technology Why does everyone demand skype?

I'm looking for a minecraft server (this isn't the topic, don't help me look, this is just the story) and as I scroll through on pretty much every application or somewhere along the lines I need to fill this in: "Skype(required):" I'm getting sick of this, so I must ask, why is it such a big deal? I hate talking to people irl that I don't know, whether it's voice or video, so it turns me off since there is no alternative and I'm forced to do something I hate. The last time I used a voice chat service it was always "hey are you on vent yet? Why aren't you on vent yet? You need to get on vent. You have vent right? Are you on vent yet?" and when it was on it felt awkward and....ugh...I actually completely abandoned that game because it was bothering me so much, it got to the point I dreaded to log in.

I suppose it is because other people wants to know which kind of people that is joining the server and if you as a player in the server needs to know some important things that the persons who's running it wants to tell, chat programs is an easy way to communicate with people. People wanna talk. You hate to talk to people you don't know but other people may hate when they can't talk to people they don't know anything about.

I bet there's more behind this but I don't really know since I don't play many games.

People demand skype because it's a pretty easy way to contact someone. You can also do video calls, just talk by audio, or do what I do and use the text feature. It's just a simple way to get a hold of someone quickly without much stress. It's extremely easy to use as well.

Voice chat servers can actually escalate into barrels of fun when there's enough people, and it really enhances all types of situations, especially gaming. The presence of more people on the chat server helps achieve that. It's far from a requirement, and I too am bewildered by why it would ever be "required", but that could be a reason why.

Voice chat servers also mean, in the context of gaming such as those Minecraft servers you mentioned, you can use less time typing into the chat and more time using those keyboard keys to progress in the game. That maximises playtime. Again, shouldn't ever be a requirement.

Basically everything said above. It becomes critical when playing FPS and RTS games. People who play together are able to communicate actions and devise strategies within seconds, as opposed to the minutes it can take to type things out, which is also a period when they're completely vulnerable.

Seems like it wouldn't be anywhere near as critical for Minecraft. Could just be the people on those servers really enjoy the convenience. Not only that, but you get to know people in ways you couldn't through text chat. Vocal inflections can make a world of difference, and in the case of servers where they're looking for dedicated people, joining Vent, Mumble, Teamspeak, Skype, or whatever just shows them that you aren't some random guy popping in for one evening or unreliably.

To talk to me. It's obvious everyone uses skype to talk to the Sir. Heck, I even think Skype was named after me (both S's ;) )

JK, Skype is great, becuase you get to see who you've been talking to on the forums, from the comfort of your own house. Really amazing really. :)

People have said everything already. Teamspeak is a nice alternative for gaming but if people require skype and skype id's then i dont blame them for wanting to use the full power of skype instead.

Nobody has really demanded my skype I mean sure people have asked me to do video calls. But I've only done that once and that was with my best friend, a member on the forums and I did it for him.

I guess I can relate to why some would demand it, it's a different type of communication. Both seeing the face and hearing the voice of the person you've been talking to. It's easier and who doesn't enjoy seeing how someone looks like. It's also just very convenient just speaking instead of writing texts.

The number one reason why I actually don't do video calls is actually not because I'm shy, it's easier to explain it that way. But the thing is, I can't do video calls for other reasons. It's hard to do, without everyone in my family listening to it.
