Master Threads

So I was scrolling through the forums (specifically the media beyond Equestria stuff) and I kept seeing all these different threads with a lot of pages of posts from the community and it looked disorganized and unkempt.  That made me think of something more organized but a lot more tedious, (though I am willing to do the work for it)

Is there anyway to maybe get a master thread for different things with ONE post that is locked?

It would be a locked thread that would be created by a user (I am willing to make one myself) and that person would explain what the thread is to and then take the responsibility of having everyone's info pm'd to that individual.  I know it's very tedious but, so is going through millions of pages of people's posts instead of nicely seeing one post with everyone's information on it.

The benefits outweigh the cons:

Pros:

  • The thread/forum overall would look nicer
  • The thread/forum overall would be more organized
  • Everyone would be able to access the information at ease
  • It would cut down on the number of active dedicated people enabling that only the people who go out of their way to be added are actually added. vs the people who post just to be on the thread.  AKA people who want to be on the list get on the list

Cons:

  • VERY tedious work for that individual (but they would have to be willing, such as I am willing to make one myself)
  • It would require more effort than just making a quick response
  • ?? (I don't have anymore really, feel free to provide me with some)

Personally I know there's a thread dedicated to information, but I rather make a master thread for PS3 information (I don't have an XBOX so).

The platform for this idea could be a section of the forum dedicated to organizations.

i.e.

  • "The Official PS3 organization"
  • "The Official Xbox Organization"
  • "The Roleplayers of Equestria Guild"
  • "The Official Rainbowdash Fanclub"

The possibilities are endless and I believe that this will help the forums become more organized and easy to maneuver.

Tell me your thoughts about it. Thanks!

We're about to have a confrontation of opinion, broseph ohmy.png I'd argue one thread is actually more organized than ten threads of the same subject, just all worded differently.

Master threads have cons, yes, a lot of people get discouraged from a lot of posts (something I personally don't get), but then again, we're a -huge- site, and we're only going to get bigger. The threat of an ocean of duplicate topics running around rampant is a far worse nightmare than having a half dozen master threads for some of the more broad topics. The staff only ever make master threads for the topics that have so many duplicates that it's ridiculous; which means, more would happen in the future as well.

I've talked to Feld0 on this matter, and his thoughts on the subject were that people's core goal is to be heard, and they don't think they can get heard on a thread with lots of replies, which is why they don't like big threads. The reality to that idea however, is most people don't read through every post in a thread prior to posting, so it almost doesn't matter how many pages there are. A lot of topics work in the there and then, which is why this concept works.

I'm not for master threads at every opportunity, but I'm also against not having them at all, just so people can have an ocean of pseudo topics that all have little to moderate posts.

It comes down to post quality, not the amount of replies tongue.png Trust me, if you want to be heard, you can make yourself heard through your posts, and what -you- personally do. Not by what topics you avoid because they 'have too many posts'.

I'm afraid I'm not 100% understanding your suggestion, honestly ^^; That's my thoughts on master threads overall, but your idea eludes me.

As I understand it, his idea is:

1. Somepony makes a thread which is locked and nopony can reply to it.

(This thread will be used as a place where you can find information about different individuals of the forums.)

2. Everypony who would like to show their information (ex XBL/PSN) gives the OP their information through a PM.

(Though it would be better if somehow everything was done in a more.. Effective way)

3. OP puts the info in the thread so it looks something like this:

XBL users:

Gone ϟ Airbourne

XBL Gamertag: GoneAirbourne24

Games: Charlie The Unicorn - The Game

Jokuc

XBL Gamertag: Jokuc

Games: My Little Pony - The Game

Finesthour / Crona The Critic

XBL Gamertag: FinestHour, CronaTheCritic

Games: Dora The Explorer - The Game

etc.

PSN users:

~Chaotic Discord~

PSN Username: Lil'poo

Games: pong

Feld0

PSN Username: ChuckN0rris

Games: pong 2

Personally, I would prefer threads for discussions. In fact the Skype thread is a bit of a thorn in my eye since it's essentially exchanging information you can simply put in your profile. I would much rather add such contact info to my profile and have people look there for any of it. That includes XBL, Steam, PSn and what have you.

Master threads in all honesty should serve as a sort of central point of discussion and be the basis for chatting about something, organising get togethers and such. Exchanging information ought to be done through what you make available on your profile. The good thing about it, users have the leisure to remove it at any time and not have to rely on other users or admins on how they spread their information. The idea about a PSN is to casually talk about new releases and arrange some fun times together.

That said, this doesn't mean that specific topics for specific games should go, but considering the range of multiplatform titles, general discussion about a game is needed. What you need is proper purpose, which should be explained well in the first post of every master thread.

Also keep them to a somewhat minimum, perhaps not pin them, BUT, have an index somewhere of those threads.
