Work Stories

(Did a quick search, didn't find a thread like this, if so, sowwy)

Fun story happened to me today at work....

(I work at a sports bar/restaurant)

So here I am just cleaning up a table with a bunch of plates and cups in my arms, and this lady asks me "Excuse me, can you get our waitress?"

and I say "Sure, can you remember her name?" (They say "Hi my name is ____ I'll be taking care of you" and repeat it again at the end of greeting)

and then she gives me this death look like I insulted her and her family and she said "*Huff* Uhh excuse me....? No, why the hell would I (heavily emphasized) need to know something like that, thats your job, now go find her, *whispered* I swear kids dont know any respect these days"

I told her "My apologies, I'll go find her..." Turns out she asks everyone that walks past her table including my manager within like 30 seconds where I had to put all these dishes away. She complained to my manager about being rude and lazy too (which he knew she was over exaggerating)

So do you have any odd/funny work related stories? I have a ton I could post, and I'll post a few here and there when I remember them/am not awake at 1:15AM.

Yea, I have a couple, but I'll only share one.

Once upon a time, a white feller (me) worked in a sweatshop called China Wok. Now there wasn't much of a language barrier since my boss can speak "engrish." However, you can misunderstand him sometimes, and sometimes he won't understand you a 100% of the time. Anyways, had a customer come in and order food and he knew my boss. Then the guy who ordered said hello to my boss and he said the same, and asked how he was. The guy who ordered the food said well I recently got in a car crash. My boss misunderstood him and said, "GOOD, GOOD!", while being in the kitchen, and I stood at the register with his food. I concealed my laughter, but sort of snickered. I appologized to the guy who ordered food, but he knew he misunderstood so it was all cool, but hell that was funny when it happened.

The delivery driver got "pantsed" after he came back from a run. The Chinese chefs we have are fun like that.

Or another time, this girl dropped a whole order or Crab Rangoons, I laughed so hard.

I'm not entirely sure how lively this will be considering the majority of active members here are in high school/college, many of which will not be employed, but let's see where this goes.

I haven't seen any thread for this sort of thing while searching, so this may be the first one.  So let's share the funniest things you've had happen to you while at work.

I'll start with two of my favorites so far.

A bit of background here: I work in the engineering office of a machine shop as a drafter.  It sounds professional, but trust me, it really isn't.  It may be at other offices, but it sure as hell isn't where I work.

My favorite so far happened back in September last year when one of the people at our German branch came over here to get some training in design and quoting.  My shift leader was showing him something when out of nowhere a lady comes in holding up a card and and mumbling.  Everyone in the office just sat there because no one had any idea what she was even saying. Eventually, she just walked out.  My shift leader turned to the German guy and said, "and that, Lars, was a crackhead."

(It wasn't much of a joke, either.  I've had drug addicts ask me, my coworkers, and the people who work at the dollar store across the street for money.)

More recently, I had been in touch with a sales rep in Russia about a print a customer had signed that may have been an earlier version that was made with incorrect information.  I got an email back from him, but something was off.  Normally, his English was fairly good, but this had some noticeable spelling and grammar errors. At first I was wondering what was going on, then I checked the world clock on my phone for the time zone around Moscow. It was 7:30PM when he sent it (it may have been later if he was farther east).  That's when I started to put the pieces together.

1. Email filled with poor spelling and grammar

2. It's Friday night

3. He's Russian

This dude was drunk.

(In fairness, I probably would have done the same thing in his place. Actually last Friday, I did, but I wasn't doing anything in relation to work.)

Well, when I was in High-School, I worked a weekend job at a convience-store/truck-stop.

It was my second weekend working there, and I was working the graveyard.

It was 1:30 in the morning, and I hadn't had a customer in hours.

Then, out of nowhere, this random trucker, who i didn't hear pull in, opened the door.

It startled me so much that I screamed. Not only did I scream, but I also sneezed so hard that I hit my head on the cash-register, causing it to open.

The guy was obviously very tired, and just gave a long and blank stare and we didn't say anything for a good minute.

The trucker then left without buying anything.

A customer walks up to me and asks for a couple of ice cubes in his drink. I so obliged and hand him his drink back while I was laughing a bit.... he asks me what did I do to his drink, and I said "you asked for a couple of ice cubes and I only put in one"

but in all seriousness I have no work stories yet I'm getting a job very soon

Heh, well I got one from yesterday.

Though less about work itself and more about just trying to get there.

My workplace is like less than five minutes from my house, right on the corner of this intersection down the street. But you have to go over some train tracks to get there. So I was supposed to come in at 1pm, and I pull up to the tracks at 12:50 when they start blinking. And I'm like, "That's okay, it's probably just the metro. It's fast."

Turns out that wasn't what it was. The gates were malfunctioning or something. And so it's 1:00pm and I'm, "Fudge, I'm already late and I don't know how long it's going to keep doing this! Guess I'll go a back way..."

So I do, but of course the gates are fixed by the time I get back. XP

My boss was understanding though.

Oh yeah. I'm a night shift manager in a Pizzeria. I got plenty.

This one time, a guy high as a kite calls in while needing to munch on something with his friends at 1 AM. I ask him for his phone number and name - not a problem. I ask for his address and he starts fidgeting and says "Wait a moment... i'm too high, lemme recall...", at which point i ask him "Um, can't you remember where you live?" And he's like "Sure, i just don't remember the street's name... or the building's number..." and i ended up having to wait 2 minutes while he remembers these details (It's fine because work was dead anyway, so i might as well get another delivery made before i close up shop, i figured). I claimed i would need him to pay in credit, not in cash because i didn't trust him. Turns out these were 3 fellows just high as heck bunking together and watching movies all night, and they were pretty fine (maybe too fine, except they were hungry) and tipped the delivery person very handsomely.

  • 1 month later...

I volunteer at a library and I do a wide range of things. One of the things I do is some basic security work, like checking the building for problems, whether it's people, sharp objects, hazardous materials, unlocked doors that should be locked, or anything really. I remember one day I was doing a sweep of the children's area and there were a ton of dead bugs on a windowsill. That was fun cleaning up.

Another time I was doing a sweep of the young adult area and I spent like 30 minutes just cleaning these special chairs we have in there. Kids shove all sorts of shit in there, it's ridiculous.

Thankfully I've never found anything too crazy. I've found some unidentified powders before but the likelihood of it being drugs or anything like that is pretty low due to the demographics surrounding the library and its patrons. The craziest thing I've found was an empty cigarette box.

I'm glad to do this work, though. I honestly feel like it's one of the only important, helpful, and meaningful things I do with my life. It's not a paying job but that doesn't matter to me because it helps people.

I do need money though, so I've applied for a few jobs and will be applying for more soon.
