Poll: How do you feel about mixing FIM with EQG?
UnknownFry replied to SolyWack's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
I would give it a chance, but for viewer accessibility reasons it is most likely not going to happen as the main show is designed so people can watch without it having to watching or read these secondary works in order to understand it. If it ever does happen than the show is going to need to do a whole lot of exposition in the process, but I am open for anything.- 41 replies

S05:E08 - The Lost Treasure of Griffonstone
UnknownFry replied to Jeric's topic in Season 5 Discussion
It was a good episode for what it was. Decent humor such as Rainbow Dash imitating Twilight, Twilight not suppressing her envy, and the whole little baking power little short they had at the end there. Superb world building with the history of the Griffon Kingdom detailed as well as as glimpse as Griffon society in the first episode to mainly take place outside Equestria, The return of Gilda was a delight, and she had a chance to redeem herself in the process as well while tying back into the events of Griffon The Brush Off while explaining why Gilda behaved the way she did. The two different approaches Rainbow Dash and Pinkie were equally amusing as I loved how the Griffons were driven by greed for money. Maybe Twilight should visit Griffonstone one of these days to update her notes, as she had some good ideas based on outdated information. I also wonder if the Idol of Beras may be one of those magical artifacts that was mentioned in the Cutie Map. 9/10 -
Does anyone think Twilight Sparkle is a Mary Sue?
UnknownFry replied to EmilyLeah94's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Nope. I believe that term is grossly misused and has lost all meaning at this point, and guess what Twilight still has plenty of things to work on as a character nor does everything go her way all the time, and she has to earn whatever rewards comes her way. I will remind everyone again that after the massive threat that was Tirek, she was beaten by simple, ordinary unicorn! Starlight is no ordinary unicorn , but yes Twilight was beaten to the punch in the cave. Second time around though her barrier spell pretty much neutralized Starlight's magic. As for The Smooze that creature was magic resistant so Twilight's and Celestia's magic would not cut through it anyways. Guess what magic is not an all powerful force that solve everything in an instance, and the show had reinforced this concept many times over the years.- 148 replies

S05:E07 - Make New Friends But Keep Discord
UnknownFry replied to Jeric's topic in Season 5 Discussion
it seems that the series is not (yeat) keeping in mind what happened in the comics, at least the cMC and discord are still on unfreindly terms Well the staff already mentioned the show is most likely not going to reference the comics for accessibility reasons as people would have no idea about the relationship between Discord and The CMC's assuming they had not read the comics in the first place. The comics are still canon in that the events did happen within the MLPFIM univerese, but the comics are not going to influence production of the show, but the show will influence production of the comics. -

They all have different talents, and the show isn't real life. True, but the show is modeled to teach lessons applicable for real life as far as the concept of friendships is concerned. So the idea of individuals having varying levels and different backgrounds is very much a relevant concept that pertains to the core of the show. As such pony life just like real life is not going to be flat out equal for everyone, and not everyone is going to have the same shots or opportunities as others may get. Life might not be fair in either instance, but there still are opportunities for the characters to prove themselves and earn rewards accordingly to their merits. You have not seen Season 5 yet, but The Cutie Map tackles a similar theme pertaining to some possible issues that concerns the ideals of this concept This doesn't change Twilight being a ridiculously overpowered/over-glorified sue. Not for you, but it helps put things back into perspective of the proper context concerning such things as far as some arguments go. As I said earlier I don't expect to change your mind at this point. Didn't I go over this? You might have, but the point is these differences don't make the other characters less important nor does it make Twilight any more important than what she actually she is as far as the show is concerned.
-
That's unfair. Four of them can't even do magic. None of them lived in Canterlot either. Life is not always fair, and not all ponies are created equal as far as talent and potential is concerned. What is important though is to make the most the most of the hand that circumstance has dealt to the individual. Admittedly Twilight's background has afforded her opportunities that might not have been available to her had things been slightly different. On the other hand the other five have talents and skills that surpass Twilight in other areas and the other five use what they have to pursue their own interests and desires, and they seem pretty happy about their lots in life even if they are still working towards some major goals in the process. It is true, though, that Twilight has gotten the most rewards by far, and not necessarily in proportion to her work. Let's not pretend whatever rewards Twilight has earned has not come without additional responsibilities and pressures as well. The title and castle seem nice perks but they both came with a price that Twilight had to pay to earn them in the process, and she will still be paying the price for quite some time. This is shown especially true since apparently no one knows the Mane 6 (despite their depiction - twice! - in stained-glass windows), but once Twilight's a princess everyone stampedes her. Hardly anybody recognized Twilight as a Princess in Season 4 aside from a few episodes so it is not like she was stampeded by everyone in Season 4. Admittedly so far in Season 5 she does seem to have greater recognition though. However the other mane 5 do seem to be recognized as being the best or having strong reputations in their respective fields in other episodes as well. Recognition does not seem like too much of an issue all things considered, and I would say rewards and recognition have been awarded accordingly appropriately to the proper merits of their respective characters. One last point of concession is that those stained glass windows are kind of tucked away inside the castle at Canterlot so it is not surprisingly that the majority of ponies would be unaware of the windows in the first place. It's the way her character is written/portrayed and how the world treats her that annoys me Fair enough, and I don't expect I will change your mind concerning the matter at this point, you have your reasons and I have mine. That's partly what I mean about the whole "given more opportunity and support than any other character on the show. Perhaps, but is it one of those earlier core concepts established in the early days of the show that I find particularly relevant to these discussions. All of the main characters come from different backgrounds and all have had different opportunities to prove themselves. It is not surprising that the outcomes had been different for each of the respective characters in question here.

The others work harder than Twilight. Debatable, but the others were never Celestia's hoove picked personal proteges either so they simply did not do work equivalent to what Twilight did and as such they should not be rewarded on the same level as Twilight because they did not do the equivalent work. Fact of the matter is they also have seats in Twilight's Castle, and they have depicted on stained glassed mirrors as well so they have been adequately rewarded for their labors, and they have been recognized in ceremonies in the past. The others have also been rewarded appropriately within their own fields and have achieved recognition in the show on their own terms by doing the appropriate work for their related fields, so I don't see the reason why people keep trying to bring the concept of Twilight keeps getting rewarded and the other's don't. This is simply not the case. I can't really say anything about season five, I haven't watched it yet. Fair enough. She's way more important/special than she needs to be. She may be the main character, but the she is not the only character of importance. Fact of the matter is that the show keeps reinforcing this concept to the point of directly saying similar messages within the context of these major episodes. Fact of the matter the show has actually emphasized the other characters a lot more in the later seasons within the vast majority of the episodes in comparison to whatever they do with Twilight.

I know, and that's stupid imo. She may be the principal main character, but there are five other main ones as well. Twilight fits that. Except she isn't perfect, and Rainbow Rocks kind of hammers that point down big time. Looking at the few episodes in Season 5 she seems to be far from perfect especially in Castle Sweet Castle. I've never had an issue with her being the main character. The issue I have is with her being the only important character. Or that the mane five are simply the means by which Twilight continuously gets showered with gifts and rewards that they'll never receive even a fraction of because they aren't "destined to win" like she is. Except the show keeps reinforcing the point that she can't do it without her friends. Why should the others be rewarded on the same level as Twilight when they have not put in the same amount of effort or have done the same amount of work to begin with? Let them earn their rewards on their own merits rather than just give them as such because Twilight got it. It may not be an equal treatment, but it is a fair one as why should they rewarded from things they never earned.

Her ratings are just fine as her subjects are content with the long successful and prosperous rule she has had. Her very presence inspires confidence and promotes stability which is something the three tribes never had before they asked Celestia and Luna to be their princesses. Honestly there is no one around who is better suited to run Equestria at this point and time, and by large the country has been at peace more often than it has been, and the show has shown her handling diplomatic relations and attending to matters at court on occasion. The fact is Celestia is a risk taker and a bit of a gambler, but she takes calculated ones based on what she knows. So I would hardly say she is unfit or is not competent to rule because she may have made some questionable decisions and some mistakes in the past. Twilight simply flat out lacks experience and the last time she raised the sun and moon was a flat out disaster. Too much of a green horn and the show pretty much requires her availability as she is the main character. If Celestia goes, than Luna is pretty much a goner as well, and if not Luna certainly is a bit rough around the edges Cadence is kind of busy running the Crystal Empire so she is out of the picture, but she too lacks the experience. Point is, you can't blindly trust Discord, or give him the benefit of the doubt. It may be risky to trust him at face value at times, however one is going to have trust him and give him the benefit of the doubt if one wants to truly be friends with him. Fluttershy and Celestia both understand this concept even if Discord's concept of friendship is still underdeveloped at this time.

I don't think Twilight works even half as hard as her friends, let alone AJ. When it comes to studying and hitting the books there is no comparison in who does puts forth the most effort concerning self improvement, and she had done quite a fair bit of the heavy lifting in some of those two part specials. mary sue. That term has been abused and misused so many times it has lost any meaning it used to have. Just another meaningless buzz word. Running a simple checklist though Twilight still is quite flawed, still has to work for whatever rewards she earns, and things tend to go against her way quite often. I would hardly call her a Mary Sue. If she has been privileged she has certainly made the most out of her opportunities. However you or anyone else are free to disagree.

spoiler What's up with season 5 and Cutie Marks?
UnknownFry replied to ponytheorist's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Because it is the main theme for Season 5, and so far it has been more of a positive than a negative as the show has tackled some mature themes using the idea of Cutie Marks to frame things, and more importantly questions about the nature of Cutie Marks are finally being addressed in the process. Seems like a win- win. Even with the idea of destiny being thrown around Cutie Marks are still empowering because the element of agency is never taken away the ponies if and when they do get them. And the show has shown that marketing ploys and good, creative entertainment don't necessarily have to be at odds with each other so yes, toys and plushies will come out of this and were definitely considered in the process behind the show. But that doesn't mean the theme itself won't or doesn't have any merit. Agreed.- 33 replies

What are the positive qualities of Rainbow Dash?
UnknownFry replied to Princess Twilight's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
As someone mentioned she is loyal, competitive, and passionate. It is true she can be a hot head and reckless at times, but in other instances these qualities shine through as she can be quite observational and apply her talents to the better end. Sure she has her flaws and has made her fair share of her mistakes, but in this regard she is not alone as the other Mane 5 are in the same boat, but I can say for certainty that she is a good pony at heart. -

Some people like her and some people don't but Twilight is a fine character who has come along way as far as a character development is concerned and she is still the same old Twilight before her ascension. She may be well rounded in many things, but she still has some major flaws that she could stand to work on as well especially after her ascension and her new found sense if purpose as the princess. Frankly I like her because of the fact that she works hard and is active in her efforts in to improve on herself, and that is commendable in of itself. She is also quite awkward still.

Twilight has received significantly more praise No she has not. Everyone has received praised accordingly to their merits fairly more or less, however if she has gotten more attention while doing so it is because she is the main character that helps keep thong running. Since now we're gradually teetering on the edge of Twilight being the only main/important character, while the other five are simply sidekicks. Not even close especially since Season 4 and 5 have placed more focus on other characters more so than Twilight. This is supported by how the mane five are rather unceremoniously left out of the Equestria Girls franchise while she is not, and how they and their Elements of Harmony are apparently not needed in the slightest to dispel evil. Wrong. The other elements were present when defeating Sunset Shimmer. Just not the artifacts themselves, but the concept of them is more than being as superficial as that. The point is their human counterparts also represented the elements as well. The other five would also have been redundant in these Equestria Girls films as well as there was nothing they could have offered that their human counterparts could not. Also, Twilight's Kingdom proved that they can be reduced to helpless damsels if it means that Twilight gets to shine over them. Wrong again. Twilight's Kingdom again reinforced they were the keys to victory as Twilight was unable to break past the stale mate against Tirek, and it makes sense they would be captured as none of them are strong enough to fight off Discord, and Tirek would have utterly crushed them without being boosted by Rainbow Power It was also her key episode so of course she was going to get a chance to shine, but at the end of the day things went back to normal.

Not really as some of these examples are not plot holes to begin with in the first place, and other times the information is provided in secondary materials with very little in the ways of contradicting the show. The elements of harmony are more than just the actual artifacts itself, and dragging Twilight's crown into the human world introduced the magic of the other elements into the word in the process as far as EqG is concerned. Not really plot hole given that things may operate differently in an alternate dimension as well. Celestia never said that in the first place as that was Twilight's interpretation concerning the matter altogether, and Celestia left the terms of the test rather vague aside from the you and you alone part. Celestia turned out to be right though as it was ultimately Twilight's decision that more or less saved the empire by sending Spike to deliver the Crystal Heart. That's simply Celestia being exceedingly incompetent as she has been since A Canterlot Wedding. Not really. Celestia has been pretty capable as ruler even since A Canterlot Wedding, and she was played The Crystal Empire situation pretty well even if her plans were more or less gambits. That is just the type or leader she is, and that is why she has been sucessful as a leader as she knows how to delegate. She may have some questionable calls in Twilight's Kingdom, but her options were rather limited given Discord'a betrayal, nor does making mistakes along the way make her any less of a leader as she was acting with limited information as far as Tirek is concerned.

Dangerous, yes. Sociopath, no, as there are some boundaries Discord won't cross and Fluttershy happens to be one of them. Emotional immature as far as the concept of friendship is concerned, that is a major yes. However there are limits to his power, and Discord avoid a conflict with Twilight by distracting the Smooze, so he is more than aware of the possibly power that can be used against him in order to stop him.
