Drunkfrank 1,125 October 4, 2017 Share October 4, 2017 @Jeric I will just assume you know this. Are early screenings like the few going on throughout this past week included in opening weekend box office numbers?
Moved to Elsewhere 11,331 October 4, 2017 Share October 4, 2017 I just realized how hard I have to spoiler dodge on Friday. I'm not seeing it until the evening and there will be people seeing it the night before. Heck, I'm aready having to do it with these leaks and early screenings.

Are early screenings like the few going on throughout this past week included in opening weekend box office numbers? Yes and no. There's separate reporting for presales and for pre-Friday viewings that the general audience attends. I want to make sure I'm not talking about that. It gets complicated when you consider promotional screenings. Many times these are paid for by the Studio and/or the Distributor. Some screenings are contest generated, like calling in to a radio station and winning tickets to a special screening days (or sometimes weeks in advance) of a films release. This used to be the most popular way to see a film early and they were called 'Radio Sneaks'. The venue could also push their own promotion with assistance and permission of the Studio and Distribution through their Exhibitor Relations contact. This was actually what I did as an intern. As far as how that is counted, it depends. This is where things get complicated and it all depends on how the Distributor handles the accounting here. They are paying for these promotional screenings tickets. They sometimes right these off as a marketing expense as part of the film's marketing budget so it does not count at all. Sometimes they count the 'revenue' by assigning value to each pass used and this is factored in as a positive for the film. After doing that they 'cancel' it out in a general marketing expense budget. A shady practice, but it is done widely enough. ERC (a firm that works on data regarding box office) does it's best to remove these figures, but is reliant on how a chain reports. Theaters themselves tend to use separate columns but as they are getting paid for screenings they do include then as attendence revenue. The omit internal passes given for presentation issues and employee perks (though sometimes a certain amount of that can be 'billed' to the Distributor). So internal figures for Lionsgate may not match Theater grosses. Both report to the media. The media usually uses Theater reported figures. It's not an easy industry to do data analysis for.
