I believe that talents are gifts that you born with and you develop it through the years. For example, I am an artist, and I've been drawing since I can remember (5 years old) but sometimes I'm kind of insensitive towards people who can't even draw a stickman, and I am like "it's not that hard to draw circle, c'mon!", but maybe for that person is trully hard to draw!

I may know how to draw, but I don't consider myself a singer, actually I am awful, and I am secretly jealous of people who can sing very well, not autotune good, but natural good :3 (Usher, Christina Aguilera, Mariah Carey etc.), maybe they may have the same attitude, "how come you can't sing? is not that hard!"

There are also people that are natural born dancers, I am not talking about professional dancers, I am talking about people who don't have issues trying to feel the rythmn through their bones and move their bodies accordingly no matter what music are thrown at them, then learning dance moves are rather easier for them than the rest. I consider myself one of these (kind of :P )

it is possible to learn, all of the above, or more. There people who are natural leaders, other are very elastic and agile, other are rather fast with numbers and complex formulas, and the number of talents are infinite!

so, what do you stand for? do you think that talents are gifts or skills?

I think that talents are gifts. Skills are when you trained for something over a time(I wouldn't call that a talent), while gifts, come all naturally.

Talents are gifts. You were just born with them. You can aquire skills and develop them. Sometimes you can develop skills through your talent.

I have a great memory and this contributes to my muscle memory. Muscle memory is super-short. But, for some reason, mine is a bit longer. This is why I can make high scores on games such as skee-ball and basketball.

I believe talents are mainly skills, but can also be gifts.

I was taught most of my skills at a young age for many years. I'm rather good at tracking and using firearms and fighting all because of the intense training I undertook for a long time.

But, my talent for history was not learned. I always have loved history and just love to recall and talk about all past events. My political views are a gift, since a young age I've always been interested in politics and history and is not because of my parents or the place I lived in.

My father said I was a "Natural Communist" :P

I think some people may be born really good at something but... I think if someone wants to become amazing and piano... and they Really want to learn how, Than they can be amazing at it, For some people it could take days... And for others it could take years, But I think if you really want to know how to do something, You can do it.

Now... That isn't really true for some things... As you said, Some people have an AMAZING singing voice and others... Just dont have that good a voice. And Also, Like you said with dancing, Some people just feel it, Its just what they do, And others have to learn and may never be good at it.

So I think in some cases its a gift and others its a skill. So... I didn't vote.

I think that the answer to this could be found in two places, the Meno by Plato and An Essay Concerning Human Understanding by John locke.

In the Platonic dialogue the question whether virtue is innate or taught is discussed, it is a real interesting read and would at least make clear this problem of whether base skills are innate or taught.

Personally it seems to me that these things are taught, 'natural skill' is merely a disposition to do a thing in the first place, not to have skill in knowing it. To say that a skill, let us say drawing, is innate brings a host of problems with it. To answer this objection one could look at John Locke's An Essay Concerning Human Understanding. In this work he puts forth his famous theory of tabula rasa (or blank slate)

In some cases gifts are just genetics.

Also, above poster is right. Check those out.

In my case I would say my talents are musically inclined. I can pick up moat instruments in a matter of hours or days, and my voice is pretty good. Not stellar but since I've never had proper lessons it isn't too shabby.

Me and my brother are the only ones who can play instruments out of pretty much my entire family.

I'm also talented at manipulating and convincing people, which I think of as a gift. I got this from both of my parents.

Finally, there are my writing skills. I've been honing them a long time but I was able to read pretty much any book since I was three and from then on developed a taste for literature. I'm not perfect, of course, but you can never be a perfect writer-there's always stuff to improve on! I think that's what I like the most about it.

Again, my parents don't have this, but me and my brother do. Then again, he's good at pretty much everything.

Hope I don't sound like a braggart...

Well I guess I'd say gift. I played on the computer when I was 4 years old and now I trained myself in so many things on the computer. The gift was how to understand the computer I guess. Then my skills became art, music, videos, gaming, coding, and repairing. All thanks to how I understand the computers elements/brains on a sorta different level.

Well, I think it just depends on how you learn that talent.

I excel in the visual and vocal arts. My friends and peers say my singing is awesome and that my pictures really good. I even admire others' singing and their works of art(one of my friends makes VERY cute animal pictures that shows how much we like to annoy each other XD)! To be honest, I don't know how I got so good. All I know is that I've been singing and drawing for a pretty long time. Because of that, these talents are my gifts.

My skills rest in fighting and academics. I'm a 1st degree black belt with a wooden sword and a dream of someday becoming a master. Martial arts didn't come easy to me, not even as a white belt. I always screwed up on forms and combinations and techniques on my first attempt. There was even a time I thought about quitting. It took a strong determination and forged friendships to provide the drive I needed to reach my first goal; becoming a black belt. Academics weren't so easy for me right off the bat either. I was always an A/B student and I sucked at math. I didn't even start studying for tests until seventh grade! Since then, I got more As and lesser Bs. Since I experienced difficulty in learning these talents, they're my skills.

I think that talents are pretty much gifts, while you can have them as a skill that you practice and aquire, the best of that talent are always going to be the ones who where gifted with it at birth.

So while someone could learn to play an instrument or draw or anything, they won't be able to develope as fast or as good as the person who is born with the gift of that talent.

Does that make sense?

I think that talents are gifted from when you were born, but that you need some skill to sort of develop your talent.

But i also think that talents could be a result of skills. For example, you could be gifted with the ability of learning to play an instrument easily, but you could learn to play the same instrument even if you didn't find it that easy.

I suppose gifts.. though I actually lean towards both on many things.

Of course, the only skill I know that I have is in my writing, be it good or not lies in the eyes of readers.

But, really, anyone can place words in a sparatic pattern that plays with peoples emotions, it isnt hard, and lots of people do it.

They are both related. The soviet union and modern china would take gifted children away from their government into enclosed government facilities where they are trained to push their talents to the limit.Someone who might be a better runner than a Olympic gold medalist might not be a runner in a free country and be a CEO instead.

I think that being gifted isn't that much a factor in a society that practices some form  of social darwinism and a big brother government to force people to be good at certain stuff.

I'm not gonna choose either in the poll because it's more complex than that.

I actually have many talents and gifts. Some were taught to me by loving people, some I had learn all on my own. Some didn't know how to teach theit talent or gift and didn't even know they were preventing other people from finding their gift or true talent. Let alone share it with others. I actually can't help but think that at my last job, it was one of the things that made me so good at it. Was I was able to combine my understanding of so many things it's what made me a master at it. I can actually say that i was so good, that the mere mention of my name meant a perfect job done each time and ever time. As a matter of fact, there were times where it was specifically requested that I do the job because of my good name... I can't help but feel; how is it that i had such a good name and did such good work that people loved and depended on and payed me well for... that now I have no name and no job, and no money... It just boggles my mind everytime i think about it... and yet i'm trying to do something where i actually don't have the skills or talents or money to do and it's been been the toughest thing i've ever tried to do.... because i still love the very idea of what it is I am trying to do. Why does life have to be so ironic...
