walls is perfectly fine (except for some corrupt people which, wowee) and the people within the walls are just a tiny fraction of the actual world, which means they aren't special anymore either. Pretty much all of what season 3 did was purely to setup a war scenario for season 4, which has been confirmed to be the final season of the whole shabang. So it is no longer people fighting off titans, it is back to people fighting people with some titan powers thrown off. Fuck. Off.

What started as a show that pulled me in immediately with its massive scale, its mystery, its plight for those within the walls and its seemingly hostile outside world, has now crumbled into "Good vs. Evil". Even the end of season 3 is summed up with "Oh, we gotta kill the bad people and then we'll be free." WOW, never could have thought of such a revelation. Now I'm just depressed. I had so much passion for this show and its lore, but the writers have taken that passion and thrown it into a grinder. I don't even know if I still care enough to even watch season 4, because I don't give a shit about that world anymore because there's absolutely no mystery left.

While I am not agreeing on all the hate part because I still enjoy it, but I can barely imagine it going into too much plot afterwards after that is resolved - if you are creating an horror anime bound in mystery and that mystery is gone - what does set you apart from other creations and make you special?

There are still some things to be revealed, or maybe not even, such as some relations in the outside world as well as how titans actually happened to exist.

Also, I somewhat also disliked part in s1; the endless training in the camp where not much happened action wise and felt like a grindfest, and the female titan arc where it felt like the plot wasn't really developening much at all. The plot would have lost much if that arc would have been half as many episodes.

Sure, there's still some questions, but the fact that the namesake of the entire series, the titans, are no longer special in any way and the world simply isn't what they seemed to setup in episode 1. The world now seems so basic and unoriginal. I can't even begin to describe the feelings that the first episode gives me, and how the show has almost none of that now.

Funny thing, the training camp is how it should be done in my opinion. It shows how the characters think they have so much power and they all get riled and filled with hope, then the show punches you in the face with intensity and death, which worked perfectly. It was a slowdown that lead to very impactful moments later. Season 3 and season 2 really, they didn't do that much at all. Most of it was setup...more setup...mooooore setup...season 4 setup and more setup. There are some great moments in both of those seasons, the beginning of the 2nd half of season 3 in particular almost gave me the same feeling as episode 1, I was so excited for it all. Then that battle ended and it all fell off a cliff.

My thoughts are so scattered right now because it is making me so irritated. I just hope season 4 comes at me with something surprising. Something that catches me off guard, because this whole war scenario was something I was predicting since early season 3.

I've seen way too many anime to count but I will say my favorite anime of all time is Higurashi

The only anime I'm currently watching are:

Seton Academy Join the Pack: I love my anthro girls and I especially love Ranka so much

Heya Camp: I adored Yuru Camp and I'm glad to get somewhat of a sequel even if it's just a shorts series

I'm enjoying both a lot so far

OMG I've been watching that too! I love it so much!

Ranka is adorable.

I've seen a trailer of that anime and it looks pretty funny, in my opinion. Is it worth a watch?

In terms of anime I'm seeing at the moment. I'm watching the new season of My Hero Academia and a new anime called Nekopara. I'm also thinking of watching Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It.

Yeah, definetley worth the watch. It's fairly new, so there are only about 4 episodes out now. I've been watching them on YouTube.

I've been watching some of the new anime on Facebook. If not, then I watch them on anime websites on my PS4. I might give the anime a watch as it looked funny and awesome to watch. Thanks for the recommendation. :D

I am reading a few books of the Bleach manga, and I went back to watch a few episodes from the anime as well. I never feel like watching the whole thing again. :scoots:

I could never get into Bleach or Naruto.

Which I am constantly ridiculed for.

I haven't been able to get into Naruto, probably because the animation style changed so much. I am mostly inspired by the art, before I get invested in the story.

Bleach only gets interesting after the first season, when the captains are introduced, as well as the bad guy.

I can understand that. I feel like when it comes to Shounen anime, or any anime in general. The art and choreography for certain fights can really make the battle anime, or anime in general interesting and fun to watch.

I actually have the first season on box set, but I hadn't gotten a chance to watch the rest of the series. I was hoping to collect the box sets, but I could never find them in any store like Best Buy. Then again, I did skip to certain fights when they were airing on Toonami. I might try and give the show another chance in the near future.

Oniisama e... Absolute masterpiece art style hits me right in the heart, the old school shoujo, just perfect.

Another one I'm currently checking out Versailles no Bara by the same author it's bit slower at the start but I've heard the that the second half is insane. LotGH level insane. So im looking forward to it.

Naruto is decent if you skip the fillers which is basically over 50% of the whole series.

Bleach is there as well though I haven't really gotten into it.

Here I am promoting a new Anime, Shokugeki No Soma. Well, it's foodporn, with boobs and sht. It's funny and Tsundere girl, Nakiri Erina is cute as fck.

Currently, they're 11(12?) episodes in and new episode is coming on Friday, while comic is 121 chapters in. Currently, on the anime, the students are on a camp where the judges are alumni. Failure to satisfy the judges and the students is expelled on the spot (Well, a chef school with 10% grad rate is no joke).

Just look at this MC. So awesome.

tumblr_inline_nnu9iflNpK1s6lw3t_500.gif

Shokugeki had decent first couple seasons but the latest was just dissappoinment same with Nanatsu no Taizai the manga has already been going downhill and now Deen has destroyed the last hopes the anime had left.

@China (100% NOT China) :o You didn't like ANGEL BEATS?! :sealed: It still makes me cry every time I watch it. Sometimes just listening to the ED does it. I really liked how music was such a huge part of the show and all of the original songs written by Jun Maeda. I think it was Studio Key's first original anime, which wasn't based on a pre-existing VN. The pacing was a lot rushed though, and so many characters didn't get enough screen time.

Netflix has some pretty good ones. There's Code Geass: Lelouche of the Rebellion (it's kinda like Death Note, Gundam, and V For Vendetta rolled into one), Fate/zero (same studio as God Eater, so visuals, music, and overall production value are super, super good), Food Wars (high-school Iron Chef, it's a bit pervy though), Haikyuu (one of the best shonen sports animes). And if you have Hulu, it has Hellsing Ultimate (the best dark, bloody, vampire action anime ever!), and Black Clover (kinda like Naruto but with magic instead of ninjas).

Right now I'm trying to get through The Seven Deadly Sins: Wrath of the Gods. The censorship is annoying and somewhat distracting. And baffling. The previous seasons didn't have white blood... :please: But at least the story developments are interesting and good. I might like this series enough to pick up from the manga after I finish the anime. :darling:

I couldn't watch Seven Deadly Sins anymore. The main male character (Meliodas?) constantly randomly groping the main female character (Elizabeth?) is not only super irritating, but it's also really disturbing (IIRC, the first time it happened, Elizabeth was unconscious.). And let me tell you, the series (I've watched the whole first season and like maybe a few episodes of the second) really didn't have much there to make it worth watching anyway. I remember the ending of the first season having some real a**-pulls, and really unless I already love the series, when I see stuff like that it kills it for me. It's also why I am struggling to finish watching Fairy Tail.

SDS, since it is shorter, might have at least been watchable for me, but that groping. It's disgusting. It really killed the series for me. I can't stand it. I don't find it funny for even one second. The god-awful President in my country bragged about groping and people still voted for him, still acting like he's some messiah for the right. It's not something to make light of, ever.

Anyway, I'm watching the Fruits Basket remake right now. I never got through the original. I'm further along in the remake than I ever got in the original. The series seems so light on the surface but there's a lot to take in. It doesn't help that I stopped watching this for like a year and I'm picking it back up from where I left off. Lol.

@China (100% NOT China) Yes, I saw your blog post so I knew you had watched God Eater (I like that one a lot, and the games too :yay:). That's why I tossed Fate/zero out there. It was meant as a prequel to the Fate/stay night series (which you do not need to watch beforehand), but Zero outshines it in every way. The guy who wrote it, Gen Urobuchi, also wrote Puella Magi Madoka Magica, if you've heard of that one. His style of writing can get very dark.

Pretty much anything done by studios Ufotable and Key are visually stunning. And anything with Jun Maeda or Yuki Kajiura tied to the music in some way will be auditorily (is that the right word?) brilliant.
