Sugar Pea 2,682 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 (edited) Astraphobia is the abnormal fear of thunder, lightning, or anything under the result of a thunderstorm.I get really anxious when we have a thunderstorm warning...because thunderstorms can get really scary, and I feel like i'm going to have a panic attack when I hear of one. An Old Head 4,816 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 I live in London, where they have great drainage that make floods nothing of worry. In general, I've never really had any repercussions from a thunderstorm blowing through my area, so the answer would be no. One time when I went to Barcelona, however, our exchange house got hit by lightning and cut the power. That was frightening. A huge boom followed by all the lights going out.
Zygen 6,066 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 Eh, no not particularly, i have many fears and possibly a phobia or two, but not Astraphobia. Sure lightning sometimes startles me when its loud(Not to mention if the power goes out.) but it doesn't really make me anxious if it starts thundering. Of course, theres nothing wrong with it, we all have fears and phobias, just not all the same ones. I have plenty of fears in place of astraphobia for sure. 1 Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! Starlighty 952 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 Not really anymore... I mean if i am sitting next to a window and there lighting and thunder i usually jump and get away from the window as fast as i can.. Ok i guess i still kinda do o.o 1 https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&site=webhp&tbm=isch&source=hp&ei=kBduVKzHIMGqoQSA3oGYBQ&q=smile+smile+smile+pinkie+pie&oq=smile+smile+smile+pinkie+pie&gs_l=mobile-gws-hp.3...2593.19183.0.19546.43.36.0.0.0.1.1263.2249.6-1j1.2.0....0...1c.1.58.mobile-gws-hp..42.1.1263.0.t9GmIVfq5Q0#facrc=_&imgrc=PSKZ8o6BCR8iTM%253A%3BpH_DWjyDzGiWzM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Ffc08.deviantart.net%252Ffs70%252Ff%252F2012%252F049%252F6%252Fb%252Fcome_on_everypony_smile__by_dignifiedjustice-d4q4upq.png%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fhdw.eweb4.com%252Fout%252F554482.html%3B1920%3B1080
-BleachedOne- 233 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 Depends on the situation for me, though I wouldn't classify it as a 'fear' in my case. It's more towards 'we get large storms every now and then, and the last one we had practically scared the shit out of me in a large, Earth-shattering kaboom that vibrated the entire house for a good few seconds.' Regular storms? Not really. The big ones can make me jump out of my skin if I'm focusing on something intensely. Also, obligatory image. 1 ~Seraphim~ ~:What's so fun about firing at targets that aren't moving?:~ Yakumo Yukari ~Touhou Project~
Twiliscael 3,960 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 I don't, but my dog sure does. As we speak, the poor little thing is hiding under my chair, shivering like it's been out in the rain for hours, and whimpering. Worst part is, I can't even try to comfort it or it tries to bite. 1 I tend to take the high road, get stoned, and fly low . . .
MelancholicMemory 2,025 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 I'm afraid that a storm will cause a tree to fall on my house. This isn't so much an irrational fear because this has happened before during hurricane Sandy.
Celtore 2,770 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 (edited) I guess I have a minor case of this, I sometimes get really nervous in bad storms. It isn't so much the lightning itself that scares me but rather the super loud thunder and how it can sometimes rattle my entire house. Having really sensitive ears is also really not that fun during these types of storms as well... Edited August 8, 2013 by Celtore
notdog1996 315 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 I thought it was a phobia of space, like, the planet and stars kind of space. That would be yes because dark=scary. I don't have fear of thunder though, I even enjoy it. It's really beautiful when you get to see one, Also, thunderstorms are my friends during summer because they make the temperature/humidity drop 1 INTJ Introvert(56%) iNtuitive(12%) Thinking(75%) Judging(1%) You have moderate preference of Introversion over Extraversion (56%) You have slight preference of Intuition over Sensing (12%) You have distinctive preference of Thinking over Feeling (75%) You have marginal or no preference of Judging over Perceiving (1%)
Smarts 1,622 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 As long as I'm not outside. Thunderstorms don't scare me in the slightest as long as I'm inside a vehicle or my home. When outside, I start to worry and just focus on getting inside as fast as I can. 1 IF is best girl.
SkyDream 315 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 I love thunder and lightning. I find it to be an incredible impressive array of Nature's prowess and capabilities. It really is awe-inspiring, to a degree. Though I can absolutely of course see why it could be scary at times. Even something so small as being jolted upright by the sudden sound of thunder is jarring. I have a friend who loved storms, but then his roof was set on fire by a stroke of lightning, and he's been deathly ill-at-ease from it since. That's understandable. I'm afraid that a storm will cause a tree to fall on my house. This isn't so much an irrational fear because this has happened before during hurricane Sandy. Why, where are you on the east coast? I'm a little east of New York City, and we got it pretty bad, but almost all of the damage was flood-related. I've heard worse winds, and the rain wasn't that bad. I just can't overstate the damage from the flooding though. Hell, I work in a hardware store. I've heard some crazy stories from people who sought solace on my shoulder while picking out a crowbar to knock their own rotting house down.
crazitaco 596 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 (edited) I absolutely love thunder and lightning. Once during a huge lightning storm (there was a flash of lightning atleast every second), me and my family drove out and parked out in an empty area just to watch the lightning. Apparently we weren't the only ones with that idea, there was like 5 other cars too, lol. We had a great family time enjoying nature. @Mellon Collie That seems like a pretty legitimate concern in your case, and i would be scared too Luckily the trees around my area are pretty darn short and probably not heavy enough to crush my house (some are more like overgrown shrubs really) otherwise i probably WOULD be scared of lightning. Jackie 57 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 Not really, but if I see a lot of lightning strikes and I'm outside then I get pretty nervous. D: When I was in 7th grade there was this big girl that was always rude to everyone in my art class. But whenever she would hear thunder she would start whimpering and crying. Tual 152 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 I was scared of thunderstorms for a long while once, because one surprised me, and caused me to hurt myself very badly. But, I think lightning and such can be very pretty. Lightning tends to make me a bit nervous, and I hate, hate, hate being out during a lightning storm.
Moon Rat 4,772 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 Nope, not really. I used to be afraid of tornadoes coming with the storms however, I got over that fear quite a while ago. I am still a little iffy on the lightning aspect though, but I'm not too overly fearful of it, just cautious. 1 Thank you Nas for the sig :3 #HugWoona
Winona the Dog 1,984 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 (edited) Actually, I'm quite the opposite. I love thunderstorms (unless they tear up the whole place ) I love the atmosphere before said thunderstorm comes. Feeling the strong wind blow in my face and the rustling of the trees is all very calming to me. Edited August 8, 2013 by Lady Rainicorn
~Silver Essence~ 2,625 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 (edited) Not really, but I won't hide it when I say I do at times. The feeling of being the unluckiest to get hit by a thunderstorm, or the hard thunder noise when it's cracking makes me really nervous at times. But I do love this type of weather, dark, moody, scary, my type of weather alright. Edited August 8, 2013 by DXSilverX
Arretez 225 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 I don't have it. I actually enjoy the thunder and lightning. Sometimes, I just gaze upon the sky in wonder. I think that my dog has astraphobia, though. He freaks out when there's rain, lightning, and/or thunder. He'll just pace through the house and jump on top of me, all while panting like crazy.
Discordian 6,015 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 I used to. It was partially fueled by the first Silent Hill game for PS1 where the final boss shot red lightning though. When I saw this for the first time there was a lightning storm going on outside that actually zapped a microwave in the parking lot next to the apartments I was living in at the time so it kinda left me with a feeling of coincidental fear. Years later I don't really fear it but whenever I see lightning it always unsettles me to an extent but I think it's more because I worry about my electronics than anything else.
Rockymoo 2,137 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 Nope! I love thunder and lightning. I actually think it's one of nature's beauties. I love being outside during one(granted I have something over my head so I don't get soaked) just to see any bolts that might come down. I DO, however, have terrible lilapsophobia, so when the wind gets so bad things are flying around, I start freaking out. 1 On 10/13/2013 at 6:59 PM, little gamie said: I'm fresh in school Hey, you. Though around here strong winds never really kick up high enough to do anything than steal your breath away for a few seconds.
Durandal 623 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 (edited) I adore storms! Texas doesn't get nearly enough of them, and they're just so exciting. That and I feel kind of insulated by them. They're protective, in a roundabout sort of way (until lightning catches your roof on fire). Amusingly enough, a Twidash fic made me realize this in particular. "I've always loved storms. Ever since I was a little filly in Canterlot, I'd look forward to them when the clouds rolled in, hoping for a downpour. A storm is a dangerous, prideful, uncaring thing, but I knew that it was no danger to me. It raged, but it raged around me, not at me. Under open skies, I felt vulnerable; anypony could come and harm me when the weather was good. The storm kept everypony away, and with its violence wrapped around me, I felt safe. Even though the storm didn't know how I felt about it, even though the storm didn't care, I could still watch in awe as it protected me. Swift, brash, violent, beautiful." Twilight sighed. It's obvious that it's being used metaphorically, but I consider it true in a more literal sense as well. Blue Bay 1,027 August 8, 2013 Share August 8, 2013 No, not really. It kinda relaxes me when a lightning prevades the night sky just to be followed by a silence breaking thunder. It kinda breaks the tautness of the ever so silent night.
