Cocaine psychosis from what I've heard. Basically means that the farmer was so utterly zoned out that he didn't even feel the shots until it was a tad too late. Plus, when you're high you can see all sorts of crazy things so, in his mind, he may have been nomming on an ice cream rather then a human.
