And yes, I know that you are referring to the IRL story behind the naming of that specific apple (the fruit). The IRL name, I mean, not the elder Pony. I just am not sure if you realize that, or if this is just a late April Fools Day thing. If you are serious, we can definitely discuss etymology and naming conventions on the show.

For some reason she can be called Mary when she was young

Granny Smith is named after Real Life Granny Smith

Apple Family is actually named The Sherwood Family

They must keep the last name Sherwood because their grandmother Maria Ann Sherwood must be remembered on their memories

Granny Smith is old but when she was young,she was a badass apple harvester and a great cider maker that can make a many ciders at once

Her greatest memories making many ciders at once is the most Apple Family's precious treasure to the next generations so Apple Family keep that surname to every relatives of Apple Family to continue her legacy to make and sell her ciders

The Flim Flam family is the rival to Apple family for many years just because which the better cider in Equestria

Flim Flam Brothers' father is a rival to Granny Smith for many years because she hates his polluting cider making factory industry(The factory have many chimneys and make an air pollution and Granny Smith hates pollution) and his cider

To Granny Smith Flim Flam Brothers' ciders is not fresh and not natural because it's making is using machine

Flim Flam Brothers' ciders is insulted by Granny Smith because it's not natural and she insult it by saying it was low quality cider created by an air polluting cider machine

You then jump to the conclusion that since the fruit is named after a real person, the pony character is also named after the real person. You go further than that by stating that Granny Smith (the pony) is not just named after the fruit but also is named after the person the fruit is named after as a form of tradition, while not being directly related to Ms. Sherwood. 

So, question to your logic. Can a Granny Smith apple tree also bear Macintosh apples? Can a Granny Smith apple be crossed with another apple to create a Macintosh apples? If not, why would the family embrace different apple naming conventions of other types of apples? What was their motivation and is there a more reasonable explanation why Granny Smith has her name (the Apple family just names children after various apple based products and fruit).

I haven't read the comics so I don't know if they did include a family history connection with the Flim Flam brothers and Granny Smith's side of the family. 

Anyway, I'm certain that Applejack's last name isn't Sherwood. Some ponies do have surnames that seem to be passed down (The Cakes and Pies for instance). We don't have a direct cannon surname for Applejack's family mentioned, though I have always taken it to be like a clan name in a sense.

I just find it really funny to imagine her as a filly around Apple Bloom's age, but still being called Granny Smith.

If Granny Smith isn't her real name, than I would just assume her name would be Annie Smith.

Okay this is too complex for me to even understand. I just keep it simple by saying Applejack said "Granny Smith discovered the first Granny Smith apple when she was just a little filly" so it gave some possibility as to why she was called Granny Smith, maybe even before she was an actual old enough to be a granny
