Once while it was shown on the CMC Clubhouse Streaming section of this site and it was after I Saw the Nostalgia Critic's editorial on it years ago!

while I'm not as obsessed with Batman as I am with Disney, I have to admit it's pretty good! Thumbs up

I wouldn't give it a score, to be honest. I've watched it and I remember it was actually good. But it's hard for a batman the animated series movie to be bad. The whole show was perfect on itself. Great animation, stylization, plots, voice acting and even an amazing musical score. In general I would recommend this and the movie with Mr. Freeze.

Who is cult enough to have seen this movie and if you have, what are your thoughts, critic on it and score?

  1. I have!
  2. "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" is a really good movie but it isn't my favorite Batman movie.
  3. I really enjoyed seeing a new part of Batman's origin story & I thought the Phantasm design was cool. Also, The Joker was AWESOME!
  4. I would score Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" a 10/10!

It's been a very, very long time since I saw this movie, but as a general rule, everything related to Batman TAS is excellent.

And I must say I don't see why you'd compare TAS to the Dark Knight or Joker, even if you do think the last two are cinematic masterpieces - I don't really get the hype, myself - they're very different beasts.

Cult enough?  When did this become "cult"?  This was just how animation was done, back in the day.

I was sixteen when Mask of the Phantasm premiered; Batman the Animated Series was THE cartoon on TV, and nobody even doubted for a minute that this movie was going to be incredible.  When it hit the silver screen, though... there was a rather mixed opinion of it within the fanbase: some thought it to be the ultimate masterpiece of the series... while others found it to be too heavy-handed and muddled.  More to the point, because it was a movie, it was a bit rougher than the series, but ONLY a bit.  In the day and age of it, there was room for it to go SO wrong, and some thought it had.

I was in the camp that thought they did a pretty decent job of it.

The movie itself sort of plays out like a long version of a BtAS episode.  The plot was a bit thicker than normal (because they needed more than thirty minutes worth of it), and the addition of The Phantasm felt a bit... forced.  As if they were pushing the character out in front (and, with marketing bugging them to make a new figure, they kinda were).  The hype around the film died off almost immediately after it was in theatres, which was weird - it was like, "hey, come see this GREAT NEW MOVIE!  BRING THE KIDS!  HAVE A GREAT TI- okay, it's out, enough, later y'all."  Box office bombed with this one... but when it came out on home video?  *explosion noises*

From what I remember (which can be described as a 'memory shotgun blast', at times), it was fairly decent.  The new character only showed up for the movie (kinda like a certain purple unicorn with a broken horn), and it felt heavy-handed in its' delivery because of the same said character (they just about brow-beat you with who The Phantasm was; those who hadn't figured it out by the reveal were probably infants).  That being said, it was a perfect way to top off the series, and it was a wonderful, rollicking tour de force of what made the series so great.

To critique it?  Well, I'd give it a solid 8/10, honestly.

It was a good movie, with top-notch vocal performances and the same animation the series had been known for - a solid presentation from Warner Brothers.  However, that said, it doesn't get 10 out of 10 because... well, it really only stands out from the series due to the length, and the Phantasm character; otherwise, it's just another episode of the show... and a movie shouldn't just be another episode (see: Firefly vs. Serenity).  The plot was good (though copied from another Batman comic, but with a different villain), and the movie itself was a decent showing - I just felt they could have done just a smidge more with it.

... "cult"?  Seriously?

Actually, I haven't. But even then, I'm really not so sure about the high praise some of the people here are giving it considering the existence of the Dark Knight and if you want to be technical, 2019's Joker.

It's up there with The Dark Knight (if not better) and definitely better than Joker.

Like, Todd Phillips isn't even close to being on the same level as Bruce Timm and Paul Dini.

I have not seen anything related to The Animated Series. I don't know where to start, or if I am interested enough to begin watching such an iconic but old series.

Start with just about any episode.

YES cult, and I appreciate the full critique here, honest opinion, solid arguments, not backing out on pointing the bad things this movie had some of them. Then again, while it might have had a Mixed reaction from the fanbase, this movie in base has done what the dark knight did when it came out.
