Interesting, I couldn't imagine choosing anything else over brown/black because of actual hair colour, and I think the coat was influenced by Fancypants/Rarity.

Truth be told, I get some mane-styling gel from Rarity's Carousel Boutique... My mane is usually flatter than this, so I have to use gel to spike it up.
