What's The Big Fuss Over 'Best Pony?'

Remi

Recommended Posts

I personally do not comprehend why the fandom fusses over which pony is the 'best pony'. Firstly, everyone has a different view on the show and its characters. Fighting over best pony is essentially arguing with a handful of opinions against another handful of opinions. There really is no 'best pony', only the pony you, as a viewer, find to be the most admirable, in all of the possible traits. Personality, complexion, participation and role in the show ( such as some will view Rarity, a main character to be best pony, as some will view Lyra to be best pony, a background character. )

Really, I simply want to know why people feel such a strong need to defend their views on this topic, and in some cases, attack and attempt to disprove another's reasons as to why s/he views a pony to be best pony, when essentially, all it is is a big mess of opinions.

I personally view the entire 'best pony' topic and controversy to be more relatable to the 'waifu' topic. Everyone has a different waifu ( if they have one ), and they have their reasons for such. Although those reasons are opinions, they're entitled to respect and thought, such as any other opinion is entitled to.

But what really is the big fuss over what pony is 'best pony'?

You can throw as much logic at something like this as you want, but at the end of the day, community themes and trends are created because of popularity and other factors. 'Best pony', just like 'clopper', 'love and tolerate' and the like, has become nothing short of an inbred meme throughout this massive, unyielding fanbase. When something gets to that level, it just becomes socially accepted norm, even if not everyone actually participates or appreciates it.

I never really understood the big fuss over it either, to be honest. This whole ''best pony'' war of opinions really does raise the question on why people bicker over a trivial matter that doesn't resolve to anything. I understand that people want to express the pony that they hold dear to themselves, but we don't always have to make a big deal out of it. There are some people that don't make it a huge part of who they are, at all.

Yeah, I don't get the big deal about it either. We all have different tastes, including when it comes to the characters, so there really is no best pony, only a pony who's our favorite. If we all had the same favorite pony...that would just be boring. dry.png

I wasn't really expecting it to end by merely posting my views on it, I simply wanted to understand why it is such a controversial matter.

I know :) I'm just giving a response best I can. As far as I can see, it's naturally controversial. It's people's different opinions on their favorite characters, turned into a globally known meme occurrence. Normally people don't care to have bouts or arguments or whatnot over favorite characters unless there's other motives and factors involved, like someone being a dick or something. But the fact this is a social meme sort of thing means people seem to disregard that and just naturally participate or talk about the debates themselves.

Yeah, I compared the "best pony" arguments to video game wars.

Because you have the butthurt fanboys and fangirls that get offended that you don't like their favorite pony and they have to make a big deal out of it. Plus it's just a matter of personal preference that everybody thinks that it has to be done.

My favorite pony is discord. Does that not make sense?

Good.

Because where's the fun in making sense?

:3

No but really, the Idea of "best pony" kinda goes against the idea of the show, doesn't it? Isn't it all about like... acceptance and sharing and stuff?

Actually I have seen far far less of the out of control blind fanboy/fangirl favorite character wars in this fandom than I have seen in pretty every other fandom I have ever been in. Sure it exists and it is annoying when it pops up, but it is best just to ignore it. Most people when they say "*insert favorite pony name here* is best pony" aren't saying "ha ha my pony is better than your's your pony sucks" what they are saying is I like this pony and here is why this pony is my favorite. The whole "best pony" phrase most of the times I have used it and others using it has been half joking half serious, yes the pony in question is the persons favorite pony but it is more like "this is my favorite pony and why I think this pony is my best pony".

In a true sense there is no best pony, but in terms of personal preference and opinion there is. I don't see anything wrong with favorite character debates so long as they remain civil and we realize at the end of the day that just because a pony may not be someones favorite dosen't always mean they don't like that pony. I am liking alot of these ponies more and more as I continue watching, my favorite pony started out as Applejack and still is but is now a three way tie between her, Twilight Sparkle and Luna. Rainbow Dash has gone way up in my list to my 2nd favorite which she dethroned Pinkie Pie from but it was because I liked Rainbow Dash more and not because I liked Pinkie Pie any less. I have made the case for Applejack in particular many times and will likely do so many more times because I do feel that Applejack is seriously underrated because people do overlook many things about her that make her a great character. But I have never insult anyone who hasn't liked Applejack or found her "boring", if anything I have a much harder time keeping my cool about Derpy than I do about Applejack because of the whole censorship issue.

i don't get people who declare that this and this individual is the best individual when they don't even have the facts to support their statement.

i mean

i would've got it if anyone said "this is my personal favorite" or something.

but people are all like - my opinion is fact

or maybe you're overinterpreting the severity of the situation

also, pinkie the pies are is be ever best ponnizzzzxxx

people always talk about stuff like best team, best flavour, best colour etc etc,

'Best Pony' is just our take on it. Plus its fun if you don't take it all too seriously.

I don't participate in the discussion, I like ALL ponies. My favorite is of course Fluttershy, but what does that matter? I mean I absolutely love all the other ponies aswell, and they are not worse or anything... They all have their special personalities, and together it adds up to something magical - I tried to make an imaginary list of the ranking on the ponies or something, but I would feel so bad for putting someone at the bottom, that I just scrapped the entire thing in my head. They all rock, so there is no point in arguing which one is the "best". But of course, people do love talking about stuff like that...

It's just like shipping, do I even have to explain what I mean about that? I don't think so...

Well, there really is no debate. They should call it 'favorite pony' because 'Best Pony' can only be reserved for the mane character, Twilight Sparkle (now in Alicorn form). She is THE Best Pony which is a title that can not be truly disputed. The reason why some do want to dispute it is because they find that their favorite pony is the best and has greater meaning to the show. But of course, they are wrong because only Twilight is the mane character.

"X is best pony," Team Edward vs. Team Jacob, David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar. Who is best captain: Kirk, Picard, Janeway, or Sisko? Nearly every fandom has something over which it's divided. This isn't unusual and it's nothing to be alarmed about. Many such feuds are all in good fun with all jabs and insults meant in good-natured fun.

"Who is best pony" is our fandom's ageless debate for which there is no correct answer and everyone knows it, they just enjoy the banter generated every time it's asked. Recently in the staff lounge we had a best pony debate that dragged on for quite some time without any hard feelings. Sure, there are a few people for whom the fate of the world hinges on the answer and they can tolerate no opinions differing from their own. Such people are easily the minority going by what I've seen in my travels, vicious though they may be. Don't concern yourself with it. Just enjoy what you enjoy and let others do the same.

I'm going to have to agree with he above points, and add that it can be amusing when you get a long string of "that's a funny way to spell X" -esque posts.

My favourite pony is Fluttershy, but I wouldn't call her best pony. She is, however, in the top one.

Think is just something that we have deal with, when people/ponys get emotionally involved in somthing. Either this begin show our other vise. People should just calm down one's in while think abut what they doing. Like do really want have argment abut vise cartoon pony is best pony. And in the end, why is that impotent in grand skim of things? But also think the best pony thing is also most of time meant as joke. Because Applejack is best pony. Haha just kidding. laugh.png

Anyhow that my thought on matter.

Yeah, I compared the "best pony" arguments to video game wars.

Furthering this point, look at some of the video game wars of the past and present. Genesis does what Nintendon't, Nintendo is what Genesisn't. Sega vs. Plaything/Pretendo. PC gamer master race vs. filthy console peasant. X is the best game ever because reason. Platform sucks because it doesn't have X. Platform is the best because it has [the best games/the best graphics]. Replace the variables platform and X as necessary, wherein platform represents a video game platform (e.g. Xbox, PlayStation, Wii U, PC) and X represents a video game. This has gone on forever.

My point is, people like arguing over things, and as long as it remains within human nature, we will always have people debating over insignificant things in life.

I don't see how the "best pony" thing is controversial, or why anyone would give it a second thought. Hell, whenever I've encountered someone declaring "[insert pony here] is best pony", it's usually at least half-jokingly, because OF COURSE that kind of thing is subjective. Then someone says something like this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWdd6_ZxX8c

...and we all have a good laugh and that's the end of it.

Frankly, I think the fact that we're talking about that sort of thing at all is a good sign for the show. It means the characters are distinctive, unique, well-rounded and likable. As opposed to, you know, the kind of characters seen in previous incarnations of the show. A fan developing a strong enough connection to a character to make them want to declare that they are the "best pony" means the show is working exactly like it should. happy.png

Also, Spike is best pony.

It's usually in good fun when no one takes it seriously. Unfortunately, it's more common to see insults hurled at each other, usually because what you find Best Pony can sometimes be worst pony to someone else.

Another thing as I dislike how some people treat liking certain ponies(something a lot of us are guilty of, myself included). A good example of what I'm talking about is when some singles out fans of a certain character as the worst kind of fans(usually over something petty like their popularity), and then praise fans of another pony(usually one of the less popular one) as the best kind of fans. These kind of things are usually the kind of things I see in EQD

I understand that all people like arguing what thing or character is best in their opinion.
But all that "best pony - (and you're dumb if you've different opinion)" thing is just wrong. I look with pity on topics like "pony A and pony B - who is best?". I think that those people should stop watching the show, they just gone too far with emotionally involving into it.

We (they) should understand thet there is no best pony. Who is the best can only be considered in terms of particular
traits, abilities, etc. It can be argued which pony is best on magic or best in some kind of craft.

Twilight is the most important pony rather than the best one - but still more correct would be stating that all of mane six are equally important - without them Twilight wouldn't be able to use EoH and later become princess.

Cause we're humans and we're defined by conflict?  Sure love and peace are awesome concepts,

but we're technically man (or woman) really going against his or her nature.

OR why else would a peace loving group like bronies make the argument in the first place LOL.

it's the tiny need in the back of your mind subconsciously to hold a flutter shy or a raritty,

or some jobber who sells apples and go

"BEST PONY EVA!"

secretly hopping someone will dare dispute you.

or why else do it?

I admit to taking the whole thing more seriously than I should have in the past argh why do so many people like Lyra more than Dashie grrrrr but a decent amount of the time, it's done all in fun. No one seriously expects to convince anybody else, and sometimes it's just fun to go back and forth for a while. While I've made my preferences fairly clear in the past wink.png it doesn't particularly bother me when other people don't share them, as they often don't. If I feel that they're unfairly demeaning a character who is amazing then that'll bug me a little, but at the end of the day, whatever.

Argument is pretty natural. Every fandom needs something to argue over and believe it or not, there are others who handle the pointless debates with far less maturity. I can prove it with a tennis site with 80,000 threads about why Federer, Nadal, Sampras, Laver, etc, is clearly the greatest player ever and everybody else is an overrated failure tongue.png. Anything I've seen on this site is rather relaxing in comparison.
