music Does your music define who you are?

Dammit why can't people tell the difference between Death Metal and Screamo? (No offense)

So anyways I listen to a lot of "Dark" music and "Happy" music. I listen to many different bands I like thrash metal (Slayer, Exodus, Kreator, etc,) but, I don't go around with a gun killing people. I like black metal (Burzum, Mayhem, Carpathian Forrest, etc) and I may be an Atheist but, I'm not a Satanist. I like death metal (Death, Morbid Angel, Carcass, etc.) but, I'm not a violent person at all. So in a way no it doesn't. Of course I also like grunge (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains) and other sorta "indie" stuff (Sonic Youth, Pixies, The Smiths). So I'm not sure I'm really diverse in terms of musical taste.

In all honesty, my personality can be a bit wonky at times, which somewhat reflects in my music tastes

Like this one for example

It's spontaneous and quite spastic, kinda like me >:3

If my music defined who I was, than I wouldn't have a single clue on who I am. There's just a bit of everything there, so pinpointing something like that would be freaking impossible.

Best for me to not think about that stuff.

No, but there are a few exceptions.  I generally listen to dark, depressive music.  I'm not exactly the most depressing person, but I can be pretty pessimistic at times.

Overall though, the music I listen to is basically hate-filled, and full of mindless aggression.  I'm not an aggressive person, and I'm certainly not full of hate.

I listen to music that is emotionally, stylistically, and chronologically varied - soft rock, mainstream pop/rock, dance, soul, a little hard rock, etc. all ranging from the 1960s-present, with more emphasis on pre-1990s music. So the subject matter and the emotional impact of the music I listen to is not necessarily indicative of my personality; for example, there are a lot of love songs I listen to, even though I don't really know if I've ever loved someone else as depicted in such songs.

What is common to the music I listen to is that it is almost entirely hit singles or otherwise well-known songs from familiar artists. That is somewhat reflective of my personality in that I am averse to unfamiliarity, results-oriented, organized, and analytical.

I feel like this can start a chicken-and-egg debate. Because who you are will determine the music you listen to, and the music you listen to will influence you.

@, Good taste. I love old rock music though I'd have to say my favorite genre is (by far) alternative. I probably listen to too much Smashing Pumpkins for my own good

This kind of music helped me get through my depression as I struggled through my adolescence. Well, not the first song. That album just came out earlier this month :D

No sure if "define" is really the right word, but the art we choose to consume can certainly be revealing. I listen to anything from Igor Stravinsky to Radiohead to bouncy J-pop tunes, all covering a wide variety of tones.

I could take that to mean that I'm simply a multifaceted person, but really, we all are. Some are just more open to exploring those facets than others.

This is very true, as music is expressive in nature. Meaning it would be quite natural for a person to like pieces of music that range in tone from happy to sad and anything in between; as that reflects human experience.

Although the danger I fear is if someone listens to one type and tone of music exclusively, as I would be concerned for such a ones well-being. We all will have almost a "base tone" or "key" if you like ( mine would most certainly be a minor key ), but being incapable of enjoying other types would be problematic. I remember reading once how in Traditional Chinese Medicine this was in effect the view, so listening to music of different "tones" was healthy; while the alternative could become detrimental to ones health and mental state.

I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees
My heart is like a broken cup
I only feel right on my knees.
I spit out like a sewer hole
Yet still receive your kiss
How can I measure up to anyone now
After such a love as this?

Most of my music is either upbeat happy house music or downbeat, calm, relaxing future house/deep house. All those adjectives I would say define me pretty well. I also listen to a lot of French music and considering I'm obsessed with France I'd say that also defines me. :P

I usually listen to uplifting music like uplifting trance, I've listened to hardcore and I just find the dark sound of it too entertaining.  I do listen to dark music sometimes though, but it's on a rare occasion.

Does music define who I am? Heck no. That's stupid. What I listen to is affected by how I feel when I go to put music on.

Some days might be classical days, while others might grace my ears with a touch of daft punk. Who I am and my music are totally unrelated.

Eh, sometimes. I listen to a large variety of songs, which means I like a lot of songs with different tones. For example, my music ranges from upbeat and happy, slow and relaxing, slow and sad, sad, pessimistic, experimental, optimistic, pretty, cool, serious, and more. My personality falls into some of those, but not all.

I'm open to pretty much any kind of music, and because of that; there aren't a songs in my music library that are similar in tone. Therefore, I don't think the music I like defines me too much. A lot of variety doesn't exactly pinpoint my personality traits well.
