Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024) Not bad, not great. It had the potential to be awesome but they didn’t really jump into the possibilities with both feet. Zhen, a new character in the form of a shifty little fox, was a great idea and the character design was fantastic, but the voice actor was so terrible that it pretty much reduced a potentially classic character to a merely average one. A little more femininity would have gone a long way toward making her more endearing, memorable and fun. (Spoilers ahead) The absence of the Furious Five was pointless and only serves to disappoint fans of the series. All in all, it’s just another installment of a series without bringing anything great to make it stand out.

I Am Number Four (2011) This surprised me. I really liked it. I stumbled across this little gem about teens with super powers and the aliens out to destroy them, and enjoyed the heck out of it. It was obviously written and designed to be the first of a series, which is never a good idea unless the producers have a contract in hand guaranteeing further installments. And sadly, no sequels were ever made. Had this been made now, in the era of streaming series, it would have been a hit. But in this case timing seems to have been a deciding factor, and this cool movie had everything but the right timing.

There’s Something in the Barn (2023) This looked really good from the trailers, but it didn’t pan out. Following an American family relocating to Norway where their inherited property has a little infestation problem with some local Nisser (temperamental barn elves). It was a good idea indifferently executed. It had a lot of potential but being boring should not have even entered into the conversation here.

I think they just didn't want to get a bunch of big name actors when they weren't even in the story.

Traffic 9/19

Watched at the weekend. I enjoyed it when it was released but now it has a timeless quality about it. There is just something about the way it is filmed that makes it special, and I can't think of many films where the characters feel so real.
It's a good reminder how film can be at the pinnacle of the arts.

American Graffiti (1973) I love this simple movie about an ensemble cast each having adventures against the backdrop of one long summer night in 1962. Basically a visual valentine from George Lucas to his beloved adolescence, and it still has all the magic I’ve come to expect from this beautiful early work. This one really sticks with me, long after the credits have rolled.

Beverly Hills cop 1 & 2 (1984 & ’87 respectively) While not the crowning cinematic achievement of the ‘80s these are still a lot of fun and, being representations of my favorite decade, well worth the viewing. It’s interesting that these simple action-comedies can be more satisfying than the most elaborate modern movies.

Fletch (1985) This is a typical representation of an easy time at the movies in the ‘80s. Chevy Chase plays an investigative reporter who stumbles onto a bigger story than he was looking for, with lots of humor and ad-libs flying at a relentless pace. I always liked this movie and it held up well.

Abigail - Another home run from Radio Silence. Equal parts hilarious and thrilling. Tons of laughs and brutal carnage. I had a blast. 8.5 out of 10.

You watch a lot of movies  . I've been trying to indulge more in them as I have a hard time finding much to do on my own, or finding others to do stuff with..

I remember watching I Am Number Four in high school (saw it with my then girlfriend on a date). It was.... well not a bad plot I think. Hardly memorable though except for those few teeth gnashing moments, sometimes literally. The doggohhh....

I just watched Kung Fu Panda 3. Great movie as well (I finished 2 less than 2 weeks ago). They're really poetic and kind of inspiring if you ask me, with the themes. Teaching another not to be you but themselves (though I admit that's a very open-ended take), passing on the torch, uhh... well, I guess that just for 3.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

Was on the edge of my seat and learning stuff with this one, Henry Cavill starred in it.

Finally watched Hacksaw Ridge after it was recommended to me a few years ago. I'm usually not one for war movies but this one caught my interest and it was well worth watching. Andrew Garfield being in it may have helped, just a little.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (2006) I have always loved this movie and haven’t watched it in a while now, so this was a good revisiting of a classic. Mamoru Hosoda reached his apex with this one. He’s done some good stuff since, but this is clearly his crowning achievement.

The Big Country (1958) Great movie with an all-star cast, about warring ranchers (played by Charles Bickford and Burl Ives at their most bastardly) and Gregory Peck as a former sea captain drawn into the fray between the two. Charleton Heston, Jean Simmons and Chuck Connors (as another SOB) fill out the great ensemble. Fantastic movie on every level.

Dune Pt 2 (2024) This movie has achieved the dubious distinction of standing among my Top 20 Most Hated Movies of All Time. I watched the first one just to get up to speed on this one because I wanted to know what all the buzz was about, but I’m baffled. The first one bombed at the box office, got a sequel anyway, the sequel made a fortune, and yet these movies both suck for the same reasons. Both are relentlessly slow and take hours to tell a story that can be told in 45 minutes. When I heard the second movie was fluffed up with some meaningless action scenes just to please the audience, I figured I’d get some cheap thrills out of this. But no, just a bunch of very pointless action scenes that weren’t even exciting and only added to the prodigious length of this movie. The 1984 version of this movie is too long as it is, but at least it told its story and that was that. The story here, while based on a book (to what extent I don’t know), is typical of the usual Hollywood tropes; irresponsible and ignorant use of religious terminology, board room casting, self-indulgent direction and editing, and writing that is so artificial it gave me the only chuckle I had the entire 2 hours and 45 minutes of this living hell. As for the ending , there was no ending! The scenes leading up to the credits were predictable and as boring as the rest of the movie, with a closing shot that suggested only more installments to this marathon of drivel. The next time I want to sit through an overlong epic of special effects and ego-stroking self-importance, I’ll grit my teeth and watch John Carter again, because even that would be entertaining compared to this.

The Fall Guy 6/10

Proper switch your brain off and watch the action type film. Don’t let the plot bother you.

Fine if you don’t go in expecting Shakespeare.

Barbie in Princess Power (2015): Another great animated Barbie movie. This time she goes super on us and does some pretty cool stuff as a princess AND a super! There's some nice tension with her cousin who's jealous of her and becomes a super rival, and a good bad guy (hey, that's an oxymoron!) There's one moment that runs contrary to super etiquette, not done by Barbie but by a bystander, when he reveals her secret identity to the world. So not cool!

Tangled (2010) I Don't like to post repeats of movies I see a LOT, but this deserves another mention. After watching a lot of really crappy new movies I went back to the tried and true. As always, it blew me away because, let's face it, this movie isn't just a movie but a life experience. One of the greatest things ever committed to film.

Okay, I thought I'd have a Late 70s-early 80s Live Action Disney Fest.

The Cat From Outer Space (1978) I love this movie. It's everything that was great about this point in Disney movie history. Fun, innocent and a great time, every time.

The Last Flight of Noah's Ark (1980) Another lost gem. I never see this anywhere. I'm not sure it ever even got a dvd release. But it's a nice movie about a B-29 Superfortress and it's last flight. It ends up unexpectedly for the pilot and crew when a navigation mishap sends them off course to a south pacific island.

Condorman (1981) One of my favorite super hero movies ever. This movie is a gem! So much fun and inventiveness. This movie should have had bunches of sequels.

Next up: Tron

Sure I've got a DVD of that somewhere, still never seen it! :o  Michael Crawford was huge on British TV during the 1970's, this was quite a departure for him. He also palyed P.T. Barnum in the London version of the musical.
