How did you find MLP Forums?

How you became a fan of My Little Pony

My best friend in high school was a huge fan of MLP, I always admired the show and the awesome fans

Hello there! So I am a student at Temple University in Philadelphia (Musical theater, but this is for a gen ed). We are researching different cultures of our choosing and I immediately jumped at the opportunity to get to know you all. I have always admired your community and I want to better understand your experiences in and out of the MLP world so I can help educate my peers.

Some questions I have:

How old were you when you first starting engaging with My Little Pony?

What aspects of the tv show do you connect to?

Does your family know you are a MLP fan?

If so, how do they respond to it?

How do people outside of your family treat you for being a MLP fan?

Have you experienced harassment (online or in person)?

What do you feel makes the MLP culture different from mainstream groups and cultures?

Thank you for anyone who takes the time to talk to me it is a massive help to me! :)

Welcome! I myself find the show appealing by how cute it is, and find it a fun show.

@TempleGuy

To answer your questions:

1. About 15 years old.

2. It's cute and fun!

3. Yes, they aren't really against it but aren't for it.

4. I haven't told anyone outside my family.

5. Not really, other than a relative around my age being a jerk about it.

6. It's not really different.

Hey!

im fairly new to the fandom, and I'm a teenager.

I really like the ideas of friendship and kindness that are at the core of the show, as I can really relate to them. Just having a place in your mind to go to where everything is nice and peaceful can really help you out when you are struggling with the difficulties life can bring. In our violent and stressful world, I think it's a much needed retreat for those of us who just want a little magic in our lives.:squee:

Honestly it's just a great way to de-stress and be happy, however difficult your real life may be. It's made me a better person, too! There are plenty of great lessons to learn and the characters are very relatable. And, of course, it's a really entertaining show!

my family does not know (hehe):P

many of my friends know I like mlp, and I take quite a bit of flak for it, but I will stick up for myself because I love the show.

I certainly have been harassed both online and in real life for liking the show. It's a shame how you get judged for liking a tv show nowadays.

Mlp is different because most people who watch the show really embody what the show is all about- friendship. I really like that about bronies.

edit: forgot to mention, there are tons of stories of people who have even come back from the brink of suicide because of MLP. It's really neat seeing how this fantastic show can cause such an impact.

edit two: grammar mistakes:)

How did you find MLP Forums?:
How you became a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: My best friend in high school was a huge fan of MLP, I always admired the show and the awesome fans

1. I was about 12ish.

2. Not much anymore. I just think it's fun and cute.

3. Yes.

4. My dad was pretty embarrassed by it. So was my mom, but she came around eventually. My brother pretends to hate it, but he often watches the show and fan videos on his own when he thinks he won't get caught.

5. I don't get treated differently very often. Any time I receive any sort of acknowledgement of it is when someone compliments my Rainbow Dash snapback or MLP t-shirt.

6. I've gotten trash talk online, but I've learned to put up with it. It's not nearly as common nowadays, anyway.

7. I guess just the whole concept. On one hand you have people saying it's weird, creepy, unnatural. On the other you have people saying it's about fun, friendship, and creativity. In reality, it's an odd mashup of both. Everywhere you have people saying it's just a fad, and any day now it will surely die. But it hasn't. Everyone expects the Brony fandom to be wildly different, and to some extent it is, but it is also like every other fandom, in the sense that it is just that: a fandom. Nothing extraordinary, just a bunch of people who like a cartoon.

I was 12 when I first started watching the show. I love to watch the show and then see all the ways people are similar to each pony. My parents do know, and I have been judged and picked on by my brother. My dad just hates and has tried to ban it. I am usually picked on at school for liking the show but I don't listen. I have experienced a lot of harassment over the internet and in real life but like I said, I don't care. Us bronies are a lot different from other fandoms because we are picked on more than any other fandom's, including furries. We're all judged by just a few bronies mistakes. It kind of sucks.

Good day.

I can speak with you directly through instant messaging or emailing if you so wish but I will go ahead and answer the basic questions here.

  1. I was eleven if I remember correctly.
  2. This question is rather loaded, I can't quite answer it fully but in a sense, I enjoy the spirit of the show. If it weren't for this show I'm afraid I wouldn't have the ability to answer your questions or anything at all if I'm being honest. From a time when my only friends had long abandoned me, my love was lost, and my psyche damaged. This show restored my passion for life and hopefully within the next year or so, I will have dedicated my life to what saved it in the first place.
  3. The only people I consider family know that I am deeply in love with this show.
  4. My mother was skeptical at first but later found that she too enjoyed it. My father (whom never loved me in the first place) was of course, bitter and hateful. Other than that, everyone else has been pretty accepting, at least to the degree that I enjoy it as a television show.
  5. Well, funnily enough, my expression of love for the show has been returned with mostly the same. Usually fathers/mothers and brothers/sisters that watch them with their kids or siblings.
  6. Of course online; I've been told to kill myself multiple times, called every name in the book, etc. As for Offline, mostly just things here and there where I'd be called gay slurs.
  7. The MLP culture...well, in a sense of it being unique, I feel that this is one true place where anyone can come for acceptance from most if not everyone else in the community. As far as I've seen, the worst arguments that break out are disagreements and occasionally some name calling, but in the end, a bit of name calling never does TOO much harm.

Hope this helps, and if you want more detail, don't be afraid to contact me.

Welcome! I'd love to help you out!

1. How old were you when you first starting engaging with My Little Pony?

I was pretty young, about 8, maybe, when I started watching MLP.

2. What aspects of the tv show do you connect to?

Most TV shows nowadays have violence, not so great morals, etc. MLP doesn't have all that. It's able to draw people in just with its genuine goodness, morals, and characters.

3. Does your family know you are a MLP fan? If so, how do they respond to it?

Yes. My mom responded fine to it. She was just happy I wasn’t watching inappropriate things for kids my age. As I grew older, however, the rest of my family started to criticize me for watching a kid’s show when I was moving onto middle school. Even my mom almost didn’t let me go to BronyCon because she thought the older male audience was there not for the show… My sister was the only one who really stayed supportive. She’s in college, and she even watches the show with me.

4. How do people outside of your family treat you for being a MLP fan?

My friends don’t criticize me for it. I’m known as the immature one of the group, so they brush it off as me being me. Although most of my friends won’t watch it themselves, they’re fine if I watch the show.

5. Have you experienced harassment (online or in person)?

A few people have reacted when I open my drawing folder to an array of ponies in school, but I haven’t gone through anything serious.

6. What do you feel makes the MLP culture different from mainstream groups and cultures?

Personally, I feel like we’re the more accepting than a lot of other communities. We accept eachother for watching a show that was originally aimed at little girls, after all! :muffins:

22. Right after Season 3.

What aspects of the tv show do you connect to?

How I could relate to The Characters and their problems

Does your family know you are a MLP fan?

Yes. My Household

If so, how do they respond to it?

They don't care as long as I don't let it interfere with my adult responsibilities.

How do people outside of your family treat you for being a MLP fan?

Most of the few people I interact with in Real Life simply say, "that's cool" like it's no big deal. That's good.

Have you experienced harassment (online or in person)?

Not directly at me. But I have stood up to those who WERE harassed online!

What do you feel makes the MLP culture different from mainstream groups and cultures?

Mostly that ,despite the Internet trolls bashing us for watching a "girls show", we keep watching for our own reasons, depending on who you ask.

My answers are in bold in your quote box.

1. Over 18 and I'll leave it at that.

2.  I like the songs, the characters, and the general message of the show.

3. Yes, my family knows I like the show.  I have had no problems at all, my mom actually buys me MLP toys.

4.  I carry a MLP lunch box for a purse.  I have not gotten any negative impact.

5. Not at all.

6. Everyone I have met is really nice and incredibly accepting.

I will gladly tell you my story how I became a bronie.

First off I remember as a child seeing the generation one MLP. At the time I was not interested in them. Just some show I saw on tv here and there. I did not return to watching the show till I was twenty eight years old. I had moved to Flagstaff AZ for schooling, there I started to work for the food provider on campus.. One of my fellow co-workers one day started talking about different anime that I have seen. She then told me I might like MLP: Friendship is Magic. Always giving things a chance before I judge, I watched maybe the first three episodes and that was it. It was decent I had to admit, but I stopped and moved on to other anime. I did not return to the show till one day a friend from church took me out for breakfast on my birthday, on the way home we were talking about different anime and cartoons and I said I watched the first three episodes. He then started to tease me for being a bronie. (He did not mean it in a hateful or hurtful way, just teasing was all.) Well I actually did not know what a bronie was, so I looked it up. After reading online about how some saw bronies and was hating on them, I got curious. "What was so bad about watching the show?" I asked myself. I then went back and watched more. And more, till I was on my second viewing.

At first I kept it to myself. Not letting anyone know I was watching them. I eventually told the co-worker that told me to watch them. She teased me a bit, but nothing bad. Mostly just playing with me. She then told me I should join this forum, so I did. Made two OCs so far. Nightmare Season my Ponysona, and Peony Spring for fun.

As far as my family knowing, only my two siblings. Dad dose not know. Mom is dead. My siblings both seem iffy with me liking the show. Though they do not say much about it at all. When it comes to my friends. I have very few, but I did choose them wisely. They kid with me from time to time about it, but nothing hateful or hurtful. As for others, I do not talked to anyone else much for them to know really.

As far as harassment goes, I do not see any. Though, I tend to keep to my self mostly.

What aspects drew me to the show? Well, a few things. First off, most cartoons I refuse to watch usually has crude or obscene jokes all through out the show. I hate that kind of humor. MLP has none of that. Good clean jokes, some even for adults. But nothing that makes me regret watching. Also the stories that are told. Great moral and life guidance stuff. It has meaning behind it. Unlike some popular cartoons were the only thing it has is how stupid everyone acts for laughs. Also, the characters just seem real. Each one feels like people you would come across. Hated when they tried to fix poor Derpy. I know two people just like Derpy. Happy she came back. Also another thing I really enjoy about the story, some villains actually became good after. I once was thought of in a poor light. By students, and my own family. Several even told me I was just bad. It is good to see a show that says, "Hey, not all people are actually as they seem. Sometimes they just need a helping hand to be on the right path." Though I actually never did anything bad, my family just saw me that way.

I use to like Unicorn Twilight Sparkles. She was much like me almost. I connected with her. After she became an Alicorn, she changed to much. My favorite now is Rarity.

How is MLP fandom different from the rest? Well, first off, it was made to target little girls. So it seems odd that adults, especially adult males, like the show. So several people think it is weird or there is something wrong with the person who likes it. I know at first I was trying to keep it hidden that I had turned into a bronie. But latter I did not care. More shows now a days needs to have the strong morals that this show teaches. So many now a days only show stupidity or stuff that would get us arrested if attempted to copy. Yet that is what is popular I hate to say. Though I refuse to watch them. Also, if you look at other things and fans. The intended target audiences are not always the ones that become fans. For example; I like pokemon. Been playing pokemon since generation one. Bought my copy the second day it hit the shelf. Back then I was the targeted audience. Though I still am a fan. That is fine because the ones I see waiting in line for the current releases are adults and young adults. Very few kids any more buying pokemon. Instead I see all the eight and nine year olds in the store having their parents buy Call of Duty. That has mature graphics. So not all things hits what is intended to target. My Little Pony has actually hit all of the ages to some degree. It is not huge like other things are, but still has a decent amount to support them making more seasons.

Bonus: A fun fact about why I love the show. Growing up in a trouble house hold and being the target of bullies through out grade school and junior high. I developed severe depression. Was on and off medication and in and out of hospitals for years. Nothing was working to lessen it. Medication only made it worse.  And yes I was very bad off and thought of ending my life on a daily basis. I never killed myself because I made a promise not to. I was always loosing jobs because of it. Almost lost my current job too. I lived with the depression for fifteen years. But I started to watch the show every evening after work before I went to bed. After a while, I had started to laugh at some things from the show. I never really laughed in years. Watched more and a smile was finally seen on my lips after ten years. About mid way through my third watching of the show, I had realized my depression was cured. These happy-go-lucky pastel ponies had made me happy after fifteen years. Medicine and hospitals all failed or made it worse. But this show somehow did what doctors could not. So I now am open to telling others that I am a bronie. I cured me, so what is wrong with watching it.

You are welcome to send me a PM if you want to hear more.

01) I'm 38 now. I watched some of the earlier incarnations when I was little, but started watching the current show when I was 31.

02) I like the themes of friendship and teamwork that are central to the show. It also has some wonderful writing, and some of the best songs on any animated show on TV.

03) I'm an adult. My family knows I watch anime, as well as some domestic cartoons. You may have noticed my avatar is Kim Possible. I LOVE that show. Also, the new Duck Tales is wonderful. My family, and yes, husband, think it's cute that I never outgrew cartoons.

04) They don't really care what I watch. I don't try to shove my hobby down their throats. My husband does watch MLP, and some other anime with me.

05) People outside the family don't generally know. I don't run around telling people what I watch on TV much.

05) As a female and adult fan, I'm lucky and have no experience with real life harassment. As a writer of questionable fanfics, I actually received an online death threat. No details, and it was not on this site. The matter has since been resolved.

06) I think the main difference (Or mane, as fans like to spell it) is that the fans try hard to stick to the message of cooperation and friendship. For the most part (save for some literary critics) this is a very open and easy going fandom.

How did you find MLP Forums?:
How you became a fan of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic: My best friend in high school was a huge fan of MLP, I always admired the show and the awesome fans

Whether or not you stay on this forum, or you just use it for this poll, I bid you welcome, and hope you enjoy your time here!

In regards to your questions:

-I first started getting seriously into the show when I was 15

-I strongly connect to all the lessons in the show. I was going through some stuff, and the show and some of the lessons actually helped me get through it. The songs are actually done really well; there are some really memorable.

-I believe that my family knows about it, but they never really bring it up.

-I brought it up once, and they seemed really chill about it.

-Honestly, not many outside of my immediate family knows about my liking of the show. The friends that do know seem supportive, but again, I don't bring it up often.

-I have yet to experience harassment about MLP ever.

-MLP is a special fandom, and bronies are special. Despite the hate that a lot of people give them, I find that bronies always find a way to stay positive. From what I've seen, bronies also are always accepting and kind towards one another. Despite the many different opinions on aspects of the show, there's never any really real fighting. Seven years have passed since the magic of friendship was created, and we've had several movies, seven seasons (with more on the way), lots of websites and forums, and tons of fan fiction being created everyday! Not many shows are able to do that. The show really tries hard to convey the idea of friendship, and lessons that we can learn from it (and succeeds in doing so). I will forever be a brony.

Welcome to MLP Forums, TempleGuy!

  1. I was 16 years old when I first started interacting with MLP and its fandom back in 2014
  2. I enjoy the characters and animation, and I think that the show is very well written
  3. Yep.
  4. I was afraid to admit it, but, in a big plot twist in my life, it turns out they don't actually mind me being a Brony.
  5. People outside of my family are also pretty cool with me being a Brony, I've even encouraged my best friend to watch some epsiodes
  6. I have experienced some harassment, but, mainly online HOWEVER, it was very small, and pretty harmless looking back, hasn't happened in a while
  7. I feel that the Brony fandom is very accepting of others no matter who they are or where they are from.

I hope that answered your questions.

I'm totally open to respond to any additional questions that you may have, but for now I'll address the ones you have asked already!

How old were you when you first starting engaging with My Little Pony?

I was just a little girl when I first started enjoying MLP. It wasn't just the new show that got me into the series! So, I'd say maybe 5 years old?

What aspects of the tv show do you connect to?

The varied cast of characters and how they all have their own trials. Many expect the show to be very one dimensional and happy go lucky all of the time. While it is a very happy show, it doesn't shy away from genuine trials that every character experiences differently. I also enjoy that it doesn't center around just ONE character. Many episodes focus on others besides the mane 6!

Does your family know you are a MLP fan?

No, my family does not know that I am a MLP fan. I imagine they would think it's weird for a 22 year old woman to still love My Little Pony.

If so, how do they respond to it?

N/A

How do people outside of your family treat you for being a MLP fan?

Most of my friends don't know, as I am honestly too embarrassed to tell them. Many of my friends mock the fandom, though I do have a handful of friends who enjoy the show secretly with me as well.

Have you experienced harassment (online or in person)?

Not directly towards me no, but I have been in a Skype call while my group of friends belittles the fandom or someone we don't know for liking the show.

What do you feel makes the MLP culture different from mainstream groups and cultures?

I think we're an overwhelmingly positive and friendly group. We believe in being good to one another and really take the values of the show to heart.

Thanks for asking!

- How old were you when you first starting engaging with My Little Pony?

Gee, hard to say but probably when I was around 13.

- What aspects of the tv show do you connect to?

The innocence, references, etc. I dunno, it's just a fun show with fun characters!

- Does your family know you are a MLP fan?

Yes.

- If so, how do they respond to it?

Parents are like, "Whuu? ok. Whatever." Siblings have come to love it with me.

- How do people outside of your family treat you for being a MLP fan?

Well, no one outside knows that I am a fan, but I doubt it would really affect much in my life.

- Have you experienced harassment (online or in person)?

In general or from being a fan? Not really and no.

- What do you feel makes the MLP culture different from mainstream groups and cultures?

The biggest difference is that we are the "wrong" audience - other games and shows have fan bases that are exactly what they expected. I doubt anyone really expected that anyone besides young girls would watch MLP back in 2000's.

How old were you when you first starting engaging with My Little Pony? 20

What aspects of the tv show do you connect to? The cheerful mood of the show and how super unique it is

Does your family know you are a MLP fan? It's blatant

If so, how do they respond to it? Told me to grow up, then stopped caring

How do people outside of your family treat you for being a MLP fan? I'm hated by 10,000s

Have you experienced harassment (online or in person)? Greatly online

What do you feel makes the MLP culture different from mainstream groups and cultures?I don't interact with the fandom much. I just enjoy the show and only peek at this stuff sometimes
