Is being a nerd a bad thing...?

Yes and no.

Anything can be a bad, depending on how you go about it or how deeply you are something.

Honest answer? No, it is not a bad thing to be a nerd. I would consider that a quirk and a cute one as well.

Honestly, being cool never did anything for anyone did it?

Actually, it is a HUGE advantage in life to easily attract affection from others. You can get away with just about anything, and you have so many resources to aid in your success. If you're cool, people always want to be around you and get your attention. How cool is that!

But I think you might have something else in mind...like the pretentious, look-at-me show off poser type? Well, that's not actually cool, that's just being a poser.

From others that only care about how "cool" you are and not who you really are. Not as much of an advantage as it may seem.

I didn't necessarily have that in mind, but that REALLY never helped anybody.

Ah, I see, you're describing tribalism. It's a real thing. We're kinda biologically tuned for it. I mean, before the modern era humans were tribal for thousands and thousands of years.

Even now though, social conformity is a very strong interaction. It's all about having a sense of security and belonging, things which we all need to stay healthy. But it does get corrupted and petty - there's no doubt.

It's a deep topic worth thinking/reading about.

I guess it's not, I've been 'complimented' many times by people that I'm a geek, and I like being called like that.

Of course, nerd =/= geek but I guess there's nothing wrong with being a nerd, we're all different and we all have different tastes in other people, if someone doesn't like you for being a nerd then you shouldn't care for this individual's opinion.

'Nerd' has never been a particularly widely used word in the UK, 'geek' was always considered to be more or less synonymous and still remains the preferred term.  It used to be used purely as a pejorative term but was 'claimed' and seems to have lost most of the negative connotations, at least among most people under about forty years old.  The rise of pop culture and the events surrounding it such as conventions and and so on has made being a geek (or nerd) so much more 'acceptable' and many people will proudly proclaim themselves to be geeks just because they like something massively mainstream like superhero films.

Like any other subculture when the market realises that there is money to be made from them and starts throwing products at that group then the group loses any kind of fringe status that they may have enjoyed (or suffered) beforehand.

Bottom line, no, being a nerd is not a bad thing.  It may have been once, at least in the eyes of those that didn't consider themselves to be, but not any more.

I think that it's not the fact that someone is a nerd or geek. It's all about being a confident and pleasent person. Nobody really cares that much about whether you have an interest in abstract math or whether you simply love to do some light reading. Besides, ones definition of cool and being a nerd is subjective, and letting petty things such as opinions on what you are bother you, is a waste of time and can spawn unneeded insecurities

There's nothing wrong with being a nerd. With my heavy interest in astronomy, optics, electronics, etc, one could very easily call me a nerd.  :-P

Like @Phosphor said, there's nothing wrong with being a nerd. Being true to yourself is just like being proud to be a brony. We don't all have to be what society calls "cool." But that's just my opinion on being different from others.:adorkable:
