I'm not sure...but I think sand could hold memories for the ponies who walked on it. 

I remember a time when my friends and I went to the beach to look for seashells for one of Rarity's dresses, it was a surprisingly cold summer day

and I remember Rainbow Dash tripped and fell face first into a sand dune.
