Where are you from and what is controversial there?

During my time on the internet it has come to my attention that it seems there is more controversy in the US than here in Britain, especially in regards to sexuality, race and scientific theories. I don't mean to judge anywhere I've never been so I thought I'd put together a little survey and I thought it would be interesting to find out where people are from and what is usually perceived as being controversial or even taboo in their area. It would also be intriguing to see what individuals find personally to be taboo

I'll start us off:

I'm from Leeds, West Yorkshire (a county in the north of England but not anywhere near Scotland) and because of a fairly multicultural population, many of which are students, there is very little which is controversial and even less which is taboo there. Being gay doesn't raise any eyebrows and religious people are in the minority (a creationist is almost impossible to find). It is all very liberal and aside from the occasional skin-head there aren't many cases of racism, homophobia etc.

Because of this lack of taboo, I'm intrigued by what is controversial in other places so how about you guys?

Northern California. Tech companies giving their employees bus rides to work, as well as the military, Fukushima Daichi, and basically anything else that exists... Then again, that's probably because I live like 3 miles out from protest central (Otherwise known as Berkeley)

Oh alright, I'll add to the chain. I'm from a big city in South California, but thinking it over we don't have any problems here.

I see it's California's turn to be awake and on the forum. I should have rethought my timing of creating this thread as California appears to be one of the more liberal of states.  It's nearly 4AM here and I need to be up in just five hours. It's probably time for bed

I wouldn't say exactly liberal, just the mindset of Californians is entirely different...

I live in a town not to far from STL MO (USA), which produces and uses the most meth in the country, which in itself spikes quite a bit controversy.  Like how the community is trying to fix the problem and what not.  Things are usually quiet, unless a event like black Friday that occurs to stir up gangs. There is an extreme lack of entertainment here, hints the drug abuse/gangs.

Excuse my lack of knowledge on (I assume) America but... St. Louis? Am I right?

Yep

I live in Indiana, the state that has so much potential but it is apparently dead set on making itself worse. What is controversial here? Gay marriage (they can't just legalize it and be done with it, gotta keep the bigots happy), guns, and coal mines. Yeah, AMERICA!!! Land of the meh, home of the free(as long as it is within the standards of a certain group).

Anyone who doesn't support gay marriage is a bigot, huh? Then what does that make the people who do, saints?

No, definitely not, but if people really are pathetic enough to want to actively deny the marriage rights to a certain group of people, then those people are not too high on my positive list. At the very least, people who do support gay marriage are supporting something good. You know, equality? Something that Indiana doesn't care about apparently.

Not going to continue this discussion here though. Not the place to do so. I wanted to make a response to this quote at least but it will be off topic severely if this goes on.

I'm from a mid-sized farming community in the Willamette Valley, in Oregon (west coast for those who don't know their American geography). Most of our issues are kept hush-hush because our town is controlled by people whose families have lived there for generations. The brewer is buddies with the high school's administration; surprise surprise, his daughter wins Queen of Hearts. We had a kid make it big in football; surprise surprise, his dad becomes the school's coach.

I suppose we are extremely racist and slightly homophobic. I recall a time when we had a foreign exchange student from Yemen at our school. FANTASTIC guy; he was on the cross-country team. He and I were bros. In the locker room I heard a group of kids talking about how Mr. Yemen was on their PE team for some group activity. One of the kids: "Oh, great, we have a terrorist on our team!" Everyone agreed with him.

Our mayor is transgender -- first openly transgendered mayor in the United States, might I add. Chill dude, but he obviously has to deal with prejudices and ignorance.

Well I'm from Colorado so one big controversy here has definently been the legalization of Marajuana, another one I can think of is gun control.  Coloradans (me included) sure do love their guns and believe me there aren't many restrictions to the types you can own here (they still do background checks though). Along with the right paperwork you can own pretty much anything here.  Coupled with the fact Colorado has been the location of two major shootings (Columbine and Aurora) and you get one big boiling pot of controversy which led to the recall of two Colorado senators.

I live in Victoria, Australia, so the worst things that ever happen round these parts is the internet crashing or some first-world problem like that. No taboos or anything that I am aware of.

Ohio, and our problems run on and on and on, city tax money recycled on garbage causes, new police cars in most counties every 2 years, to many people using, and abusing drugs, half of our law enforcement stands behind it, and people pay their way out of everything. Shady officals, and to much state and city dropped into atheltics. Pot holes 3 feet deep.

I live in Texas. Not much is controversial besides politics and the laws against gay marriage.

I think all of the United States share the same controversial topics, as would any multiple regions of other countries. In terms of a nation-wide scale, I would say abortion and death sentences.

I live in Oklahoma, in which everything is controversial. The majority, including the lawmakers, are either too steeped into religion or pandering to the overtly religious (and their supposed "sincerely held religious beliefs").

So, you guessed it, stupid things are controversial. Like LGBT rights. Even paying educators anywhere near enough is too controversial.

Sometimes I think that the only freedoms the majority of my state care about are the ones to own and carry a gun in public. That's fine, but freedom doesn't stop there. Yet that's all they complain about.

I live in a mid size town in ever lovely New Jersey. Actually, we're pretty cool her. I can't really think of anything controversial, except that a whole lot of people don't like our state's governor.

:P

Lol I live in South Dakota I could tell you a million controversial stories. Like the time PETA the animal group sent a letter to the principal of our high school demanding that we change our name from Spearfish high school to something like seakittens cause Spearfish hurts fishes fealings. His responce our town is called spearfish get them to change there name.

http://www.bhpioneer.com/news/article_ae4a2e63-639d-5933-a3db-7cf45605fb53.html

Or there was the time that we had a lock down, we later found out it was only the drug dog going through but the principal didnt want any students in the hallway cause the dog bit people. Well the teachers were told to lock the doors and have the students continue with there school work. But one teacher had the "bright" idea to have the boys line up on one side of the room and the girls on the other and handed all of them scissors, then instructed the 10 graders to stab the machine gun wielding maniac when he came in. she almost got fired,

But as far as recent controversies well the sturgis motorcycle rally, when a town of 5,000 becomes home to over half a million for one week. yeah stuffs gonna happen. My friend who delivers pizza had to file a police report cause he was 5 minutes late delivering pizza well the biker who ordered the pizza pulled a gun on him and said if this happens again i will kill you.

I'm from Texas. Contrary to popular belief, we do not execute babies (if you remember that Simpsons episode).

Abortion has been very controversial here. If you were following the news a while ago, there was a huge debate on that between the two parties. Other than that, there haven't been other issues that have been a problem recently. I happen to be in the most liberal place in Texas, so it's sort of weird (in both ways) if you venture out of Austin (confederate flags are seen once in a while if you're out there in some rural areas).

Not so much on LGBT. Same-sex marriage isn't legal, but it hasn't been a major issue that's been looked upon here.

Hmm..immigration..
