Is it just me or are songs not special any more

Pinkie Pride obviously had so many songs because it was an episode with Pinkie Pie and another party pony. How could that episode not have songs?

I see what you mean, they are putting a little too many in there, but I think they're doing fine so far. Not every single episode has a song. And the songs aren't getting really weird or stupid, either.

I dunno maybe Ingram is in a slump. I don't think they have been quite on the same level as season 1 or 2 and he's often done a lot of tricky things like weird chords or key changes. It doesn't help that many fan music creators cant even wait for a good acapella before rushing out a poorly created remix. When its a new song every episode and they aren't great ones then it is a bit of a drag. Waddyado?

And I was really sad when I realized that there's only 4 more in this season.

For real?  :o  The season isn't even half over yet.

I wonder, do the songs somehow seem boring to some mainly because they're being squeezed into the first half of the season?

Unfortunately, yes :C There're 16 songs in season 4 and we already had 12.

I had similar idea, maybe it's not as special as it used to be, because of the amount of episodes with songs.

With Reprise of Generosity it's 12. But I'm not sure if it counts. My friend told me that yes, but maybe not :)

I do very much miss how they handled songs in season 1 and 2. You would get a large chunk of episodes with no songs, and then a good 3 minute one, and they were awesome.

I remember hearing Winter-Wrap Up for the first time. It kind of blew me away because up to that point, we had a very small number of songs, and pretty much all of them were hardly a minute. Then comes along this awesome piece, at I think it was 3:30, and it was fantastic!

But now you get a song once every 2 or 3 episodes, and they hardly hit above 2 minutes each. Not only that, but they just overall seem less good on the whole, probably because there are so many of them now. It's just disappointing.

In a way? Kind of.

Most mainstream music that's insanely popular at the moment tends to be just there or just filler for the most part.

But there are some songs that remain special or have a lot of effort put into them like the generosity song of Rarity!

Not sure where all these cynical views are coming from.

The songs have been good. (Bats!, Hearts, Generosity, Goof Off)

Pinkie Pride had a lot but it was a musical so it was the blasted point. (No reason to complain)

The quality hasn't gone down, and even the lack luster songs have a point to the story where it lacks in enjoyability.

It's definitely not fanservice, else Luna would've gotten a song already.

Other songs though from other series have been referenced which is nice.

Daniel Ingram's been doing a good job this season and overall there's not that many.

Posibility and Potential are my two favorite words.

It's not, but I understand the confusion.  :)

pros of songs:

  • music that you can listen to outside of the show
  • emotional connection to the character
  • ability for creative visuals (like stuff not making sense. Take in "Apples Forever" how AJ and AB pop up in the foreground to sing or how the umbrellas become an apple core)
  • may allow characters to communicate to one another through song, but not directly
  • it's a performance of singing talent, musical talent, lyrics and animation
  • breaks up the "usual" show stuff happening

cons of songs:

  • doesn't allow for direct conversation between characters
  • cuts into plot-development unless it somehow serves towards the plot
  • less "realism"
  • takes a good chunk of time to put on a song away from the show--usually songs are built around a simple concept that could be established in less time without the music

I have nothing against the songs and in fact really like them, but I do not like being showered with song after song. I like it more if they feel "special," if there are less of them throughout the season so that they feel fresh.

The biggest gripe I have with the songs aside from them becoming "common" is that they soak up time. We only get 20 minutes of show, but the average song takes away around three minutes. Of course, there are tiny songs throughout the show, imo it's better for those to be more common than the 2-3 min. ones we've been getting a lot of.

I'm not complaining all that much really... I just think they should tone it down an eensy bit and they'll be golden.

I don't think they need to tone it down, but that's just my opinion. You clearly understand the pros and cons of songs though, Live-Action Gummy.

DINGDING!....time for the local Rant-hater to weigh in!

Being a child of the 90s and born in the early 80s i am a to this day, huge Disney fan. Many tattoos and thumbs up photos with myself and the voice actor cast of the Lion King 2 (movie premiere, check facebook, legit), I can tell you that Songs where NEVER important (imo).

In the world of fantasy music is a very genuine thing, almost like hearing a random ringtone from someones phone when they get a text. You lift your head and ponder its meaning, but you just ignore it and return to what your doing, or you comment to the user of said phone "nice song bro/girl".

How does this play into the world of MLP? Simple, you have a fantasy rich environment with heavy dosage of "everypony is special, because of said cutie mark". This individuality is just like us with our phones and random song clips. The residents of Equestria will either ignore a break out song, or join in (ie comment on for us).

Now we are watching this world playout before us. We as a now adult, young adult, and middle aged adult fanbase (this is looping back to my love of disney, bare with me) are trained to think in animation that a song break is something "special". In truth its just an element that makes us zone back in on say Rarity or Twilight from there antics and get the message of what the episode/event/movie are about.

It is not the SHOW that makes the songs special it is US. I am a huge fan of the Cutie Mark Crusaders Songs, love em. I have a dozen downloads of the same song remixed with dubstep, rap, rock, and even country twangs. I made those songs special, not the show. I honestly believe they where never ment to "be" special just for the sake of having that tag. I believe they write these songs to move the plot, to reinforce elements we need for story telling AND for us the fanbase....honestly did you really expect Weird Al of all people to guest star and voice act on a animated show AND NOT SING?!?! Come on!!! -Sweetbelle

DINGDING...weighing out.

Songs in season 1: 16

Songs in season 2: 15

Songs in season 3: 12 *cough13episodescough*

Songs in season 4: 16 (As confirmed on Twitter by Meghan McCarthy).

I don't know about y'all, but this seems pretty darn consistent with what we've been given in the past. For a 26 episode season, 16 songs is not too many and it certainly isn't "every episode" that we get a song or two. The first half of this season has given us a lot of music to enjoy and I for one appreciate it. I think this season has blessed us with some really stellar numbers like Hearts Strong as Horses, Apples to the Core, Bats, Pinkie's Lament, and Generosity. Honestly, how many of season 1's songs are really that memorable? The majority of them were Pinkie Pie singing pointless 30-second jingles. Hardly what I would consider "special," although they were plenty fun and made Pinkie Pie stand out as a character.

For those who don't like songs or wish there were less of them, bear in mind that 11 of the 16 songs have already aired and that episodes 14, 21, 25, and 26 are the only ones remaining that contain songs. I don't see how this is overkill. :)

Season 1

About 7 songs over a minute long

The rest all under 1 minute, most around 30 seconds

Season 2

about 8 songs over a minute long,

the rest about a minute or under

Season 3

about 9 songs over a minute long,

the rest about a minute or under

Season 4

10 songs so far that are well over a minute,

maybe 2-3 that are a minute-ish or under

Quite a number in the 2-3 minute range

And according to your post, we have 6 more songs to go, which'll probably be around 2 minutes each.

Yeah there's definitely an increase in the amount of song we're getting.

I love the songs! Buuuut I just feel they should tone it down an eensy bit. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

There are a couple of songs throughout the show I feel we would be better without though, especially that Raise this Barn song. They could have done without it.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion then. :)

Personally, I prefer having songs that are about 2-3 minutes long with or without a reprise as opposed to the many short songs that were under a minute in the first two seasons. Meghan McCarthy did say something to the effect that S4 would be the most musical season yet. I don't see how this is a bad thing so long as the songs are unique, enjoyable, and fit into the plot without feeling forced, and I think season 4 gets a check mark on all of that. After episode 14, we won't hear another song until episode 21. I'd say that's definitely toning down on the quantity of songs at least, if perhaps not the overall duration of music compared to prior seasons.

One thing I can say is that we haven't gotten any particularly long songs this season. Generosity is the longest so far, as it's over 3 minutes if you combine it with the reprise. Compared to prior seasons? Winter Wrap Up, Art of the Dress, At the Gala, Find A Pet, The Flim Flam Brothers, Smile Song, and A True True Friend are all well over 3 minutes long. So while season 4 might have more songs over two minutes long, it also doesn't have as many that are over 3 minutes long. ;)

And I'm gonna try really hard to forget what you said about Raise This Barn as that's one of my favorites. ;P

I have enjoyed most if not all the songs thus far....they add to the show. I like songs int he shows. Which is why Pinkie Pride is probably (one of) my fave episodes of S4. They were all so damn catchy too. I say bring them on.

I have seen a lot of back and forth on this thread about wither the songs are good or bad or special or needed or not. I never intended to say that the songs were in any way bad but just that they were ham fisted to us in the first half of the season. unlike S1 where they were spread out and each one hit us fairly freshly.

after seeing that the amount of songs were rather consistent through the seasons i think i have found why I started this thread. Its not so much that I don't like the songs (actually love Apples to the core and Discords song (I know all the critics can kill me later)) its just that almost all the songs were pact so close together that they stopped being a fresh shift and more of an expected thing for every episode.
