Jan animations shut down by hasbro/C&D

Just not the style they were drawn in.

Button's mom is, I believe, an original character. Button, although unnamed, actually appears in the episode "Hearts and Hooves Day". The animation also duplicates backgrounds and character design perfectly. Many series regular ponies also appeared in "Picture Perfect Pony" too.

As far as I know, not, he doesn't. It's derivative work.

But like Vox said, they own the characters of Button Mash (at least voice, name and personality) and Button's Mom (in all aspects, she never had appeared on the show), just not the style they were drawn in.  

 

While I do feel Hasbro is biting the hand that feeds, they are within their rights. 

 

It doesn't make a bit of difference if they make no money. Hasbro owns every single aspect of MLP:FIM.

 

By this logic, the entire creative aspect of the fandom is doomed. Which can kill of the fandom entirely..

Hasbro is actually being quite fair with what they allow. I think Button's Adventures was just getting a bit too "big", much like the game Fighting is Magic did.

Gotcha. It was a bit tricky to determine the exact direction of your ire, there.

 

But my point is that their claimed motives might have nothing to do with the real reason these people got hammered. But I suppose that this is a bit more than I can say without being opinionated.

It's the seemingly random level of response that annoys me the most. Some get C&Ds, some get simple written requests for changes, some get sideswiped through a 3rd party, some get ignored no matter what they do.

 

Mind you, I've worked in big companies like that before, and the legal teams for those companies tend to be a lot smaller than you would expect. They rely a lot on a collection of external legal consuls that work effectively independently to the company itself. I've been in several situations where a consul was acting on behalf of the company with that company being completely unaware of the actions in any way, shape, or form. And the actual legal employees being too few to provide proper oversight and just rubber-stamping whatever the consuls did.

 

So any randomness in target, or level of response, is likely due to Hasbro following this unfortunately common model.

Yeah, but the ponies in PPP were already set characters with personalities given by Hasbro, and made mere cameos or a somewhat major appearance without any actual lines instead of actual roles. Button Mash was an OC with an already trademarked design. I don't think HB gives a flying fuck about the character, just the design of him.

Actually Button would fall under Fair Use because its a parody maintained in the same art style. But as I stated before, I believe Hasbro is within their rights...

But the fact you even suggested it... The entire fan work there was CLEARLY based off of Hasbro's design and copies a lot of their characters blatantly (such as Sweetie Belle). To buy the series, they would be paying Jan Animations for a copyright violation. That just doesn't make sense.

Something is obviously going on here- Something fishy, Oh, Is by chance MLPforums going to be taken down too because of the design of the whole website or perhaps every single non official video showing any of the characters in the show is going to be taken down too if this is the case. And why would they have lost their rights? Jans wasn't infringing on them nor was contesting to take them away- he even said that MLP belonged to hasbro before he put the video up.

 

Hasbro owns all the original rights to MLP and its franchise.

 

I mean, Why do they have to take the good stuff? Cupcakes uses the exact same animation style and voices are alike to the show, yet that's not taken down either? Its fishy if you ask me
