As a back up plan to make sure her friends don't die due to mortality. While they are turned to stone she can figure out a way to make them immortal since they won't age as stone. Perhaps even by turning them all into alicorns somehow.

And let's say her friends have consented to be turned into stone.

I mean if her friends consented to it I don’t see why not.

If Twilight is immortal then she would have all the time in the world to figure it out and her friends wouldn’t know a difference in the meantime until she figures it out and unstones them.

"Magic Duel" pretty much states that age manipulation spells are possible, just requiring an extremely rare level of magical talent. So the solution to immortality is likely already there.

Hell, for all we know any pony with a moderate to severe case of old could just head on over to Canterlot and get cured - all the old farts we see on camera are just those who've chosen to let nature take its course.

Hmm.  Doesn't seem right to me.  I mean, I know her friends consented in this hypothetical, but I still don't like it for some reason.  An affront to the natural order of things, I guess.  But then again, I'm also a big proponent of improving every possible facet of humanity and the world at large through technology, including tinkering with our genes.  So, I guess I'm a bit of hypocrite.    I also believe that alicorns are not immortal, just very, very long-lived.  I also have a firm position that immortality would be a terrible curse.

Why??? There’s absolutely no reason for it. If it’s because of the immortality thing, blame the finale for not thinking anything through

No, because Discord stated that he was fully aware while petrified. It's probable that Celestia was unaware of this 'glitch' when she did it to Discord, but Twilight should be aware of it now and refuse to use it as a preservation method.

Of course that might be because... well... Discord. But without un-petrifying Cozy, Tirek, and Chrysalis to confirm it, you have to assume this is the reason it's a penal process, not a preservation one.

I don't know if they would survive that. Discord survived being stone for a thousand years, but he's immortal anyway. A normal, mortal pony might just end up dead.

But then again, Twilight did survive being temporarily petrified by a cockatrice

In any case, Discord implies that he was conscious while he was a statue. To an immortal being, a thousand years is probably nothing. A mortal would go completely insane, even if they did survive.

Friendship isn't always easy. But it's definitely worth fighting for.

Somehow or another, she’ll make her friends immortal. :adorkable: I think we all know them well enough to know that there is no way that Twilight, especially with her new magic, would just sit there and let her friends die. :(
As nice as it was, I like to think that the epilogue from the last episode isn’t canon. :mlp_icwudt: They’ll all stay the same age forever! :D

But it would be selfish for her to pick only her friends.

I know but if Twilight’s immortal, there’s no reason why her friends shouldn’t be too! :dash: If I was any background pony, I’d understand why completely. :coco:

No.  Even assuming that Twilight is immortal, which the show never really made all the clear, this isn't something she should do.  In fact this isn't even something she would do in the first place.

Well, Discord did un-petrify himself when the Cutie Mark Crusaders were fighting in front of him. So it's not unreasonable to assume that the magic might have affected him differently than it would a plain old pony.

Um...no. In A Rockhoof and a Hard Place, Rockhoof wanting to be turned to stone was his way of wanting to give up on life. So even if it made them "immortal" it wouldn't be living. As much as I dislike that implication of the finale, there's no proof that Twilight will never die. It's fully possible for her to pass on her "immortality" to Luster Dawn like Celestia did to her, another implication of the finale with Celestia not being present.

The idea there wouldn't be to leave them stoned for all eternity like Rockhoof wanted - rather, to keep them from dying and decomposing until a cure for old age can be developed. Like cryonics, only the solution for reviving the patient is already there.

Is each of them's decision, not Twilight's.

Remember that they would be conscious the whole time without the chance to tell someone if they want to follow through with it 2 or 10 or 300y later or not. There's no bell on that grave. And if they would like to be immortal I think they would first ask Twilight if they can be an alicorn or use the age spell or something but I think that would also be cheap, the whole I'm gonna escape death thing.

I would guess twilight already decided that she's going to "go" with her friends regardless because at the time we see the Last Problem she's preparing a specific student of her own like Celestia did with her, so that could mean that Twilight's reign is going to be way shorter that Celestia's, and then she'll retire and whatever happens to alicorns when they retire will happen, I just assume they either die or disappear or ascend to the heavens and become a star, idfk...

No, I really don't think she should. The fact is, death is a part of life. Just cause Twilight is able to use her overpowered alicorness to cheat it, doesn't mean her friends should. They way I see it, is that they lived their lives to the fullest; in other words, they lived their destinies. Each played a major role in saving Equestria, and I'd say they all have quite the legacy. Plus, that kind of immortality seems more unpleasant than anything. So no, Twilight shouldn't turn her friends into stone for immortality.

Alicorn aging doesn't make any sense but I'm not convinced Twilight or the other alicorns are immortal. And if they are and they start making other ponies immortal then they'll want OTHER ponies to be immortal and the whole thing will snowball fast.

*Agrees*

The finale really forced us to see the thing we all feared :worry:

Twilight isn't the one to put her friends into stones, and probably would put her enemies into stones as well. I think she will be fine all alone when everypony else passed away, since she has so many books to read!
