Adult humor in children's programing

Movies and tv animations are usually always putting in adult humor, though the target demographic is for younger audiences who wouldn't get it. Do you guys find these "adult humor" references very appealing, or even humorous? Is it unnecessary to even have adult "humor" in these children shows and movies? Is it a lazy way out, to appeal to the parents, rather than giving clean, quality content that the whole family can enjoy?

I'm for having it in. It makes kids shows more tolerable for parents then and makes it something they can enjoy. In MLP's case, I often find it really funny. For example, there are many euphemisms for swear words such as "flying feather" and such, which I find to be pretty clever and humorous.

I love those little bits. These days they're pretty much the reason I watch children's shows at all. The ones that handle it well, like Gravity Falls and Star vs. the Forces of Evil manage to be really funny while still being fully accessible to children because 'adult' jokes and references that kids wouldn't get can still be funny enough on their own to amuse children as well.

Clean, quality content for the whole family, is rarely something that can be enjoyed by the whole family. The best shows have a little something that everybody can get a laugh out of. I think Walt Disney said it best: "A film that only children can enjoy is not a good film at all."

Plus throwing ion adult jokes makes watching said product again as an adult all the better. Cause then you understand jokes that you didn't get the first time.

That kind of thing is included so that adults would recognize such references as they watch the show with their children or watch it of their own volition. Sure, the children wouldn't get the references but then they don't need to so long as their enjoyment isn't tarnished. Besides, they were able to get away with an awful lot back in the 1990s though these days they have to be a little more subtle with the references.

I usually find them offensive, tbh. When I'm watching a "kids show" I usually do it as a form of escapism; in other words to escape from the problems associated with every day adult life. Forcing this type of humor into shows/ movies like this generally tends to break my immersion :T

I think it's fine, but sometimes it feels forced. I saw the live action Beauty and the Beast movie and I found some adult references that felt really forced in and unnecessary. I feel like it is a good idea to include a fair amount of adult humor in kid's cartoons because it makes it more tolerable for the parent, but to a very small extent because I think that it should only be included if it fits well and is actually funny. You do not see adults going around and giggling about the word penis, and sometimes it feels like that kind of "humor" is included in children's media.

do you believe someone can produce a quality kids' movie or show without adult humor in it, and itstill be just as entertaining for the parents?

you don't need it to be just for children, but I believe that adult humor isn't necessary for the adults to enjoy it as well. Mostly because the "humor" is raunchy, and ill suited for that form of media, anyway.

I have no problem with it at all. If it works it works, if it doesn't it doesn't. Sometimes, it's usually just fun to see what they can get away with. Fuck, in Megas XLR, they had a joke/reference about tentacle hentai and how it got passed the radar never ceases to amaze me

Just because it's a kids show doesn't mean they can't put in humor aimed at adults as well, it doesn't have to be to be suggestive, offensive, sexual, etc.,, just be a situation adults can laugh at

^Still one of the funniest things I've ever seen in a cartoon

There are a lot of shows that use some adult humor without being offensive. Disney can often use references adults would get but kids wouldn't without being crazy or out there with it. I've seen MLP make jokes adults can appreciate. As a go back and watch movies I enjoyed as a kid and still enjoy I often say "Oh, I didn't get that as a kid, now I do!" I found a list (clean list nothing bad) of jokes adults will get but some kids might not on this wiki: http://pixar.wikia.com/wiki/Adult_Humor

Adult humor in children's cartoons certainly does help adults enjoy the show more, but if show/movie has a good enough story, animation, and general quality, I don't think it needs any at all. A good and 100% clean film or TV show can be enjoyed by anyone.

I don't mind a bit of adult humor if it's done subtly. Most cartoons these days beat the audience over the head with it because their writers never matured past grade school and rely on the easy payoff of fart jokes dirty humor. Animaniacs and Tiny Toons from the early '90s had the right balance. Most of the sly humor would go right over the heads of the younger kids while still appealing to the older demographic that also liked the shows. It would be nice if someone could get it right nowadays, but so much of the lower-grade garbage gets such a following that it seems inappropriate humor is here to stay. Very unfortunate.

I don't mind, anyways many adult jokes incomprehensible for kids.

But cartoons teach kids much more than many people think so there should be some moral limits. We are responsible for children's future.

I'm okay with adult reference in kids' shows, along it doesn't apply to sexual content.

A huge range of comedy is under the umbrella of adult humor. You also have to contend with the question if it is used as a benefit of the viewer vs. self indulgence. I'll play devil's advocate and put on my "Corporate Marketing Firm" hat.

Read the following in the voice of JK Simmons.

"Yes! Writers listen up. It's a known correlation that when parents watch a cartoon with their kids and you get them to laugh, they are more likely to spend money on the product. Let me put it this way, you want to be able to afford to buy new pillowcases to replace the ones you ruin with your blasted tears crying over your wasted artistic vision? Funny it up for the makers of those snot nosed twerps or you'll be out of a job, penniless, and forced to season your ramen with those salty tears! A LIFE OF RUINED PILLOWCASES DROWNING IN THE DEATH LAMENT OF SOGGY DREAMS! GET OUT AND DO IT!!!"

Humor that gets parents to laugh while watching with the kids reinforces memories of the show which influences buying habits.

Also, there are writers that just don't want to get bored so they toss in things they like personally. Pony staff does this.

oh dude this is the whole reason my partner and I love cartoons as adults.

The two (one very surprising) that we comment on the most with adult humour is The Amazing World of Gumball (freaking fantastic for it) and Peppa Pig - They spoof Simpsons jokes and Peppa is sometimes given quite grown up bitch traits/jokes, for example the infamous whistle scene

This is 100% real and in the show and I lost my ***t when I first was shown this clip.

Pretty much the whole of Cartoon Network has had innudenos and adult humour in their shows and the early Nick toons where not aimed for kids really were they? lol
