Just a suggestion but I think it'll proably attract more of what you need and help clear your point across if you specifically state in your thread title something like "Need help with website creating, any tips?" just a suggestion again but the misleading title might make people think its a welcome thread and you might not get your hands on as much of the resources you want :P.

Again just a suggestion though.

I personally don't know anything about creating webpages really, I mean I've used some site creators that have full out templates, but they're pretty simple and don't actually involve any real programming, just drag and drop and a bit limited on customization.

Best of luck though :).

And no I don't want to use the website template stuff, its free, but then there are ads everywhere like: PAY 1,000,000$ A SECOND AND YOU CAN GET A FREE CUSTOM DOMAIN NAME!!! img-1265175-4-blink.png seems like a good deal to me.

You should just be able to go to your post and edit it, then look for full edit, the topic title should show up on the top of your edit somewhere, just change it from there and save and you should be good to go :).

Yeah I don't like template stuff, pretty annoying ad's and such, and it just isn't very free.

What kind of website? A forum, or just a regular website? If you're completely new, I'd recommend learning HTML (Used to make nearly every website), along with JavaScript/CSS. Once you're comfortable with that, start learning PHP. That's a great website language, and a powerful one, too. If you want to make a forum, but not from scratch, you can get pre-made forums. IP.Board, what was used to make this forum, costs money, but it's worth it. If you don't want to spend money, I'd recommend SMF of Phpbb. Not Vbulletin, I just think it's not very good.

There are tons of support forums for making websites and hosting servers. Or you can talk to Feld0 or Key Gear. They know a whole lot more than I do, and would love to answer any questions you have.

If you don't want to pay tons of money for hosting, you can just host on Feld0's server. If you look on the homepage of his website, he offers semi-dedicated hosting.

Alright, thanks. I don't want to have a hosted website so I'll make one myself, also can you recommend me any tutorials on HTML, Javascript, CSS, and PHP?

PHP, I have no idea. I'm not very familiar with that language myself. Javascript, there's countless tutorials on youtube and whatnot.

HTML, just search "HTML tags". There's tons of websites that show all the tags HTML has to offer.

for example:

<html>
<head>
<title>Website</title>
<meta="tags" />
</head>
<body>
<p>There were a few other basic tags I can't think of at the moment.</p>
</body>
</html>

Those are tags, in case you don't know. HTML is actually a really easy language to learn, but I highly recommend using it with Javascript or css, possibly both.

I'm curious, exactly what are you planning to build, Eragonrde12?

If it's a pony fan site of some kind, there's a new project I'm working on that involves building websites for fans that need them. If you're really more interested in getting the site itself launched rather than actually building it with your bare hands, PM me and we can discuss this.

Otherwise, if your heart is set on becoming a web developer, pull up a chair and make yourself comfortable. :)

Your website will have to be hosted somewhere if you want it to be accessible from the Internet. I think you might be confusing web hosting for service hosting - more commonly referred to as "SaaS": software-as-a-service. With SaaS, you get some kind of service without ever needing to so much as bother with configuring any aspect of a server. Blogger, ProBoards, and WordPress.com are three extremely popular SaaS's.

With web hosting, on the other hand, you get direct access to a server that you can upload your website to. If you are serious about getting into website development, this is what you want to have, and it's the type of hosting that Link was referring to (which I offer):

If you don't want to pay tons of money for hosting, you can just host on Feld0's server. If you look on the homepage of his website, he offers semi-dedicated hosting.

HTML and CSS are a good place to start, as they are completely unavoidable in web development. They aren't programming languages; rather, one is a markup language and the other a layout+design language; but they're crucial to have a solid understanding of before moving into any web programming.

Unfortunately, it can be quite overwhelming to find a place to start learning, and all the misinformation out there makes it even worse. I would personally suggest starting out on HTML Dog: it is a resource designed for beginners, and the information is accurate and of a high quality.

Once you've mastered the art of putting a page layout and design together, you can begin the fun part: putting some software behind it. ;) If it's a forum you're looking to build and you have some money to spend on it, by all means get IP.Board. Take my word for it: there's nothing better.

If you want a free forum package, MyBB and SMF are the best, most developer-friendly ones. phpBB is honestly a nightmare to manage if you intend to modify or add on to it in any way, so stay away from that one.

For an environment to mess around in, look into WampServer or MAMP, for Windows or OS X, respectively. These installers will set up a full *AMP environment (Apache-MySQL-PHP: a webserver, database server, and programming language) for you to work with. You do not want to run an actual, live website from your own computer for a plethora of reasons, but a local development environment is free and lives on your own computer, which is a good way to figure out if you actually enjoy this stuff. :)

Once you feel you're ready to launch a real website, register a domain and get a web hosting account. I personally recommend Namecheap for domain registrations, and can provide web hosting right here on MLP Forums.

Hey there I was in nearly the same situation as you are now, I wanted to go into programming but i didn't know much about it. I asked my friends and they told me to start with html css and javascrip. I tried to learn from books but after a week I gave up because from the book it was kind of boring. Then another friend who I tought was the last person to be into something like this showed me Codecademy http://www.codecademy.com/#!/exercises/0 . It's like a course that will teach you the things you need to create a website. It's easy i think and very entertaining too, at least for me it was. I have just finished the CSS course and I'm currently working on one site just for training and the i will move on javascript and php after that.

@@Eragonrde12, I was looking at this thread and decided to reply when I saw @Feld0 posted and I read it. I was like : LOL never mind Sky. laugh.png

Still if you want some easy tutorials, go to W3Schools. That website contains complete tutorial and reference on how to make website from scratch.

First learn HTML (just say a markup language to polish things on a web page), then CSS (fancy stuff for a better interface). After you can make static web pages with HTML and CSS, learn PHP. It's a programming language which is mainly used for web programming. Just learn that three first and then read about database, and how to use it with PHP.

Like said, it's hard to make a website from scratch. That means you start from a black notepad and write your website one by one, and that's kinda ridiculous. There's a good framework named Code Igniter for web development.

Code Igniter is a good framework for many reasons and it makes web development easier. If you've learnt HTML and PHP then learning Code Igniter will be a piece of cake. There's a complete tutorial about Code Igniter which is included in the downloaded framework. You can use it to create any kind of websites. Since you're still learning web development, I suggest you not to use CMS like Joomla for some reasons.

You just need W3School and Code Igniter to learn web development. Yet, I suggest you to learn about web aesthetic and management. Later, learn about Java Script for more fancy stuff. If you just want to create a simple white black or nasty coloured but working website, HTML, PHP, and Code Igniter is enough actually.

Also learn about network security. There are so many pirates on the high sea.

By the way @Feld0, does that mean that you also host non-pony websites?

P.S. You can PM me anytime to discuss web programming.

Another P.S. because I'm forgetful. I'm also working in a game project (guess what game project) and you may ask me about game development as well, especially MMO. Dang. I learn so many things this year, and it's just March!

Happily so. Whether what someone's hosting is pony or not makes no difference to me, as long as it's legal and they pay their bills.

At this point, I'd advise against W3Schools in favour of HTML Dog. W3Schools isn't as actively maintained as it should be, and teaches a number of rather outdated paradigms.

Also, to someone starting just fresh, Laravel would probably be a better choice of framework than CodeIgniter. CodeIgniter swims in the cruft of its own legacy, and I don't see any practical reason that a new programmer should bother with a framework designed for PHP 5.1 and MySQL 4.1 when PHP 5.4 and MySQL 5.6 are already out and about.

Matter of personal opinion, I guess, but Laravel is able to leverage a lot of really cool new paradigms because it has almost no legacy to speak of. An eBook called Code Happy serves as a fantastic introduction to both PHP and the Laravel framework, and is an eye-opener to read. ;)

Oh. Legal... :lol:

Maybe I will go to Feldian network someday, if I finally have any decent product to launch.

The last time I visited W3School is about two years ago, when someone introduced web programming to me. Since then, self-teaching. :lol:

I will try Laravel. I'm crazy about knowledge at the moment.

MASTER ALL THE THINGS!!!

If you have anything else, tell me please. Any interesting article, paradigm, framework, technology, whatever. Buck school. The Internet is a better teacher.
