Who do you look up to in life?

You know, there was a thread going on about which MLPForum members you respect. Then it got me thinking, "there really wasn't a thread about mentors, role models, and the like for life in general." So this is the thread just for that! Which real life person do YOU look up to in real life? It can be anyone really.

  1. Steve Delabar: The ultimate "The Little Train that Could" story. He started off his career as a relief pitcher before undergoing multiple season ending surgeries on his arm. It nearly forced him to retirement from MLB and demoted him to a mere substitute teacher (not saying it's a bad career). Nonetheless, he worked hard when he got a second chance from the Seattle Mariners. Now he's appearing in his first MLB All-Star Game as a Toronto Blue Jays. He showed me that determination, work rate, and faith can get you very far in life, even if things don't go your way.
  2. Arsene Wenger: The manager of Arsenal FC. Longest standing in his club other than Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes. What makes him stand out for me is that he preaches financial prudence in a footballing world where lavish spending is king. He showed that even if going against the flow will hurt your popularity and position, the long term results will pay off. In 2004, Arsenal became one of the few that maintained an undefeated season. I'm an ardent Arsenal fan and I fully respect his decisions, even if it doesn't give trophies in the short run.
  3. Johann Sebastian Bach: He's one of the composers I respect dearly. Everything he does he writes, "Soli Deo Gloria." Only for God. It fits with my Christian faith perfectly. Bach died a poor, destitute man. However, his classical music lives on even to this day and becomes one of the most legendary composers of all time. He didn't care about gaining popularity in this world; he focused on God's glory, something inherent in my beliefs.

So yeah that's just three of my models and mentors I look up to. Who do you have? I'd love to know :)

  • 1 year later...

Huh, not a single post. Well, allow me.

1. Bruce Lee: Lee has inspired me in many ways, both physical and mental. He's who I looked up to while training in exercise and reading philosophy books. He made me strive for greater things and to become my own person.

2. Stephen Hawking: Made me realize that, just because the doctors say you won't live long, doesn't mean they're right. He surpassed his life expectancy from ALS, something that shut most of his body down. He can still think and use a computer to speak, continuing to inspire and learn.

3. Jim Carrey: For having an incredible funny personality. He's known as the master of impersonation (in my opinion), being able to study someone else's personality and mimic it in a funny way. His face muscles are so flexible that he can make himself look like someone else. He's also extremely energetic in his performance in shows or in movies.

Most comedians I look up to as well: Robin Williams, Adam Sandler, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Farley and possibly more that I can't think of.

4. Jackie Chan: For being a funny martial artist (see how I mixed them?). He's an awesome stunt performer and martial artist. He's known for using his surroundings as a weapon more that his body, or even without fighting at all sometimes.

For me:

Gabe Newell: You have to admire how succesful he was/is, he worked at micorsoft, made a few million dollars (a feat in itself) then he used that money to found a video game company that produces some of the best games in the world and is worth a few BILLION

Lauren Faust: Anyone who can make something as amazing as this show must really know what they are doing.

There are probably others that I just cannot think of right now, just because now I actually need to.

I've always been a fan of programming, animation, game design, and just computers in general.

I think that although it is 1 in a million 1 in a billion chance that I would ever be like that it is always best to try.

1. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

A man who became everything a man could ever want to be. Much respect.

There are many people I look up to, not all of them well-known.

The famous ones:

Stephen Hawking

He's a phenomenal scientist whose contributions to Physics are staggering. Aside from that, he's also capable of expressing the theories he works on in language understandable to normal people. I've read some of his books and while the concepts boggle my mind, I do have a basic understanding of what they imply and I think that's an immense achievement.

Lauren Faust

Not just for creating this show, but because of what she achieved in creating it. Not only did G4 revive a franchise with a reputation of being horrible, it also showed that show created for girls don't need to be girly, and that there are many ways to be a girl. Again, that's an amazing achievement.

The not-famous people:

My parents (including my stepdad), grandparents, my girlfriend's parents and grandparents

I don't even know where to begin here, seriously. There are so many reasons why I look up to each of these people. I honestly can't even begin to list all the reasons.

My last high school math teacher

When I arrived in her class for the first time, I sucked at Maths, I wasn't interested in it and I was not prepared to put any effort into it. But this woman persevered. She managed to get me working and her explanations and methods were so clear that I began to see the logic in all of it. I began to improve my grades and even did homework from time to time. Because of this teacher, I went from nothing to an acceptable level. I even had the highest grade of the class once (for the Integrals test, even), and I felt proud of myself and her for being able to do this. All in all, those classes proved to me how important it is to have good teachers in high school.

These three guys.

Mr. Rogers always taught me to be kind and love your neighbors, that whatever good you do in the world will never go unnoticed, even the small acts of kindness. He influenced and touched so many people and is intrinsically wired into my childhood--Mr. Roger's Neighborhood was my TV show when I was a kid, I loved it so much that I kept watching it long after I was "too old" for kids shows. To this day he's still revered and talked about, and for good reason--I can't think of a kinder human being.

Bob Ross (also my childhood) was probably the most influential, and I ought to take his advice more often. I still find drawing and painting therapeutic, and I ought to realize that my mistakes aren't permanent, and that I can always turn them into birds or clouds or trees whenever I feel like it. Happy little accidents. I've been drawing for years and I need to keep that mantra in mind, that everything can be learned with some practice.

Neil deGrasse Tyson will remain my idol despite our conflicting beliefs. I love his explanation of science and he's what originally got me interested in math and the universe in general; he has a way of explaining things that can shrink science down into these small, easily digestible pieces while still painting such a huge, slightly-terrifying portrait of the universe. Everything that he's accomplished is just astounding.

Carl Yngvar Christensen

He's a powerlifter from Elverum, which isn't far from where I live. Before he was even a Junior in powerlifting, he beat the total record of the Senior class.

Petter Northug

A legend in cross-country skiing, which is a very popular sport in my country. He's known for his insane sprint speed and humoristic "mocking" of the other participants, especially his swedish rivals, when he rushes forward and wins when it's expected the least. With other words, a very competitive man, and therefore very inspiring and motivating to me.

Richard Dawkins

He is an English ethologist, evolutionary biologist and author. He's famous for his debates with religious people.

Nardwuar The Human Serviette (John Ruskin)

Probably the best interviewer in the world, known for surprising the people he interviews, with his excellent research. He usually interviews musicians, among them a lot of rappers that I like.

Well, I'm currently pissed at PelleK right now. I'm not even going to talk about him. There is one other guy I look up to as my hero right now though. It's Jun from Gotcharocka. Yes, he's a dude. Don't even think of calling him a girl because I'm not in the mood. -____-

^ That right there is Jun. He doesn't have perfect teeth, but you know what? Who cares. Jun is sweet, caring, lovable and very confident about it. He's also funny and makes me laugh as well. I love him because he can be himself in just about any situation. He's also a very affectionate person who cares deeply about his bandmates Toya and Duckie (Jui). I just really adore him because he's amazing the way he is.

Here's two pics of him with Toya:

Now, here's two of him with my Duckie:

So, you see... Jun is amazing. I love him for being himself, and I just think he's an awesome person as well. :3 I look up to this guy, and I look up to Duckie and Toya as well. However, Jun stands out to me the most because everyone doesn't think he's perfect because of his teeth being a little messed up. Well you know what? Of course Jun is perfect. He's perfect in his own special way, and that's what makes him my hero. >w<

Outside my family, I look up to:

- Martin Luther King Jr.: For being an amazing civil rights leader using nonviolence and civil disobedience and being a good speaker.

- American Founding Fathers: It gives me the chills how they helped make America independent from the powerful Great Britain.

- Mahatma Gandhi: For showing that nonviolence is effective in helping a country become independent.

- Abraham Lincoln: For keeping America together and abolishing slavery.

All my life needed was a sense of someplace to go. I don't believe that one should devote his life to morbid self-attention. I believe that someone should become a person like other people.

Tupac: You were a true gangster. An inspiration to all us little Gs. Why'd you take him God, Why!?

Biggie Smalls: You taught me to never leave home without my .44 and that them cops be trippin. Black Jesus took you into his arms, with a bottle of jack Daniels and the latest from MTV. A welcome of champions.

Two Chains: Guy had two chains, TWO! Game changer right there. Before him,  all us Gs looked hella whack with Just one chain. 50% more gold, 50% more hoes money, 50% more neck injuries, and 100% more swag. God ain't ready for this gangster, he just gonna wait til Chains enters his turf then drop his tricked out Chevy Camry on him. A fitting death for the man who revolutionized chains Rap.

I'm surprised this thread got replied to after a year and a half of complete silence.

Anyway, I also look up to my parents of course. They shaped me for who I am really. I also look up to Twilight Sparkle just because she's like me in many ways and because I learned a lot from her.

I look up to my Aunt Barb - she's the most interesting person I've ever met. :) She's always telling funny stories about when she used to live and work in France and other European countries, and she's traveled to a ton of places that I hope to visit myself someday (Scandinavia!). It's because of her that I love to try new foods, like duck confit or escargot :nom:. She also speaks French really well so I get to practice speaking French whenever I see her :)

She also always has a bunch of new hobbies, whether it's woodworking, cheesemaking, beekeeping, or her newest hobby, playing the mandolin. :P

What I'm trying to say here, is that my Aunt Barb is so busy living and enjoying the different things life has to offer, that she doesn't have time to be depressed or bored or anything like that. I sorta wish I could be more like her :)

Ehh I really can't think of anyone I look up to. I used to look up to a certain great trombone player in high school when I was a freshman, and I wanted to sound like him someday, so that helped me a bit. As of now.....I don't know.

My father. He is very knowledgable and it comes from him naturally thinking deeply into things and having an urge to figure out everything he can on a subject that interests him. he told me, paraphrasing "everything I tell you is to help you, and everything i learned is from personal experience. As a kid I had terrible male role models. Imagine it as future you going back in time and telling you what not to do. Im giving you a headstart so you wont make the sae mistakes I do, and when I suggest you do something, it is for your best interest."

And when I take his advice, he hasnt been wrong.
