Should Magical Mystery Cure have been the series finale?

While marathoning the show for yet another time, one thing that I've always had in mind was how MMC was originally going to be the series finale. According to a review with some of the DHX staff, they said that it was going to be the end, as well as some other little details like how it was going to be a 2-parter and how the script was made in late 2011.

It makes sense, as MMC is an episode meant to be of success. Not to mention that it's the sixty-fifth episode, and TV shows with a total of sixty-five episodes is surprisingly common. Yet at the same time, MMC is a rather poorly executed episode, and would feel rather cheap if it was still the series finale. I may have loved Season 4 and am expecting a lot from Season 5, but that thought of the series finale and all has always left me a little sour inside.

So what do you guys think? Should we have sticked to MMC as the series finale, or is Season 4 and beyond fine just the way they are? I'd like your insight on this.

Well, it does look like the episode could easily play off as a series finale, due to how grand it feels. It is one of the better ways to go where you could end it satisfying if the show would've gotten cancelled, and still continue if the show does get renewed.

It's a great episode in my eyes, but in the eyes of many it was less than stellar. In any case, I must be one of the few who never saw it as a series finale since Twilight's character aside nothing felt accomplished. As such it would've made be sad had that been the end of FiM.

...if it had been the finale, it would have been a reasonably good place to leave it. Twilight being able to decipher and complete Starswirl's spell brought to fruition her magical studies, and her study of friendship ending, thematically, with "friendship is magic". Additionally it offered the right mix of closure, and open-endedness to allow for it to be an ending, but not rule out continuation (either officially, or by the fandom).

It might have made for a nice series finale, but I am glad they kept the show going considering the quality of Season 4, the Equestria Girl films, and we might not be getting a pony movie had it ended that soon. Frankly it was also a bold choice for the show to continue on as it did as not many cartoons get the chance to explore the aftermath of such a major event. Further episodes also affords the staff a chance to flesh out other characters as well too.

Right now I see MMC as the mid point for the show, and not the end point. It might have been the end for Twilight's journey as a student, but it was the start of new one for her.

No. I really love Magical Mystery Cure as a season finale, despite all it's flaws. But a series finale?

It's my least favorite kind of finale, the one where something major changes right at the end and we don't get to see it. I hate that kind of thing, despise it, utterly. It just leaves a sense of frustration whenever I see this kind of thing, would have ruined the whole episode for me if it was.

I really liked Magical Mystery Cure as a season finale, but would have felt dissatisfied if it had been the end of the series. Twilight may be a princess now but that doesn't mean her or any of her friends' adventures are over.

1st totally right you two.

2nd Either there would only be 3 seasons, so NO!

Or. the tree thing would have been hard to pull off and therefore that whole thread and Tyrek would have been wonky and season 5 seems to be largely based off of being the princess of friendship.  So get rid of Pinkie Pride, All the Equestria games shows, and Twilight's Kindgdom, and I'm left with power ponies, and Daring Don't, which coincidentally are in my bottom tier of the shows.  Two of which I don't feel like re-watching at all.

If you hated the shows with the key thread and Twilight Time, then you can push the Twilight becomes a princess off for the finale.  As for me.  I like where MMC took us too much to make it a finale.

On the other hand it might get rid of breezies, but, as they're a product, I doubt it.

No, if it was the series finale then it would be a rather poor one, you don't get to see any characters, no story, just a bunch of songs (a number of which poorly done), no, a series finale must involve the characters and a plot.

you don't get to see any characters

Let's see we got to see Twilight, Spike, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, Applejack, Pinkie Pie and Celestia play roles in that episode.

We saw plenty of characters in that episode.

no story

Twilight has to fix the mess she made while rewriting Starswirl's spell. Sounds like a story to me.

just a bunch of songs (a number of which poorly done)

The songs were used to tell the tell the compressed story because the episode was a musical.

a series finale must involve the characters and a plot.

Which by all accounts it did so it meets the bare criteria for what a finale constitutes.

If anything Magical Mystery Cure is a finale to Twilight's unicorn arc. Not the entire series and I really like to see how the Twilicorn arc turns out.

Maybe the series finale would involve eternal harmony being spread all throughout Equestria free from villains or evil. And that way Equestria becomes a popular vacation spot.

ABSOLUTELY NOT.

In fact, the very thought that it could have been the series finale is upsetting to me, and this is coming from someone who actually likes the episode.

Magical Mystery Cure being the series finale would have confirmed that throughout the series, no one's development or goals mattered except for Twilight's. No Wonderbolts for Rainbow Dash, no worldwide recognition for Rarity, no cutie marks for the CMC. NOTHING. Absolutely no one was wrapped up except for Twilight.

Does that honestly seem like a good place to end the show?

No, sorry, fuck that.

I'm biased because I disliked that episode, so I think it would have been a terrible idea.

After this episode, the story would have been far from finished: will Twilight make a good princess? What is her duty?...

And what about Discord, the mane 6's dreams or the CMC? Or the fact we would still want more episodes... :P

:adorkable: The season finale's as of late make me wonder about the end of the series as a whole, and how they would play that out. After seeing the battle scene with Tirek and Twilight last season, it makes me absolutely ponder how they are going to top that in account of epicness. I guess that's the mystery, but I will be saddened when the series does end. I think I heard it has a few seasons left possibly?

I like MMC as a season finale, because throughout the entire episode it was like watching High School Musical, with ponies and plot. Haha
We're all in this together, guys. Frankly, I think it did have potential to be a series finale, but I highly feel it fits in as season finale, because let's face it, when it was over we would all love to know what will become of Twilight and her friends after the coronation. When I found out Twi was going to be a princess a few days prior (because Hasbro couldn't keep their mouths shut...), I was excited! But I did suspect it to be the last episode ever of FiM, but as far as I knew, their adventure were not over.

No. There's still so many loose ties and it would have been way too short of an ending for my liking. It was good as a season finale because we knew that we would get to venture into Twilcorn adventures and learn more about her journey next season. However, just imagine if it was a series finale- it'd be too many questions and a lot of confused, pissed fans.

It would have worked fine as an ending point.  Not a perfect ending point as there were some more things that could have been addressed, but the major concept of the show would have been wrapped up more or less.

The series finale may be that pony movie in 2017.

It worked just fine as a season finale too transition wise.

Would have confirmed that throughout the series, no one's development or goals mattered except for Twilight's

Not necessarily so.

Well, if it was planned to be, it would be a good finale overall, despite how rushed it was. Why, because i felt our favorite ponies deserved it, afterall, they just got through hell for it. And because of instead of some big douche messing around and get the boot, each character faced a relatively mundane issue, but felt bigger because they were at the road of being failures at life, and that felt WAY more relatable and personal to me. Heck, I literally cried after the episode ended :sniff:
