Did Trenderhoof really love AJ?

This is something that has me honestly confused.  I'm not sure if Trend really had feelings for AJ or was just into to her for "trendy" reasons.  The episode does such a poor job making that clear.  Let the pairing debate begin!

I'm pretty sure it wasn't so much love as it was lust. Of course that's not going to be looked into in a show like this. It really wasn't anything more then Rarity's infatuation with Trender, who was somepony she didn't actually know other than what she has seen in media and stuff.

I don't think he was faking it or acting the way he did out of a desire to be trendy, but considering he was completely enamored of her from the moment he saw her and was entirely oblivious and indifferent to how she felt about his advances, I can't call it love. Like Mane-iac said above, it really wasn't anything different than Rarity's fantasies about Blueblood and Trenderhoof himself. Not based on personality or any kind of bond, but upon an ideal of who Applejack was. I imagine her rugged good looks played a part too

If you recall, Trend said that he had seen a lot in his travels but never beheld such beauty. Trend's love at first sight crush and passion for Applejack was foolish and all-consuming. It wasn't based on intimacy but pure passion only and had no real foundation. I think he was partly fascinated by her country lifestyle which was something he had heard of, but perhaps never seen in action. Trend's feelings for her were definitely real, but typically infatuation crushes like his are not maintained for very long.

 

Which is fine and dandy because she's too good for him anyway.

Not sure it was truly him wanting to change for her, or him making a shallow attempt to relate to her. Since he was so infatuated with her image. He barely knew anything about her, all he knew about her is what he saw her doing on a farm.

 

I think it was more trying to relate to her farmgirl image, than actually becoming an entirely different pony in order to attempt to spend his life on the farm with her. Since he didn't seem too broken up at the end when he was back to his normal self, and everyone else was the same.

Oh, and to answer the question, I have no idea. Maybe, maybe not. Trenderhoof literally had an episode of development and AJ has no feelings for him back. I do think he finds her attractive though. He likes Apples!!!

there's really no telling how someone might touch you or how you might touch them on a emotional level.

Well from what we saw in the episode, Trenderhoof's feelings for AJ were based on the first moment he saw her and it didn't really build up a foundation for the relationship to actually start and grow. His feelings were real, but the relationship was not.

One thing that strikes me about Trend is that he's into...trends!    He makes a living traveling from place to place and making flowery reports on his findings.  He can put an appealing spin on just about any place or pony and make them seem like the next big thing.  And when he's done, he packs his bags and moves on to the next thing.  I have a hard time believing that after all his travels he would suddenly decide he wanted to settle down on a farm and stick to it for the long term. 

 

To the original question, I'm not so sure he was in love with AJ as much as he was with the different pace and lifestyle of farm living.  Trend has probably spent most of his career in fast paced glitzy urban settings.  Seeing authenticity of Sweet Apple Acres and its most famous resident was a breath of fresh air to him.  He still should have had a better grasp on what he was thinking and doing though.  I still can't believe he invited himself to move in before he even asked their permission.

With that being said? No, it wasn't true love, but at the same time it wasn't... fake? I guess that's the best word I can think of. He wasn't imagining his feelings or feeling them "just because". I believe he was infatuated with her and that's all.
