music Musical Misconceptions/Stereotypes That Bother You

Wait, people actually say stuff like that? I didn't know that exists.

Also, here's something that's been bothering me, don't think I've said it before:

"I like all music except country and rap"

:|

Oh yeah, people say stuff like that. If it ain't famous, then it can't be good because if it was good, it'd be famous! Right?

Oh and I hate that too. Why does everybody who claims to like all music also have a hatred for country and rap?

I tend to take the high road, get stoned, and fly low . . .

People usually assume I am a junkie when i mention that I like metal music. However I also like dubstep, techno, dance, trance, and classical music plus I'm a fairly spiffy well-dressed person. So it drives me insane when people insist that I have bad hygiene or aren't intelligent merely because I enjoy Metal.

Top 10 Most Annoying Stereotypes

10: Liking Justin Bieber or Rebecca Black makes you gay

9: Dubstep isn't music

8: Brony is a synonym for Furry

7: Gay is a synonym for stupid

6. All Bronies jerk off to Ponies

5: Brony is a synonym for Furry

4: Opinions can be wrong

3: All Americans are Fat Lazy No-Lifes

2: If you prefer anything besides the Xbox, you're gay

1: Your performance in a video game determines if you succeed in life.

I should make a top 100 List. This list just does not do justice.

"I listen to x to everything else is total crap" - Ever heard of a thing called personal preference?

"Electronic music takes absolutely no skill to create" - So how come you arent a famous, popular multi billionare, and they are?

"You're a metalhead, so that means you only listen to metal" - A large portion of metalheads also loves rock and/or electronic.

"You're a metalhead, so that means you are filthy, stupid, irrational, satanic, unemployed drug addict" - Nobody ever told me this directly, but i notice it in their behaviour towards me.

I remember a few years back i was sitting on a bench with a buddy, and an old lady (like 80 years old) with a small child (maybe 2-3 years old) was walking by. She stopped next to us (litteraly 3 feet from us), crouched down next to the kid, pointed a finger right at us, and said "See, these are metalheads. Never hang out with these.", and just walked off. If she wasnt 80, i swear i would've punched her...

It bothers me how when people sing anything, they think they can make it sound better by just flourishing everything.

So someone was going "So c-AAAA-l me maaaaaaaybeeeeee" like it was some sort of love song.

"Metal music's lyrics have no meaning, they are just screams."

My answer: "How stubborn are those scars when they won't fade away? Or just a gentle reminder that now are better days."

- Asking Alexandria (A Prophecy)

A little bit more meaningful than "Baby baby baby wooah!" Don't you think?

I'm just saying that using something like FL Studios to make good stuff takes a different skill set than using a guitar, trumpet, piano, etc to make good stuff.

i know that. it does take a whole lot of different skill and understanding to produce electronic music. you have to not only have some form of musical experience, so you know what you want to do and what sounds like what, but you also have to have some form of understanding in sound-design and how things work, tweak with little knobs so all the channels don't drown out each other, panning tracks so not everything plays in the middle etc.

and then i haven't talked about how hard it can be to create a personal kind of sound and produce synths and drumbeats of your own. i don't even know how to do that, yet.

This is one of the worst and I'm surprised I didn't jump on it earlier.

I mean, what is this:

Compared to this?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXTy3Vm2Jss

Sit across from you, why are we even here?

There is no way to make up for the 20 years.

I love trying to make conversation when I could careless of what you're

doing,

what are you doing? And I know you never cared 'till now.

All my days go back to when you would scream.

And it froze me.

Guess the screaming runs in the family.

You look tired and run-down. Are you even excited to see your baby boy?

Put a razor to the skin 'till we don't resemble each other anymore.

Sit across from you, why are we even here?

There is no way to make up for the 20 years.

So now I see the tears welling up, finally you care I've waited all my life

for this.

It's always been over, it's always been over, it's always been over for us.

A single tear, a last resort for all who've never felt.

Sit across from you, why are we even here?

There is no way to make up for these 20 years.

If I could flip this table I'd stab you with every word that lied its way

out of your head.

Well, I don't know THAT many that have been told to me, but here are the main ones that annoy me

1. Everyone who listens to Dubstep is a jobless stoner that listens to nothing but Skrillex.

2. People who class any form of Electronic music as Dubstep.

3. People who think their musical tastes make them better than you.

I enjoy hip-hop from the 80s/early 90s, back when there were a lot more clean rappers. I also like southern gospel (see Bill Gaither and Signature Sound for the exact kind that appeals to me), chamber music, classical, opera, symphonic metal, electronica/EDM, bluegrass, some forms of dubstep and industrial; bebop jazz (and to a lesser extent, smooth jazz), much of the rock from the 80s, and most forms of the blues. My heritage might have something to do with it, but I'm also a big fan of Celtic music, especially when bagpipes are involved.

Assign me a stereotype. I've yet to receive one and I'm feeling bad about it.

Eclectic musical styles? Fucking hipster.

That tends to be the catch all for things that people haven't heard of or don't understand.

Hipster? I can live with that one. Unfortunately I now need to go buy an entirely new wardrobe and replace my cider with some PBR. Only hipsters drink PBR.

 This about killed me, bro.

Another musical misconception I don't like: "Video game music is just background stuff." As if the work of Jesper Kyd or Nobuo Uematsu somehow isn't the embodiment of raw talent like Soulja Boy is.

In my opinion rap music is a highly difficult art form to stand out in, but there is rap that has very good lyrics and instantly identifiable music in the background.

These people are not rappers. They are rap artists. Go find the ones I didn't link yourself.

This'l: I Forgive You

and Daddy Did Me

DMX: I Miss You

Lady Sovereign: Those Were the Days.

Mike Shinoda/Linkin Park: Hands Held High

Yeah, that one bugs me too, as I'm actually a Pabst memorabilia collector. Stuff ranging from now 'till the 20's, haven't managed to find anything from the 1800's that wasn't stupidly expensive yet.

  • 1 year later...

The misconception that only physical and traditional instruments are "real" instruments. This leads to a lot of people saying things like "electronic music doesn't use real instruments". By technical definition, anything that's used to produce musical sounds is a real instrument.

The idea that electronic music is bad because it takes no effort to create is one thing that bothers me. It takes some serious musical knowledge to make anything worthwhile. If you don't like it, fine, but don't make it sound like all electronic is that easy. That just means there'll be more that's not that good compared to what is good.

Well, I have to make a post about this... People's awful misconceptions of woodwind/brass instruments:

The saxophone is a woodwind instrument, not a brass instrument. There is NO dispute on this subject. The saxophone is played with a reed, how more woodwind can you get than that? There are MUCH more confusing brass/woodwind hybrids out there like the serpent.

People's general misconceptions on what they're hearing also drive me up a wall... So I literally saw a conversation of this happen:

*an oboe is playing*

Person 1: Listen to that saxophone!

Person 2: You moron, that's a clarinet!

Person 3: No, you're both wrong, that's a trumpet.

Me: *head desk*

I think one of the biggest musical misconceptions ever is that Tom Petty can sing.

How do people not know what an oboe sounds like?

Oh, and one more thing that has come up recently. There's this "classic rock" radio station around these parts, 105.9 The Brew if you are as well, which used to be pretty good. They bill themselves as "the next generation of classic rock", so like late 70s/80s/early 90s classics. Still is a pretty good station, actually, but I swear they have new management because in recent months it's been like "oh shit guys, we haven't played anything by AC/DC, Van Halen or Def Leppard in the past 30 minutes, BETTER PLAY 5 SONGS IN A ROW BY THOSE BANDS".

For fucks sake, there is more to rock than AC/DC, Van Halen and Def Leppard. And I'm not just saying that because I hate Van Halen and Def Leppard and think AC/DC is overrated as hell. Also Tom Petty. Fuck Tom Petty.

The fact that if your found listening to classical music and your not over 50, people will look at you like you grew a third eye or something.

I dislike it when people think listening to classical or jazz music makes you "sophisticated." Come on! Enough of the stereotyping!

Oh, and when people think all "Death Metal" music is devil-worshipping and evil. It most certainly is not. Not all of them.

I dislike the misconception all Tuba players are idiots that have a 2nd grade sense of humor. I'm not that, and I am a tuba player actually. But there are a lot of them that are like that, and even more with a bit too much sexual innuendo, in fact, that applies to practically the whole section except me. Heck, I fit in much better with the Baritones and Trombones, but they have alpha male issues for the most part. I'm not like any of this... I might have a superiority complex that exists, but not to these levels. Everybody has issues...

Me: "I don't like Dubstep"

Dubstep fan: "Oh, you just haven't listened to REAL Dubstep."

Me: "No, I just don't like Dubstep."

Dubstep fan: "Not all Dubstep has wubs in it, you know..."

Me: "I'm fully aware of that, I like wubs, I just don't like Dubstep."

Dubstep fan: "Well, let me show you some REAL Dubstep with wubs then." *starts playing wubby Dubstep*

Me: "Yeah, I don't like it."

Dubstep fan: "But you said you like wubs."

Me: "But I don't like Dubstep or the wubs in Dubstep."

Dubstep fan: "How can you like wubs but not Dubstep?"

Me: "Because there's loads of other genres out there that I like which have different kinds of wubs that I think sound better."

Dubstep fan: "Yeah, but that's not real Dubstep."

Me: "I know it's not real Dubstep, they're completely different genres."

Dubstep fan: "But if they have wubs in them, they're just trying to be Dubstep."

Me: "Look, there are lots of different genres that use bass wobbles. They're not mutually inclusive with Dudstep."

Dubstep fan: "Yeah, like that mainstream fake Dubstep."
