CMC Already Friends?

Old Fluttershy

I found this kind-of interesting, in the first episode when Nightmare Moon appears and we see all the ponies hunkering out of fright. We see the CMC huddling together under a tarp. Now they could have all ran under there, but then they'd have to be in pretty close proximity to eachother, and if that happened then at such a big party you think they would have started talking? Yet they don't officially meet until episode 12 of the same season. I mean you'd think after seeing such a terrifying thing at that age you'd remember every detail. So did the CMC meet before they formed the CMC?

It always could've been a blooper and they could've been other fillies like earlier in Call of the Cutie the filly with the aqua mane and yellow body turned into Sweetie Belle yet apparently they weren't in the same class yet plus there were many bloopers for the CMC in season 1 they might've just been 2 other random fillies or foreshadowing, the world may never know. It also could've been Apple Bloom came with Apple Jack, Sweetie Belle came with Rarity, and Scootaloo came with her parents then they all got an instict to all hide under that one table and no questions asked no refrences made during Call of the Cutie either.

It proves that the CMC already knew each other but they weren't big friends or anything as they went to different schools at the time. Later, Scoots and Sweets were transferred because Sweets' family moved to a new house and I don't know about Scoots though. Apps probably just forgot about her acquaintances between the pilot and episode 12.

Another possibility is that the three scared fillies all decided to all hide at the same time and just happened to choose the same hiding spot.

They didn't know each others names at the time, since they had to introduce each other in "Call of the Cutie". I'm guessing they didn't know each other but they were so scared that they decided to huddle together as complete strangers.

We know destiny is a big part of the show since the Mane Six were united by their cutie marks and the Sonic Rainboom, so it probably was also destined that they hid together as well, sort of a foreshadowing, as others mentioned, that they would become friends.

Chekhov's Gunmare among other things.

But now I'm just going to take this as, there is so much fate and/or predeterminism elements in this series that I might need to consider grabbing tin foil hats lol.

They were destined by fate to meet and be friends later, just like everything else that seems to be micro-managed in the other ponies lives, free-will is a figment of your imagination.

This is what I go with myself. AB did not know either Scootaloo or Sweetie Belle, but may have known of at least Sweetie. We know that there is really little time in-between episodes so maybe this was just when Scoots moved to Ponyville.

Maybe the staff was planning to introduce them as already friends, but they eventually decided to make an episode about how they met each others.

Well, they most likely just hid together because they are all fillies and due to their age they were probably in the same general area, so in a time of crisis they just huddled together in fear. And of course , like everyone else said, foreshadowing.

That scene is actually an oversight by the storyboard artist. :> He was in a review with some bronies, and one of them asked this about if the CMC were already friends. Here's what he had to say.

I actually posed out that scene... so I guess it's my fault. I didn't know they hadn't met yet when I worked on it.

Story time. When I get a scene, it comes with the storyboard, audio and the character/bg files needed. On this particular scene, the storyboard clearly had the CMC drawn there, but the characters sent to me weren't them. I assumed I was just sent the wrong characters and matched the storyboard. I didn't realize until later that I was sent different characters because of the events of the 'Call of the Cutie' episode later in the season. Either way, the scene was approved and ended up playing out as fun foreshadowing for our adventurous trio.

To sum up, at first it was the CMC, then it was changed to not being them, then I changed it back.... /derp

  • 11 months later...

IIRC, Hasbro says that was a mistake & they did not meet until Call of the Cutie.  Since Apple Bloom has lived all her life on Sweet Apple Acres, this implies that either Scootaloo or Sweetie Belle (travelling w her parents, perhaps?), or both moved to town that Summer

I disagree with the "Sweetie Belle moved to Ponyville theory" as according to the MLP wiki Rarity was born in Ponyville. Which means that Sweetie Belle is from Ponyville. But the Schoolhouse scene in Call of the Cutie. Sweetie Belle may have been sick that day.

Well, we get to justify it by saying they were just three scared fillies who were more worried about Nightmare Moon than who they were huddling with. ;)

As others have pointed out, this was one of those classic early show mistakes that obviously was overlooked by the animators. Unless they decided to use it for foreshadowing purposes of some kind, like a tease. It's not the case but they might as well have used it as that. It was pretty funny noticing it though for the first time.

When the writers and animators aren't on the same page it can generate serendipity or hilarity. The line between them is thin. That's one advantage of the show not always being consistent. We get happy little accidents as Bob Ross would say. ;)

I guess I need to rewatch Call of the Cutie.  I only watched the S1 CMC episodes once.  I don't even remember that they supposedly didn't meet until then.  I thought I remembered that that episode is just when they formed their club.  The other day I walked into the living room, and my mom was watching Friendship is Magic Pt 1 and Pt 2.  She said it had been awhile since she'd seen them, and she didn't remember it all, so she just wanted to watch em again.  So I sat down and watched Pt 1.  I noticed the CMC, but didn't think anything of it.  I just thought they were always friends.  Yup, need to rewatch this stuff.

I think they didn't become friends until Call of the Cutie. I know they appear earlier via an animation error in the series premiere (foreshadowing or not, it's still confusing)

We know AB and Sweetie Belle are from Ponyville, but what about Scoot? Is she from Ponyville too?
