All right what is your opinion on the sales that happen the day after Thanksgiving, Black Friday?

I think it's okay to have sales especially close to Christmas, but what I don't like, is how people take them so seriously. I've even heard of people who have died at these sales. Wow, killed by being trampled over over a deal on stuff you don't need. Also I was reading some catalogs for black Friday sales, and some stores were opening their doors at 8 p.m. or even 5 p.m. Okay doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of the day if you're just gonna have the sale the day before. Also, don't people have families?

So anyway discuss away!

Personally I prefer online shopping or shopping on a day that's not so wild.

I don't like it a ton, its really hectic mostly, and its placement to american thanksgiving is quite ironic.

Its like, Thursday your thankful for what you have, but friday, SCREW DAT. And you go out and be greedy essentially.

kinda confusing.

I think it gets out of hand alot of times.

I also think black friday should stay on friday, its been crossing over to thurdsay now. Which i don't like.

I saw a picture of a Best Buy so many people had large flat screen TVs... well guess what those are a bloody privilege, not something you just pop out and pick up at the shop randomly... It seems greedy as hell to me. Then there's also the violence...

If there is any day of the year that easily gives America a justified bad reputation, it is this one. While I am all for the concept of saving a buck or two, the way Americans react to it is sad. Like a flock of sheep heading straight to a shephard that despises them and sees them as petty little ants. Basically peasants beating the hell out of each other for something that they would not have bought otherwise.

Again, I am not against saving money, but middleclass America really shows its true colors on Black Friday.

I remember going out of Black Friday once. Went for a single DVD set...I had to wind around the entire store to get to it (everything was blocked off for crowd control) and then waited about an hour in line for the register.

Never shopping on Black Friday again.

I don't shop on Black Friday, I just remember how it started.

The first Black Friday occurred on September 22, 1873, when a scandal in the government was revealed to president Ulysses S. Grant. A few people were trying to steal 4 Million Dollars in gold, and to stop them, president Grant sold the 4 million dollars of gold to other countries. This caused the price of gold to drop drastically, which is what we symbolize when prices are lowered.

And this has been "The More You Know".

I actually enjoy the day. Considering my family eats dinner pretty early in the day regardless, I've got time to spare.

Here's the thing. I don't camp outside stores for hours on end just to buy something I think I need but actually don't. I instead go a few hours after doors are open to avoid the chaos. If I did the former, it would be for the experience and just mingling with people.

Things around where I live are incredibly tame. Stores have everything planned out from numbers to wristbands to separating "valuable" items all over the store so it's not just a clusterfuck over at the electronics section. Will people rush and move their asses to get something? Yeah. Will they trample and stab people for it? Good luck pulling that off without getting your ass handed to you.

For me and my friends this night, it was a fun mini road trip, where we hung out, grabbed some drinks, and roamed around. We even picked up some sweet deals over at Gamestop, so I'm pleased at how the night went.

Rather than it being a mess where we skipped out on family and a nice dinner, we made it a fun get together. It is what you make of it.

Eh. I don't really care about it. I think it's stupid and pointless, and I know I'm never going to get to partake in any of the sales as I don't particularly have the motivation to wait in long lines and interact with crowds. The less I can interact with other human beings who I don't know physically, the happier I feel. Besides, there are crazier people than me who actually want these things and they'll probably get them before I even have a thought about it. Therefore, I just see it as something that's impossible to actually take advantage of due to all this. And annoying.

I have my laptop and TV solely because of Black Friday. My dad is one of those people who waited outside a couple of years ago. lol

So, actually I don't mind it. Stores are trying to make it easier to get their hot ticket items, perhaps to cut down on the violence. What I don't like is that for the last couple of years, Black Friday has happened on Thanksgiving. That's a line that must not be crossed, IMO.

I live in the UK so Black Friday is less commen than in America. If I did live in America I would have never go out of my house that day. We have a big Ikea shop literally around the corner from where we live and it gets SO annoying with all the traffic when they have sales. we are lucky that we can just walk there but it is SO crowded there that we hardly ever go when there is sales on. Only if there is something there we are actually going there to buy.

Really, Black Friday somewhat stabilizes the economy, but thats already way past the point of no return. Thank you, Green Waffle Bitch, thank you. So it used to have a point but now it's pointless (yet again, thank one of the worst presidents in US history for that!)

Black Friday to me is great if there is something you have in mind that you want to get. Like for instance if you wanted to get something and they had that item on sell (win win). But otherwise I would never go out on black friday because of how stressful it is. Like you said in your post people have gotten extremely hurt on those days.

I like and dislike it. If you pick your stores carefully, you can get great deals while avoiding the crowds of murder, which I managed to do this year. It's awesome to have good deals for a day, but to take is as seriously as people do... eh.

Black friday...oh no, don't even get me started...but I might as well complain...since you asked...

I HATE IT. :eww:

Not only is it right after a day that you're thankful for what you already have but people go absolutely insane. They get greedy and trample others for things they don't even need. I mean why not be thankful for what you already have, WHICH YOU WERE JUST DOING A DAY AGO. >_> America annoys me. And I am american...by the way.

It's just a thing to showcase greed.  I really don't like it, and I hate how it's so close to Thanksgiving.  Thursday we're thankful for what we have, and Friday we're ready to trample people to get something new.

I find black friday to be really sad. Most people put way to much stock into it and as has been seen, it can get violent. Personally I hate how Christmas has become centered around the actual giving of gifts rather than the actual meaning behind Christmas. As a christian this is quite depressing. Christmas has been commercialized, and there are too many people focused on the material aspects for Christmas to return to the way it was.

Personally, I spend Christmas thinking not about the gifts, but hanging out with my family and having fun getting together with all of my relatives to reflect on the year and continue to make new memories, as well as remembering the birth of Christ, which is what Christmas started out as, and should be all about.

I find the concept of a mass free-for-all to be completely pointless. It's not like most stores won't be restocked in a week anyway. Not to mention the WAITING. Why would someone willingly wait for hours on end for a store to open, just to wait for hours on end to buy your crap and get out? THIS IS MADNESS!

From a business perspective, though, I can respect that the hype drives sales up enough to warrant hyping it even more. It's actually a smart strategy, when you think about it. Pointless for customers, though.  >_>

Indeed.
