I am a huge fan of Studio Ghibli. I have seen almost every movie they made and they are all great films. The first Studio Ghibli movie I saw as a kid was Kiki's Delivery Service. If had pick my favorite movie I would have to say Spirited Away. The story was great and it was just made so well. It is a great movie.

So whats your favorite Ghibli film?

My other favorites would be.

Castle in the Sky

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

Princess Mononoke

Kiki's Delivery Service.

i have two

the one i have the most fun watching is Porco Rosso, its just so enjoyable and out side of Hayao Miyazaki usual think and that's what rely caught me on

the other one is Princess Mononoke because it is just masterful and i personally think of it a the greatest  animated movie next to Beauty and the Beast.

so yeah i am going to vote Princess Mononoke tho this rely depend on weather or not i value it down to the subbed or dubbed version because Porco Rosso is a Disney dub while Princess Mononoke is a half Disney dubb

I liked "Castle of Cagliostro" because it had a good story line and a fair bit of action (and a man being killed by a clock!) I also liked "Pom Poko" and "My neighbour Totoro" as Pom Poko was funny and because Totoro was cute. I HATED Porco Rosso and Ponyo as they were far too boring.

First of all, I haven't seen every one of those movies. Yes, I know everyone thinks every Miyazaki movie is a masterpiece and will name one of them as their favorite anime movie of all time, but sometimes it takes me a while to catch up. I'll get to them all eventually (let's watch them in the stream!). My favorite movie of the five that I've seen is Nausicaä and it probably always will be.

Looking at some of the technology, you can see a bit of a steampunk/dieselpunk influence (something I've always been fond of). The poison forest spreading across the world is a twist I've never seen before on a post-apocalyptic landscape. It also reminds me of one area in Crystalis, an NES RPG I loved as a kid. As someone who has always been very fond of nature and grew up in a heavily wooded area, it literally hit close to home.

Apologies to those who are hard-line sub or dub guys. I prefer watching most anime in the original Japanese, but there are exceptions where I believe the English dub does a better job. In the case of Nausicaä, however, I have no preference. Both are great. English is a little superior in the moments when Patrick Stewart speaks. How can you resist that soothing yet authoritative voice?

And the soundtrack, it's gorgeous. So many feels. The

almost moves me to tears. Somewhere around here is a thread asking what the theme song to your life would be, and I had to name the theme to Nausicaä as mine. Joe Hisaishi is a composer on the level of John Williams and Uematsu Nobuo in my opinion. Edited by Artemis

I've only ever seen the English dubs of them. So whatevs.

But I really liked Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. But I like Howl's Moving Castle the best. All the movies have great soundtracks, elements of steampunk and magic, and never a clear distinction on who's evil. But.... actually, I don't know. Howl or Spirited Away are both incredible in my opinion.

Some of the first animes

i did see back in the good old

VHS days did come from Studio Ghibli.

First being the Princess Mononoke which just

blew me away on how stunning it was,  the music and plot

captured me.  It sort of showed me what  anime could be

outside the DBZness and Sailor Moon.  Add in the Cat Returns

and others,  i watched anything i could!

Spirited Away is probably my favorite because I watched it the most as a little kid. I always used to rent My Neighbor Totoro, Nausicaa and The Valley of the Wind, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in The Sky, and Princess Mononoke too at my local video store. I just recently watched Howl's Moving Castle and it's now one of my favorites. Grave of the Fireflies is also amazing (though I do have to warn you, the last 15-20 minutes had me crying like a baby) Everything about these movies (plot, characters, soundtrack, animation, etc) is definitely god-tier film quality.

Oh, well I've seen most of the films by studio ghibli, but I tend to have a short attention span at times. So yeah, about the only one of those I've remembered after all this time was Kiki's Delivery Service.

Well, I also remember Ponyo but I dislike that one.

I have two, but one is more effective than the other.

The first one is The Cat Returns. I love cats, so that has to be a factor to me liking it. I also like the scenes when Haru turns into a cat, or, begins to. I just love how the cats misunderstand human culture.

The second one is Spirited Away. I just love the overall randomness and craziness that the spirits give us.

(BTW, Tara Strong voices the giant baby)

I have seen most of the movies.

My most favorite movie is "The Cat Returns". It is quite rare to see a certain character from another movie returning in another, non-sequel, one. Plus the cats were adorable.

"Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" is close second. It actually made me cry.

"Tales from Earthsea" is my third favorite from the bunch. Beautiful and very colorful, but a bit... confusing, I guess.

Every movie that I've seen have great characters and great development. Masterpieces, all of them.

Nausicaa is my favourite, but I went back and altered my vote to Castle in the Sky, for a couple of reasons.

A: The two movies are basically tied in my mind, and B: Why on earth isn't Castle in the Sky getting any love!?  Zero votes!?  This makes me sad panda :(

My favorite anime movie is probably Akira. Yes, yes, I know it's not a Ghibli film, but still. As for Ghibli movies, I like them as follows:

1. Princess Monoke

2. Spirited Away

3. Porco Rosso.

The best part about Porco Rosso is

the fact that the reason for him becoming a pig is never explained. It just happens.

I'm a terrible person because I've only seen 5 Ghibli films.

For me, it's a tie between Spirited Away and Grave of the Fireflies. I can't choose between the two.

I voted Grave of the Fireflies because no one else has and I'm controversial like that. 9QvF1.png

The other three films that I've seen are Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, and Ponyo.

Oh, I am a BIG fan of Kiki's Delivery Service.  It's one of my top five films.  I didn't like it the first time because I didn't realise the story would be so small and simple, but since then that's been a huge part of what I've loved about it.  It doesn't force anything, it just tells a nice little slice of life growing up story, where the main character happens to be a witch.  And the animation is simply georgous!  The best looking animation I've seen outside of Noein.  The end credits song is beautiful too.

I also really like Castle in the Sky, it's animation is jaw dropping too, and though the story isn't anything too special, they just pull it off so darn well.  I loved Spirited Away the first time I saw it, but just haven't been able to get that first time back.  I'm not so much a fan of My Neighbor Totoro or Princess Mononoke, they just weren't for me.  And that's all the ones I've seen.

Tales from Earthsea is apparently based on a series of books , and got squished into one movie, hence why it's confusing.  Whee I love seeing more votes for The Cat Returns!

I voted for Cat Return as my favorite. But Castle in the Sky is a tied 2nd for me since the art is so beautiful! ( It's tied with Nausicaa since I really like that movie's plot)

Easily Princess Mononoke. I feel like other Miyazaki works except Kiki's Delivery Service are too rushed and that the plot solutions are easily guessable.

The first Miyazaki film I watched was the Disney version of Nausicaa and while the animation and film direction weren't bad, I felt the plot was severely lacking and it was preaching nothing more than an environmentalist stance. At least with Mononoke, there was a green message to it but it did it in a way where certain myths and legends came to life, such as the "Lady of the Wolves" from Iroquois mythology.

I watched Spirited Away and the acting in both sub and dub versions were horrible and the storyline seemed to go all over the place. I know the major situation of the movie is that the girl's parents are turned into pigs via Gluttony and she needs to work in some mystical amusement center to pay the debt, but then the film just seems to take a turn in all sorts of directions that I started to lose focus of the main objective.

Overall, all of Miyazaki's films have incredible animation and it is fun to watch, but he needs to become a more seasoned writer.

I enjoy watching them.  They have good animation and amazing storylines.  My list of favorites are in order below.

  1. Castle In The Sky
  2. Spirited Away
  3. Kiki's Delivery Service
  4. Howl's Moving Castle
  5. Ponyo
  6. The Secret World Of Arrietty
  7. Pom Poko
  8. Grave Of The Fireflies
  9. The Cat Returns
  10. Whisper Of The Heart

All of the studio Ghibli movies are amazing.  This is just my opinion of what the top ten are.  I still like the other ones.

Thank you for taking the time to read my reply and I hope to read a lot of good replies myself in the future.

Princess Mononoke.  An absolute masterpiece of animation.  You don't really associate Miyazaki's style with "action" but here, combining his sense of imagination and eye for detail with an epic, action filled fantasy with all sorts of creatures and sights to behold, you get something amazing.

And yet, within all the action and violence (surprisingly bloody for Miyazaki) there's a soft spoken subtlety about its message and themes concerning the environment vs mankind.  There are definite protagonists and antagonists, but at the same time you can see where both are coming from.  It's important to protect nature from being corrupted and consumed, but there's also a place for mankind and human progress in the world.  And the answer to the conflict isn't easy, but it is one that is hopeful and optimistic.

Plus the sight of some of those animal gods is absolutely amazing.
