Protip to all who want to experiment with Linux: don't type the above command in a terminal. You're gonna have a bad time.

You naughty boy.

Yep, a bad joke on my part. But raises an important point for potential *NIX wannabes: know the difference between # rm -rf /* and # rm -rf ./*

Also, don't run any commands you're unsure about when you see that # at the prompt. In fact, use a separate user account for questionable stuff.

Why would they not let you buy a PC? A mac is 4 times more expensive and not as good. What is up with your parents?

1. My parents are die hard applefans and most of the stuff they buy is from apple

2. When I said I wanted a PC they tried "lecturing" me on why mac is better

3. They freak out im gonna get a virus and all that

I dont really mind using a Mac though, but in the future I will try and make my own gaming pc :P I know some friends who can help me out

Going to beat a dead horse here... huh, just occurred to me that this is the wrong site to say that on.

But Macs are actually more susceptible to viruses, thing is, back in the old days, few people had Macs, so it wasn't really worth coding a virus for.

Now a days but Macs and viruses for them are on the rise. Windows machines are also very virus resistant if you take the right precautions. I've had a Windows machine for nearly ten years and have never caught a virus. Simply don't download something on every single site that has a download button.

Also don't go to every single site, stay away from scams and "watch movies for free" sites.

A virus scanner never hurts of course but mine never finds anything.

Of course I'm also a wee bit biased against Macs. Windows may be a pain in the arse but at least it does what I tell it to do. With a Mac I feel like I have to bait it into doing what I want.

I wish everything just worked on Linux.

Macs are nice OS and they don't get viruses as easily as windows, but don't play games like as well as windows.

That's a common misconception about Mac. In truth, they're just as susceptible to viruses as Windows is, it's just that no one bothered to make viruses for Mac. The reason was that Mac was a lot less popular than Windows. Now, though, as Mac gets more and more popular, people have started developing viruses for the OS.

Chances are you didn't download anything, or actually bother doing EVERY SINGLE STEP, because you can get through most of it unharmed, (Speaking from experience there).

And it's a lot harder to contract a virus than a lot of people think, something to worry about, but not be scared of. Similar to how you worry about crashing in your car but you're not scared enough to never drive your car.

So I'm not all that surprised you didn't catch one, while it's more susceptible to Mac programed viruses, (You can check me on Google if you like, search for, oh I dunno, "how easy is it to get a virus on a Mac" you should get results that'll back me up. Never just take someone's word for it, even mine. And mine's usually pretty good, after all, I only gamble when I can never lose.) viruses in the first place are hard to get if you have any form of common sense, (You ever get those windows that pop up and say they are scanning your hard drive for viruses? And you know they are just a simply flash video for several reasons that are easy to spot? Exactly.)

Plus, I'm not sure on the numbers, but while Macs are increasing in their popularity and use, Windows still corners the market. Guess which I'd develop a virus for?

Last little bit here, there were a couple of massive viruses that hit Macs a few years back, exploiting the easy-to-breach security. So it's also possible Apple may have really stepped up in their security department.

I must admit, OSx being my least favorite operating system for many reasons, I hardly keep up with it.

Now, though, as Mac gets more and more popular, people have started developing viruses for the OS.

And more games too!

Though more importantly, Linux has been on the rise as well! AND STEAM IS COMING TO LINUX WITH L4D2! YAYZ! Wasteland 2 is also coming to Linux, presumably on Steam as well I hope. Lots of games are beginning to be made for Linux now that I think about it.

Yeah, I too have never come across an OS X virus, however I am aware that they exist so I'm not about to begin ignorantly proclaiming "macs don't get viruses!".

Personally, I use all three (Windows, OS X, Linux) as each OS has their own niche in which they excel in. I'm sure any gamer will tell you that Windows beats any other OS hands down when it comes to game compatibility. The (relatively) recent support of the Mac platform by Steam is improving things for the Apple camp, but it will be still a good period of time before the library of games that are supported on the Mac becomes anything worth talking about.

Personally, I use a Mac for most of my work as it is an inherently elegant system that combines a POSIX-compliant UNIX backend with a beautiful GUI frontend. Many development utilities that run on Linux will run natively on OS X, and with package managers such as MacPorts, missing dependencies can be easily resolved. There are also lots of great productivity apps on the Mac that one would be hard-pressed to find an alternative for on Windows.

My home server/NAS runs Ubuntu Server as my previous experience as a sysadmin for my school has shown UNIX/UNIX-based systems to be rock solid stable and relatively difficult to penetrate when iptables is configured correctly. Back in the day, we had servers running Mandriva Linux (then called Mandrake) with uptimes in excess of 700 days! Of course, there's still a whole lot that I don't know about when it comes to the ins-and-outs of UNIX-base systems, but then again that's why we keep learning. :)

And this is why one computer is never enough for me :P

Signature to come soon. I think. Yeah. Once I think up a nice one. Or when someone makes one for me. Damn it. I need more time to draw and animate poni. >_<

Your still running 98?

Does it creak when you boot it up? O.o

In all honesty though, kudos for being able to stick with 98, anything less than vista and i get frustrated.

By the way, you Linux users, what is good about it that makes you use it rather than Windows or Mac?

Well, I haven't gotten to use it extensively yet, as I'm still building my second computer. However, several things come to mind, first off, it's a very lightweight and stable OS. I can boot it off of my USB and carry my hard drive in my pocket. There are issues with plugging it into a different PC of course, but it's far easier to do with Linux than Windows or Mac. Second off, in my time playing around with it, it's never stopped me. Not once, I wanted to run a program or file there was no security warning. Nothing I had to disable or enable. I had instant easy access to the console and critical system files, and I can fool around with it as much I please.

It's open source too, which not only means it's free, and that I can create any customization I want to it, but other people can create their own version of Linux and put it on the internet for others. That's why, unlike Linux or Mac, you hear about many more types of that operating system.

Plus, I just like how it feels when I do things in it. It just FEELS right and while it's hard to put that into words but that is very critical to any consumer device or software. (Ever not really liked a shooter game because somehow the guns just didn't FEEL right? Exactly.)

Linux is geared towards people who are called "power-users" and know their way around computers really well. Not towards people who just want to check their e-mail for their jobs and type up a progress report. So I suppose your average person should probably use Windows or Mac instead.

In short, I like Linux the most for the same reasons I like Windows better than Mac, just, tenfold in Linux's case.

Looks like your parents are true hipsters. What do they commonly wear anyway? Purple hoodies? Rayban sunglasses? Skinny jeans? I would laugh so hard if that was true.

Windows all the way. mac is okay but i know how windows is set up more so it is easier to locate things. with mac it just seems like a mess to me and also I play PC games so that is another reason i prefer windows.

I used windows since w95, but after very bad experience with windows 7 (absolutely differend configuration, unrepairable java, viruses and the last and worst one... I used windows partitioning tool and had a lot of work to repair it :/) I switched to Linux. It is much easier to develop applications in Linux and everything I need can be done there. Thanks to wine I can play some older games and run ePSXe which is even faster in Linux than in w7. I also like package manager where you can download and install application/game/library with just one command in terminal (or using GUI) etc. But on the other hand it is quite difficult to configure, so you have to ask on forums a lot.

Edit: I tried almost all main linux distros, and now I am using lubuntu.

I prefer Mac over anything else because of how smoothly it runs but I mostly use Windows because Macs can't run as many type of programs as Windows and Macs aren't as customizable as PC computers. PC computers tend to freeze a lot and crash though.

Ah, the misconception of the misconception.

It seems pretty plausible, that the only reason Macs didn't get viruses was because of their miniscule marketshare. But you would think someone would try and be "the first" to create a widespread virus for Macs, just because of the attention it would bring to them, right?

Here's the truth, guys. (And trust me, I am an ex-Apple fan; I'm not biased here, at least not anymore.) It's ridiculously hard to write a true virus for OS X. Why? It has its roots in the Unix architecture (common ancestry shared with Linux) which is damn near rock solid as far as security goes. Almost nothing runs in the root level, making it much more difficult for viruses to insert themselves. It can be done, but the effort it takes is just not worth the time unless you're that obsessed.

BTW, a lot of people refer to trojans as viruses. These are the kind of malicious programs that require an input from the user. (Like the aforementioned "Free movies" deal.) Things that you download yourself, or allow access to your machine are not viruses. A virus is something that simply takes control without any input on your part. In this respect, Macs can be vulnerable and there are several trojans out there that do exist for the OS.

But viruses? They're just too much of a pain to create to have any worry about.

1. Runs on just about any architecture(machine type) and not just x86.

2. It Doesn't Cost Anything :P

3. It generally has a lighter footprint (less system resources are needed).

4. Extremely Customizable and Powerful.

5. Since it has a lighter footprint versions of it can be ran on older computers not supported well by Microsoft or Apple anymore.

6. It's Free and Open Source Software, we can use Linux however we please and we can distribute it how we want as well.

7. It's Mascot is a Penguin :P

9. I am not much of a developer but i have been told that Linux is popular for ease of doing Development.

10. IMO since it's so customizable its a lot of fun making your desktop look exactly how you want :)

11. Linux doesn't install and change anything without my knowledge.

^^^^ What he said

Also, Linux is great because there are so many distributions to choose from, and you can pick whatever you fancy. :)

Like, I use Fedora, and I think Superponylinux uses Arch. There are a LOT more :P basically, whatever you'll be using your computer for, there is a distro that will help you :)

I'm on a mac, and they are wonderful machines, free repairs for the life of the machine at any apple store, and they really are great for "Creative" types, I personally use Imovie a lot. However I do miss having a windows computer mostly for the gaming aspect. After college I want to build my own PC and I'll definitely use windows on that.

I'm a Mac person. I own an iPad, iPhone, and I have a MacBook Pro as well as an iMac. I'm more into the artsy things and feel that it is very user friendly. I will use windows if I have to, but I get bored easily. I am very interested in getting a Linux computer though. Mainly because I've never used, much less seen, a computer with that software.
