Is it just me or is Applejack's voice deeper?

I know the fan favourite poll has passed now, but I only just saw the promos. However, Applejack's really shocked me! I don't know whether I'm just imagining it but her voice sounds a little deeper, and less cute :(

Decide for yourself:

As opposed to her "old" voice:

I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if it is. Ashleigh's voice has just changed and, I accept that - maybe a few years of raspy Dash has deepened her vocal chords, I don't know. What do you think?

I actually remember watching an interview where voice actor Ashleigh Ball said she lowered Applejack's voice as the show progressed. Lemme see if I can find a link to it.

Animated shows tend to have the actors refine their respective characters voices as time goes on. Go watch an episode of "The Simpsons" from 90-91 in its early days, and then one from the past ten years or so; the difference between almost all of the characters is pretty large.

I found the interview!

Just skip to 2:22 and listen to what she says. Pretty interesting stuff.

But anyways, I love Applejack's voice, however high or low it is smile.png

You're not the only one who thought that! ;) I too have noticed that AJ's voice is deeper than it used to be. Same goes for Rainbow Dash. DANG HER VOICE IS SO DIFFERENT! It used to be really squeaky and high pitched but now she sounds more manly! XD She's still adorable though. And so is AJ. Her voice is different but she's still cute to me! :) <3

I think it's mainly to do with the way Ashleigh's decided to represent them as the seasons go on, or maybe to signify that they're getting older and they're changing, or maybe because, as you say, Ashleigh's voice has changed over a while.

I noticed this a while back but not only with Applejack. A lot of the voices sound different in the first few episodes than they do now... To me at least.

Most likely what SparklyPegasus said. ^^

I definitely notice the differences in the pitch of voice as well. She probably wants to make it seem like Applejack is growing up a little more. But regardless, I still think she is adorable no matter what. :)

Ashleigh Ball is in her late 20s, so I doubt her voice is naturally changing. In the interview LatinoChurro linked (which I listened to many months ago), I believe she explained that she had difficulty keeping AJ's voice at a higher register -- especially during musical numbers. You can actually hear Ashleigh's voice slip when performing "At the Gala" with AJ's lines, due to the combination of range and accent. Once you start rewatching episodes, it becomes fairly evident that she had lowered Applejack's voice sometime around Season 2.

I honestly don't mind it at all. smile.png

Applejack's voice was at its highest pitch in the very early season 1 episodes. Just watch Applebuck Season and then watch anything from season 2 or 3, and you will hear a substantial difference. However, even during season 1 her voice deepened a bit, although it has gotten even lower as the seasons have progressed. Compare her signing in At the Gala to Raise This Barn, and you'll hear quite a difference. I have noticed that there are times in recent episodes where she sounds almost a bit too low, and that promotional advertisement is one of those examples, but most of the time Ashleigh seems to be able to find that happy medium very well. smile.png

Ashleigh wanted to further differentiate Applejack's voice from Rainbow Dash's, with Rainbow's being more high and AJ's being more low. This makes it a bit easier on Ashleigh since it would drive her crazy if they were both of a higher pitch. I like this, because AJ and RD sounded very similar when AJ's voice was higher, so now there's a bit more of a distinction between the two.

You think with how much of a superfan I am of AJ I would have noticed but nope, not until seeing that comparison did I ever really notice. But then again maybe I am just too busy swooning over her, deeper or higher they both sound sexy to me.

I suppose Dashie's voice has got deeper - just a little - but I did notice AJ's far more. I always picked out the parts when AJ's voice slipped into a higher, raspier note, especially when singing. It is easy to hear the difference between Raise this Barn and At the Gala. She does sound so young in At the Gala! Nevertheless, whoever's voices are deepening, they are both still so adorable!

I think it's great that her voice has deepened since season 1. It really adds to that progressive feeling like time in that universe has actually passed. I love shows like that.

  • 1 year later...

Thread revived.  Interesting.  I definitely noticed that AJ's voice was higher in the first few episodes.  What makes it more interesting is that RD's was the same right from the start.  I guess Ashleigh needed a little time to figure out AJ's.  I think it's better as is.  Now what would be really funny is if Ashleigh kept deepening AJ's voice more and more, just slightly in each episode, until by the end of the series it's like Darth Vader, and just see how long it takes everyone to notice.

The other day my mom and I were watching Made In Manehattan, and my dad came in and asked if the "orange pony" was voiced by Reba McEntire.  Hear that Ashleigh?  You do a great Reba McEntire impersonation, apparently!

The characters are aging as time passes. Voice deepening is a natural side-effect of age. We should be happy that the voice actors are awesome enough to respect continuity is such a fashion.

I noticed, especially when I re-watched season 1 episodes, but it suits Applejack just fine.

Now, you really want to hear a change in voices, compare Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle with a few years ago. Apple Bloom's voice became noticeably deeper (though not by much) just between season 4 and 5, and Sweetie Belle's squeak seems a lot more forced.
