I was rewatching the scene in Three's a Crowd, when I noticed the other guard:

It's possible? My guess is that Crystal Ponies can be all of the three races, depending on what they were born as. I could be wrong, but that's how I see it.

That's what I was wondering too. All the crystal ponies we saw when the episode took place in the Crystal Empire were earth ponies and now suddenly there are crystal pegasi and no doubt crystal unicorns too?

I don't get it...  What's wrong with him being a crystal pony (aside from him looking stupid...)?  The Mane 6 turned into Crystal ponies for a bit, and it's not like RD and Flutter were discluded.

 

But you wanna know what really bothers me about the picture?  His wing being over top of his armor.  What.

That's been bothering me since Equestria Girls. Was he a Canterlot guard that was transferred to work in the Crystal Empire? And if so, wouldn't he crystallize like the mane 6 did when they visited the Crystal Empire? Or is it optional (as the mane six didn't change into crystal ponies again afterwards?)

yeah, it was strange enough he wasn't crystal in EQ during Twily's welcome, but here? it's not like we wouldn't recognize him

I don't think the Mane Six actually turned into real Crystal Ponies.  I thought they just used makeup because, well...  they were at a fancy Crystal Empire party.  Since that guard there doesn't have crystal eyes, I think he's not an actual Crystal Pegasus but just using makeup as well.  

 

Flash is probably exempt from the uniform for the same reason that he was exempt from the Canterlot Guards' uniform (being a different colour).  I'm willing to bet he's actually some sort of royalty in disguise OR he's going through a similar test as Twilight was and is actually not destined to remain a guard.

This is my question. Every other pony there is crystallized, except for Shining Armor and Cadence apparently, but why not him? Unless that is because he is a noob guard. Not at a high enough level yet. Cadence did say that he was a new recruit in EqG.

 

As for the pegasi crystal guard, doesn't surprise me at all, so, no further comment really.
