When it comes to shipping, one thing becomes immediately clear: Rainbow Dash is the indisputable QUEEN of shipping. It's even mentioned in the OP.

My theory is that it's because Rainbow Dash is Best Pony, but Your Mileage May Vary.

 

Since Rainbow is already spoken for -- by everypony, and I mean everypony -- I'm thinking of how other members of the mane cast might fare in a speculative Season Three romantic dabble by the writers.

 

My pick: Applejack x Some Stallion Who Only Appears In That One Episode

Dashie being shipped frequently is probably a product of her flamboyant attitude, blatant insecurities (which produces a lot of hurt/comfort fics), and tomboyish appeal. She's easier to ship because she can take something of the social role as the surrogate male in the relationship. At the same time, Dash remains feminine enough to retain the charm and appeal of a same-sex pony relationship.

 

You can do a lot with her character. Wanna make Dash overly possessive and jealous? Done. Want to make her weak and in need of comfort? Easy as Pinkie Pie---or Rainbow Pie, maybe, if you have a predilection for that ship. Prefer Dash as a charming lover? Snap your fingers like Discord and make it happen. Her character controts to most scenarios without feeling terribly forced.

I haven't seen anyone taking it seriously out of context, no, though I did see someone turning it into an image macro(combined with a screenshot of Spike laying there by himself with the cucumbers on his eyes) making a joke about Spike failing to turn his swag off, or whatever that silly stuff is about.
