Who created the Alicorns?

In my head canon I believe that before Megan left Ponyland, she created the Alicorns as the ultimate defense. I am also writing a fanfic that will have this idea in, so before you all say it can't be canon, I know!

Well, going by what the "Journal of the Two Sisters" says (IIRC, anyway), there was already a clan of alicorns that Celestia & Luna were a part of. Now, how big this clan was and what happened to it are legitimate questions.

There was at least one other alicorn mentioned in the show itself; the 'Princess' mentioned in the Love Poison story was illustrated as an alicorn. That may have been artistic license, of course, but still.

 

It was also mentioned in the story that the kingdom that the Princess ruled fell into Chaos. So we might be dealing with a kingdom of alicorns that... well... that Discord happened to, so no longer exists. The current Princesses being all the alicorns left.

 

EDIT: Either that, or that was actually a pre-Discord story about *Celestia*. Which would be interesting, mythologically.

I don't think anything created them, I think they just always existed. That, or they evolved from other forms of ponies.
